3 . Once China’s strict lockdown was lifted, we saw a sharp rise in divorce enquiries. And this behaviour was mirrored around the world. In the US, the UK and throughout Europe, divorce rates have risen violently during the pandemic. Latvia, Lithuania and Belgium lead the way for the highest divorce rates in Europe. And in the USA, between 40-50% of marriages will end in divorce. The country with the lowest divorce rate in the world is India, followed by Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Turkey.

Why they have the lowest divorce rates, and what are they doing differently? In many cases, access to divorce is a driving force behind a country’s divorce rates. A country like Chile only legalized divorce in 2004, so the concept is still quite new and the local uptake is likely to be much slower.

Another key factor in determining divorce rates of a country is the value placed on family life. In countries like Colombia, it’s far more common for multiple generations from the same family to live together. This emphasis on family values places marriage at the heart of everything, so entering into a marriage is a more considered event.

Countries such as India with a strong religious following are more likely to have low divorce rates. This is because marriage is more sacred (神圣的) when viewed from a religious perspective. Couples will be more likely to seek settlements or simply stay together regardless when they hit bumps in the road.

There are a number of factors at play here, so it’s difficult to place a finger on one single factor that ensures couples enjoy a long and happy life together. And low divorce rates don’t always mean that couples are happy, it can just mean that the importance of marriage outweighs individual happiness. Seeking a divorce doesn’t have to be viewed as a failure; it can help you to get your life back on track and help you work towards a brighter and happier future.

1. Which of the following countries has the highest divorce rates?
A.ColombiaB.India
C.USAD.Mexico
2. Why does Chile has a low divorce rate?
A.Because people there enjoy a happier and longer life.
B.Because divorce hasn’t been legal until 2004 in Chile.
C.Because people there consider marriage the centre of everything.
D.Because people there think seeking a divorce is evil and blamable.
3. What will a strong religious couple probably do if they have trouble with their marriage?
A.Divorce without hesitationB.separate in a peaceful way
C.stay together regardless of conflictsD.beg for forgiveness of their god
4. What is the author’s attitude towards divorce?

4 . You’ve finally tucked yourself into bed and cracked open the detective novel you’ve been waiting all day to get back to. Three pages later, you’re fighting a losing battle against two suddenly very heavy eyelids (眼睑).

You were wide awake only minutes ago, and the protagonist (主角) just uncovered a promising new clue in the case. So, what gives?

As the BBC’s Science Focus explains, the comfort of your covers could be working against you. People usually try to read in a quiet, comfortable atmosphere, and those conditions happen to be ideal for sleep. Reading also eases your mind and draws its focus away from whatever might otherwise keep you awake.

“For many people, reading can be relaxing and enjoyable, which can put your mind and body in the appropriate mindset or mood to go to sleep,” said Dr. Raman Malhotra, a neurologist and member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s board of directors. “The main reason reading may help some fall asleep is that it allows your mind some time to rest and relax before turning off the lights to fall asleep.”

The concentration required to process every word can be pretty exhausting, too, especially if your chosen tome (大部头) is confusing. And reading line after line of anything can make you feel like giving your eyes a break.

These factors all make reading a great activity to add to your pre-sleep routine if you’re looking for ways to fall asleep faster. But if your body’s sleeping impulse is continually keeping you from enjoying a good book, there are some tricks to remove it.

Book Riot suggests reading in the morning, or trying an audiobook instead. Reading in a spot that isn’t your bed—preferably one where you’re sitting up, rather than lying down—can help, too. Reading in a public place like a coffee shop or park can also discourage sleep.

1. What may happen if you read a detective novel on your comfortable bed?
A.You may uncover a new clue in the case.
B.You may lose a battle with your competitor.
C.You may stay awake for a long time at night.
D.You may feel sleepy soon.
2. The most important reason why reading may help fall asleep is that ______.
A.it can be relaxing and make you exhausted
B.it gives your mind a break and relaxation before sleep
C.it allows your eyes a break before falling asleep.
D.it makes you concentrate on your chosen book
3. Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “tricks” in the last paragraph?
A.techniquesB.jokes
C.cheatsD.tools
4. The passage may be taken from ______.
A.a science fictionB.a detective novel
C.a journal of psychologyD.a business website

5 . The e-mail request came into Ekiben restaurant in Baltimore late on a Thursday afternoon in March: tempura broccoli topped with fresh herbs, diced onion, and fermented cucumber vinegar —with a twist. Brandon Jones, who sent the e-mail was writing on behalf of his mother-in-law, who adored the dish. He explained that she was now in the final stages of lung cancer (癌症) at her home in Vermont and that he was hoping to get the recipe to make it for her there.

Steve Chu, one of the Asian fusion restaurant’s co-owners, read the e-mail and quickly replied with an alternative suggestion. “Thanks for reaching out,” he wrote.

“We’d like to meet you in Vermont and make it fresh for you.” Brandon was stunned.

That Friday after work, a day after receiving Brandon’s e-mail, Chu loaded his truck with a hot plate and a cooler filled with ingredients and then headed for Vermont with his business partner, Ephrem Abebe, and an employee. They stayed overnight in an Airbnb rental and drove the next day to the condo where Rina’s mother lived.

As soon as Chu and his team pulled into the parking lot, they got to work. They pulled down the gate of the pickup, hooked the hot plate to the truck’s power port, and started cooking and deep-frying. In addition to tempura broccoli, they made tofu with peanut sauce and fresh herbs and some steamed rice. After neatly boxing everything up, they knocked on their customer’s door.

“As soon as she opened the door, she recognized the sweet,” Brandon says. “It smelled amazing.” Brandon’s wife Rina Jones says her mother also recognized Chu and his coworkers. She was so happy and touched to have that broccoli. She couldn’t believe it.

As for Chu, he couldn’t help remembering his loyal customer. “She loves the food and made sure to tell us. She’s an amazing, sweet lady.”

Chu didn’t accept any money from the family. “It was an honor to help fulfill the family’s wishes,” Chu says. “There was a lot of good, positive energy in doing this.”

6 . Vacations are one of life’s best pleasures, but with the coronavirus raging and the Delta variant on the rise, you may have some trouble with your vacation. Have all the fun with ways less hassle by trying one of these staycation ideas.

Visit a nearby national park

Our national parks are underrated treasures. With over 400 of them, there’s bound to be something for everyone. There’s plenty of hiking, but most national parks have other things to do as well, including museums, reenactments of historical events, guided star tours, wildlife spotting, and swimming. Many parks are wheelchair accessible.

Go backyard glamping

Glamping is like camping but better — you’re outdoors but with all the comforts and amenities (便利设施) of a hotel. You can pay to go on a glamping destination vacation or just set up your own in your backyard. Pitch a tent, fill it with pillows, cozy blankets, comfortable chairs, bean bags. Get takeout at your favorite restaurant and enjoy it together. Bonus: Unlike camping, there are clean bathrooms nearby.

Host a neighborhood dance party

Dancing with others is fun and good for you. But going into crowded dance clubs probably isn’t at the top of your to-do list right now. Thankfully, all you need for your own dance party is an outdoor speaker and a flat spot for dancing. String up some lights, fill a couple of coolers with drinks, and invite all your neighbors.

Hit the beach

This is one of the most popular staycation ideas and for good reasons. A day at the beach is like its own form of meditation. If there’s a body of water nearby, chances are there’s some type of beach. Bring a beach picnic, set up a sun umbrella, lay out your towels, and spread out the sand toys. Oh, and don’t forget the sunscreen.

1. Which staycation is most suitable for the disabled?
A.A nearby national park.B.A backyard glamping.
C.A neighborhood dance party.D.A beach.
2. What do you need to hold a neighborhood dance party?
A.A tent and some lights.B.A sun umbrella and cool drinks.
C.an outdoor speaker and a flat spot.D.A dancing pool and some towels.
3. What do the four staycations have in common?
A.They all get you close to nature.
B.None of them is far from home.
C.They are all fit for families with children.
D.They are cheap and environmentally friendly.

7 . It’s currently December and Christmas is almost here. And what better way to spend time with your loved ones than sitting down to watch some classic Christmas movies? Listed below are four films that will make you laugh, cry or both this Yuletide (圣诞节期间).

The Grinch (2000)

This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey’s best performances. It was also originally a children’s book written by Dr Seuss, which I would recommend reading! It’s the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas, but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. It sounds cheesy and cliché (陈词滥调), but I promise it’s a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.

Love Actually (2003)

While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely Jove this film. It has a star-studded cast, featuring actors and actresses such as Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are lots of different sub-plots, so I recommend watching a dubbed version (配音版) in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.

Home Alone (1990)

This blockbuster (轰动一时的电影) is one of my favourite films of all time and I would watch it all year round if I could. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forget to take him on vacation with them. While the family are away, burglars (小偷) try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year old boy outsmart two grown men.

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

You can’t have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this film. It’s not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It’s about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The storyline may seem a little childish, but you can enjoy it at any age. I cry every time I watch it and I’m 21!

1. In which film can you see Jim Carrey’s wonderful performance?
A.The Grinch.B.Love Actually.
C.Home Alone.D.Miracle on 34th Street.
2. What can we know about Love Actually?
A.It’s one of the authors favorite films.
B.We’d better watch a clubbed version.
C.It’s a film about the power of love and generosity.
D.Some handkerchief papers are necessary when you watch it.
3. What do the film Home Alone and The Grinch have in common?
A.They are very touching.
B.They are only fit for children.
C.They are funny and make people laugh a lot.

8 . The flag, the most common symbol of a nation in the modern world, is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country.

The national flag as we know it today is in no primitive (原始的) artifact. itis, rather, the product of thousands of years’ development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.

Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable. Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.

Using simple piece of cloth tied to the top of post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems (图腾) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves.

These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked: The king of China around 1000 B. C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag

9 . More children in China are putting on weight. In 2018, 16 percent of Chinese children were overweight, according to the National Health Commission (NHC).

Being too fat is bad for children’s health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), overweight children are more likely to develop diseases like diabetes (糖尿病) at a younger age. This can lead to a higher chance of earlier death.

On Oct 23rd, the NHC, together with five other national departments, worked out a plan. The plan aims to reduce the growth of fatness among children aged 0—18 years by 70 percent from 2020 to 2030, Xinhua reported.

Kids are putting on weight because of changes in their diet and lifestyle, according to experts. Too much schoolwork and greater use of electronic devices (电子产品) could also be a cause.
