6 . When kids enjoy an activity, they want to do more of it. Practicing a skill improves their abilities and helps them feel confident, especially when the effort is noticed and praised. Toddlers and preschoolers should play actively several times a day. Children from 6 to 17 years of age should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily. This can include free play at home and P.E. at school.

Preschoolers need play and exercise that help them continue to develop important motor skills — kicking or throwing a ball, playing tag or riding a bike with training wheels. Although some sports leagues may be open to kids as young as 4, organized team sports are not recommended until they’re a little older. Preschoolers can’t understand complex rules and often lack the attention span and skills needed to play sports. Instead of playing on a team, they can work on fundamental skills.

With school-age kids spending more time in front of screens, the challenge for parents is to get them to find physical activity they enjoy. This can range from traditional sports like baseball and basketball to biking, hiking, and playing outside. As kids get older, differences in ability and personality become more apparent. That is why it’s important to find an activity that’s right for your children.

Teens have many choices when it comes to being active — from school sports to after-school interests. It’s a good idea to have an exercise plan. Do what you can to make it easy for your teens to exercise by providing transportation and the necessary equipment (including workout clothes). In some cases, the right clothes and shoes might help a shy teen feel comfortable biking or going to the gym.

In addition to a child’s age, it’s important to consider his or her fitness personality. Meanwhile, be active yourself and support your kids’ interests. If you start this early enough, they’ll come to regard the activity as a normal and fun part of your family’s everyday routine.

1. What does the underlined word “This” refer to?
A.Free play.B.Play time.C.Physical activity.D.Children’s confidence.
2. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 2?
A.What appropriate sports preschoolers should take.
B.How to develop kids’ motor skills before school.
C.Why organized team sports are dangerous to kids.
D.When preschoolers should start to do sports.
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Not all the kids are fit for the same sports.B.Teens are particular about sports activities.
C.School-age kids are more active than teens.D.Some parents ignore what their kids like.

7 . Readers’ Favorite Running Routes

Paul Ghent, Belgium

I love running in Ghent. It is completely flat, so encouraging for beginners and people aiming for personal bests. There is a rowing lake with a 5km track. This connects with a nature reserve on an 8km loop. If that isn’t enough, there is another nature reserve, full of birds and canals surrounded by a 10km loop. I will be running my first marathon in Ghent in March 2022. Anyone?

Jennifer Nice, France

In Nice Provence, I really enjoyed joining the local joggers running along what is one of the most beautiful streets in the world—the Promenade des Anglais. You have the fresh salty sea breezes filling your lungs, the sun shining on the waves of the sea, and the beautiful buildings standing along the running route. Feel free to grab some fresh shellfish and a glass of wine on the beach as a reward.

Lisa Offa, UK

The Offa’s Dyke path, which runs from Prestatyn to Chepstow, provides stunning scenery and is just perfect to focus on the run. The sections of the route I like the most include the slopes (坡地) of Moel Famau and the section from Llangollen to Bodfari, where there is an excellent pub (The Dinorben Arms) to refuel in comfort. Perfect.

Richard Protaras, Cyprus

My favorite route is in Protaras, Cyprus. There is a path that runs from Fig Tree bay to Polyxenia beach and you have wonderful views of the bays and beaches while running. The amazing clear seas and sandy beaches make it very pleasant. The best time to go is early morning when the sun isn’t blazing and the paths aren’t too busy with holidaymakers.

1. Which route best suits people who enjoy nature reserves?
A.Nice, France.B.Offa, UK.
C.Ghent, Belgium.D.Protaras, Cyprus.
2. What do the routes shared by Jennifer and Richard have in common?
A.They have beautiful streets.B.They have lovely sea views.
C.They are famous for seafood.D.They are fit for morning runners.
3. Where can the text be found?
A.In a science paper.B.In a history novel.

8 . Whether you prefer solo dancing or being involved in a more formalized program, dancing offers the obvious plus to your physical health. You're not only moving your body in a rhythmic way and expressing feelings but also burning calories in your body and getting a workout for sure.

In a recent study, researchers compared the effects of walking, stretching and dancing on the wiring and gray matter of the aging brain. The result showed dancing had the significantly positive effect.

In the experiment, after volunteers in their 60s and 70s with healthy brains didn't show signs of cognitive (认知的) disorder, researchers placed them in three groups at will. One group walked, another group stretched and did balance training and the last group learned country dancing. The arrangements of the dancing became progressively more challenging over time. They all did the assigned activity for one hour a day, three times a week. After a period of six months, the volunteers' brains were re-scanned and compared to their brains when they had begun their voluntary work.

Agnieszka Burzynska, the study's lead author who is currently a neuroscientist and director of the BRAiN Lab at Colorado State University, found only one group showed a memory improvement — the country dancers. The participants who learned country dancing now had richer white matter in the part of the brain that processed memory. White matter usually breaks down as a person ages, which may lead to cognitive decline. Dancing, therefore, protected the brain from aging-caused neurodegeneration. So, dancing is not just an aerobic activity good for your physical health. It helps your brain, too!

Country dancing, ballroom dancing, tango and waltz are all done with others. When you take part in these dances, you're involved in a beneficial social activity as well. You are also cognitively motivating your brain as you learn the steps of the dances. Dancing therefore might be one of the best physical activities you can choose for brain health.

1. What's the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To add background material.B.To introduce the topic of the text.
C.To raise questions about exercise.D.To present experimental conditions.
2. What can we learn about the volunteers in the experiment?
A.They were grouped at random.B.They were under cognitive decline.
C.They were all asked to learn dancing.D.They were all born in the 1960s and 1970s.
3. What did the researchers mainly intend to prove through the experiment?
A.The brain function of volunteers.B.The cognitive disorder of volunteers.
C.The relationship between age and dancing.D.The effect of dancing on the volunteers' brains.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.How Dancing Affects People's Lifestyle
B.Why Dancing Is the Best Social Activity
C.How Dancing Helps People's Brain Health
D.Why Country Dancing Is Beneficial to People's Health

9 . The Chinese women’s soccer team rekindled their famous fighting spirit to end a 16-year wait to lift the Asian Cup. Having trailed 2-0 in the final in Navi Mumbai, India, on the night of February 6, 2022, the team summoned all of their determination and resolve to battle back and tie the game before Xiao Yuyi fired home a dramatic 93rd-minute goal from Wang Shanshan’s assist to secure the title.

China’s Tokyo 2020 participation ended with a shocking 8-2 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands, showing just how far Chinese women’s soccer had fallen behind the game’s elite nations. Now the work is to continue to revive past glories, as well as improve the standard of the domestic leagues and youth training to give the country a better chance of producing more great players.
