1 . Hiking and fast-paced walking are great ways to lose weight and improve cardiovascular(心血管的)fitness. Get out in the sunshine and pick up the pace.

Walking Musts

Start from 10 minutes and gradually increase your time. Make your daily goal 30 minutes of fast-paced walking. Cross-trainers, walking shoes or other supportive shoes will do. Consider wearing cushioned socks to help protect your feet.

Step It Up

Picture yourself walking fast because you don’t want to be late for the bus. This will be a faster pace than average walking. If you can’t maintain a conversation with your friend without getting out of breath, then you’re walking too fast.

Pioneering Adventure

Hikes are usually longer than 30 minutes; bring water and trail mix for continued energy. Don’t drink water from a stream or river unless you have a purification system. Hiking requires watching each step you take. Don’t plan on race-walking, but gradually pick up speed as you familiarize yourself with the trail.

The challenge of inclines and declines will cause your heart rate to increase. They also require special attention because of loose gravel or dirt. A hiking stick may help with stability(稳定性). Take your time. If the uphill gets difficult and you’re breathing hard, stop and enjoy the views.

Hiking alone is never a good idea. Take a friend, a trusted adult and your cell phone.

2 . "Barefoot Mike" gets a lot of attention when he shows up at the beginning of a race. He loves to run and has been running since he was a kid. He loves to race, and often competes in 10K races. But that’s not the reason he gets so much attention. People notice him because when he runs, “Barefoot Mike” runs barefoot.

Running barefoot has become a huge trend in the world of running. “I didn't set out to be a trend setter,” laughed

“Barefoot Mike”, otherwise known as Mike Whitaker. “I've always been a runner, but until a few years ago, I always wore shoes. Then one day I was running after a rainstorm. I stepped off into the grass to avoid a puddle(水坑) on the sidewalk, and accidentally stepped into a huge muddy puddle that had been hidden in the grass. I tried to keep running, but the wet and dirty shoe made it really hard. I figured the best solution was to just get rid of the shoes.”

Mike took off his shoes and dropped them into the nearest trash can. “Then I started running. At first I went really slowly because I was watching out for rocks or other things that could hurt my feet, but there really weren't any problems.” He started going faster. “It felt so good!” Mike said. “My knee, which always ached, didn't ache. My foot was able to spread out so I had better balance. And my feet didn't feel all hot and sweaty. It was awesome!”

“There are actually potential health benefits to running barefoot,” said Dr.   Nancy Bower, a podiatrist(足科医师).

A recent study agrees. A team of researchers recently videotaped several people running —first wearing shoes and then barefoot. In almost every case, when wearing shoes, the runners tended to land on the heel of their foot, which they call “heelstriking.” Many runners have impact injuries such as knee pain. Heelstriking may be the cause of these injuries or may make an existing injury worse.

When running barefoot, the runners tended to land on the middle part of the foot. The force is spread out throughout the foot. The ankle, shin(胫部), knee and hip don't get the shock of a hard landing with every step.

1. Why does Mike receive a lot of attention while running?
A.Because he runs very fast.
B.Because he loses his shoes.
C.Because he wears no shoes.
D.Because he wears strange clothes.
2. According to Paragraph 2, why did Mike run barefoot years ago?
A.He liked running barefoot.
B.He was advised to run barefoot.
C.His shoe became very uncomfortable.
D.His dream of becoming famous motivated him.
3. After running barefoot for a while a few years ago, Mike ________.
A.was very tired
B.was badly hurt
C.gave up running
D.felt unexpectedly great
4. According to the recent study, heelstriking ________.
A.is bad for one's health
B.is caused by existing injuries
C.happens when one runs barefoot
D.can be avoided by wearing sports shoes.

I am honored to have the chance to write for you. I have noticed that our school has very limited resources in term of students’ opportunities to do sports.

It is known to all what sports are very important to young people. If they have an access to good sports facilities, young people can adopt a healthy lifestyle and become more confident.

I suggest build a new playground, where should be designed for students with different interests. They should have a different section for each activity and available to students all year round. I believe so a sports area will meet our sporting needs.

Thanks for your reading.

6 . What would it take to persuade you to exercise? A desire to lose weight or improve your figure? To keep you away from diseases? To live to a healthy old age? You'd think any of those reasons would be enough to get Americans exercising. Yet a vast majority of Americans have thus far failed to swallow the "exercise pill".
Now a research by psychologists strongly suggests it's time to think of current well-being(幸福)and happiness as motivators for exercise instead of future health, weight loss and body image.
Dr. Segar, one of the researchers, believes that immediate rewards are more motivating than distant ones. "People who say they exercise for the quality of life exercise more over the course of a year than those who say they value exercise for its health benefits." He said. '
Other studies have shown that what keeps people moving depends on age, sex and life circumstances. For those of college age, physical attractiveness typically heads the list of reasons to begin exercising, although what keeps them going seems to be the stress relief that a regular exercise program provides. The elderly, on the other hand, may get started because of health concerns. But often what keeps them exercising are the friendships and sense of community that may otherwise be missing from their lives. Improving daily well-being is the most influential factor for the women. Men indicate they are motivated by more distant health benefits, but this may be because men feel less comfortable discussing their mental health needs.
"Exercise should be encouraged but the emphasis on weight loss, disease prevention and healthy aging should be reduced." Dr. Segar concluded. "Exercise can make people feel more energetic, less stressed and, yes, happier."
1. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Be free from diseases.
B.Take some diet pills.
C.Improve their figure.
D.Keep physically active.
2. According to the passage, which of the following persons may exercise more in a year?
A.Jane, who decides to lose weight.
B.David, who exercises for future health.
C.Mary, who enjoys exercising with her son..
D.Mark, who is suffering from a serious illness.
3. According to Paragraph 4, which group of people tends to exercise for friendship?
A.Men.B.Women.C.The elderly.D.College students.
4. What is the author mainly arguing in the passage?
A.Immediate rewards of exercise should be emphasized.
B.Distant benefits should be the motivators for exercise.
C.Feeling relaxed is more important than future health.
D.Men and women take exercise for different purposes.

What I Think of Boxing as a SportBoxing is a popular sport. Newspapers, magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches. It could be the toughest of all sports to survive. It takes boxers hours in the gym and years to develop the specific characteristics needed to be a great boxer.     1

It seems to me that some people, especially men, find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport. When they watch a boxing match, they can identify with the winning boxer. This gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves.     2    They do that because the boxer comes from their own country, and if “their” boxer loses, they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves. It is a fact that many people have feelings of aggression from time to time, but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives. Watching a boxing match gives them a way of expressing it.

3    Although boxers wear gloves during the fights, and amateur boxers even have to wear helmets, a kind of strong hard hat, there have frequently been accidents in both professional and amateur boxing, sometimes with dramatic consequences. Boxers have suffered from head injuries, and, occasionally, fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring.     4    They are usually in the form of serious brain damage, even if a boxer has never been knocked out.

To conclude, I am personally not at all in favor of aggressive sports like boxing.    5    We can celebrate more men and women from non-aggressive sports as our heroes in our society. I believe that the world is aggressive enough already! Of course, people like competitive sports, and so do I, but I think that hitting other people in an aggressive way is not something that should be regarded as a sport.

A.However, boxing can be a very dangerous sport.
B.Sometimes fans are rooting for a particular boxer.
C.In boxing, fighters are required to hit a moving target.
D.Many fans are drawn to the sport because they love the competition.
E.Perhaps that is the reason why successful boxers are treated as big heroes.
F.I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV.
G.Besides, studies have shown that there are often long-term effects of boxing.

9 . LONDON---The International Table Tennies Federation(ITTF) plans to work with Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft Corporation, to promote(促进) table tennis in the United States, ITTF President
Adham Sharara said.
The plan was put forward after Gates came to London to watch the game between US teen player Ariel Hsing and Chinese Li Xiaoxia on Sunday, Sharara told Xinhua in an interview.
Sharara didn’t disclose the details, but said that Gates offered to help after watching Hsing’s match, in which the 16-year-old girl nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Olympic table tennis history, pushing No. 2 seed Li to the limit before losing 4-2 in six tight sets.
“Gates was surprised to see the young American girl played so well. He asked me what he can do to help promote table tennis in the United States. I think we’ll work with him. If the United States becomes very strong in table tennis, it’s also good for China,” Sharara said.
Sharara said the case is a “good example” which shows that ITTF’s efforts in promoting the popularity. The ITTF has changed its rules for the London Games, allowing only two players from one nation to enter the singles events. Three players from each National Olympic Committee(NOC) were allowed to enter the singles in previous Games.
“The reason we do this is to help more NOCs to join in our game. If we give more chances to the top countries, someone like Hsing will not come to the Olympic Games. They have no chance. But if we give them the chance, we can see what they can do,” Sharara said.
Sharara said the change increased the pressure on strong teams, like China, Japan, South Korea and Germany. “But they understand now because they saw other NOCs attending. Some countries before had no chance to play in table tennis, but now they are joining in table tennis.”
Other changes made to the Olympic Games include the color of floor (from red to blue) and new table design. “As far as presentation is concerned, we try to change all the time, especially in the Olympic Games. We hope to give audiences something new, exciting and cool.”
Table tennis has long been the strengths of Asia, especially China. Since the sport was introduced into the Olympics in 1988, China has taken 20 of 24 gold medals available. Four years ago in Beijing, it claimed six medals in the men’s and women’s singles.
Talking about the development of table tennis, Sharara said, “China has the responsibility to promote the sport. Of course, China has done a lot.”

10 . Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royale?Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way. It is just because of Bond's wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide.
Yes, that's parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body. Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.
Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.
Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy(哲理) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, and jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life, to reach the destination successfully. A parkour lover said, "I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything."
Another philosophy we've learnt from parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone, at any time, anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself that you earn energy and confidence.
1. Which of the following is TRUE of parkour?
A.It is a team sport.
B.It is a good but boring sport.
