1 . Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat (热). However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up - your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern (模式). They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.

In many parts of the world, people take naps (小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates (气候), where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries                    where naps are traditional (传统的), people often suffer less from problem such as heart disease.

Many working people unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap - even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.

4 . All over the world the need for more laptops and computers increases each year. Networks have been part of our life. Probably everyone with a portable device(移动设备)has once logged on to a public WiFi network without paying for it while they are having a coffee, on a train, in a shopping mall or at a hotel. However, is this kind of public WiFi network safe?

Some networks are better protected than others because encryption(加密) methods are used. Therefore, they are safer than others. But a survey in 2015 showed that more than 950 million records were not protected, including addresses, emails, birth dates, phone numbers, passwords and so on. These open WiFi networks are really not safe, because it is very easy for hackers(黑客)to break into the operating system and get people's private information.

Most smartphones and laptops, by themselves, search and connect to WiFi networks. They usually prefer a network with a connection that has been used before. Hackers' devices are able to record these searches and look like the trusted WiFi networks. When these smartphones and laptops log on to the networks which are not real, hackers can easily steal their private information.

So next time, when we want to use our laptops or our smartphones in public places which offer free WiFi networks, please think twice or take safe measures before using them.

1. Why do people like to log on to a public WiFi network?

7 . Many of us mistakenly believe that it's wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)?

If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.

Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some of the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else.

You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior(自卑) because you don't have much money and you don't drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes you as a person.

The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.

1. According to the author ________plays an important role in making friends.
A.modestyB.confidence
C.admitting your shortcomingsD.self criticism
2. If you are not liked by a person, _________ .
A.you may not be the one to be blamed
B.you and that person misunderstand each other
C.you should find the reason in yourself
D.you’d better talk with the person face to face
3. We can learn from the third paragraph that ________ .
A.you’ll have few friends if your flaws a re bigger than your good qualities
B.your negative qualities cause a person to reject you
C.your weakness may also be your strengths in some way
D.your good qualities may turn out to be your flaws
4. Which of the following is true according to the author?
A.Inner qualities are more important than physical appearance.
B.It is easier for a wealthy person to make friends.
C.It is important to lose weight.
D.If you are not beautiful enough, try to improve your physical beauty.
5. What do you think the author is most likely to suggest if he continues to write?
A.How to lose weight.
B.How to make friends.
C.How to make self criticism.
D.How to find your good qualities.

9 . A team of engineers at Harvard University is trying to create the first robotic fly. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.

“The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of its components(部件) is off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” said Robert Wood, a Harvard engineering professor.

They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependences(相互依赖) on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood.

While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield.

Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead, he said. So there are a lot on technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.”

1. What is the typical characteristic of the robotic fly?
A.It’s automatic.B.It’s quite powerful.
C.It’s controllable.D.It’s very small.
2. We can infer from the passage that the robotic flyer can.
A.help do farm workB.act as a spy plane
C.fly at a very high speedD.answer many scientific questions
3. What is Wood’s idea about the robotic fly according to the last paragraph?
A.It has wide practical applications.
B.It is highly questionable.
C.It gives scientists interest in flying machines.
D.It points to a new direction in studying biology.
4. What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Harvard’s Study in the Field of Insects
B.Robotic Fly—a Copy of Real Life Insect
C.An Interesting Invention—Robotic Fly
D.A Breakthrough in Engineering Science

10 . Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf. as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports, Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements (代替物) for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

1. Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of?
A.Playing basketball in a gym.B.Motor racing in the desert.
C.Cycling around a lake.D.Swimming in a sports center.
2. What do we know about golf from the passage?
A.It is popular in Portugal and Spain.
B.It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.
C.It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.
D.It causes water shortages around the world
3. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because ________.
A.it uses fewer resourcesB.it improves our health
C.it is an outdoors sportD.it is recommended by experts
