文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。运动是一种身体、心理和社交的冒险。这是孩子们休息一下,释放额外能量的好方法。这也有助于他们过上更充实、更幸福的生活。本文主要介绍了运动对身心的好处。

1 . Benefits of Sports

Doing sports is a physical, mental and social adventure. It’s a great way for children to take a break from studies and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have proven beneficial to overall well-being.

The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious. Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports, you’ll notice an increase in your overall fitness once you’re involved.     1     Basketball players focus on strength training; football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs. The training process helps promote physical fitness and performances in competitions.

2     Playing sports also contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. A pat on the back, a high five from a teammate, or a handshake after a match really boosts a child’s confidence. Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise self-worth.     3     So after a game, it’s a better idea to ask “Did you enjoy the game?” rather than “Did you win?”

Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership.     4     Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome. Teamwork breeds responsibility and challenges you to be responsible for your actions. Being part of a team gives you an opportunity to be a leader.

Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance studies and athletics.     5

There is no shortage of reasons to find a sport to get involved in. Are you ready to go? Pick one and get moving!

A.It’s not just your body that benefits from sports.
B.Therefore, playing sports is going to make you more fit.
C.But remember, a child’s self-worth should not be distinguished by victory or loss.
D.If you play group sports, you’ll be part of a team that takes direction from a coach.
E.Nearly every sport requires physical activities and the competitive skills.
F.Among these, learning how to function as part of a team is the most important advantage.
G.Only with strict discipline can you be successful both in the classroom and in the sports field.

4 . You Ask: Is Yoga Good Exercise? By almost any measure, the answer is yes, but don't let it be all you do. Research shows regular yoga practice lowers your risk for heart disease and tension. Yoga may also lessen symptoms of depression, headaches, diabetes, some forms of cancer and pain-related diseases.

Yoga also seems to prevent weight gain. One 4-year study from Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found middle-aged adults who practiced yoga at least once a week gained 3 fewer pounds than those who stuck with other forms of exercise. The same study found overweight adults who practice yoga lost 5 pounds, while a non-yoga group gained 13 pounds.

How can a little bending and stretching do all that? Unlike exercises like running or lifting weights, “yoga puts you in a parasympathetic(副交感神经系统的) state, so your heart rate goes down and blood pressure goes down,” says Dr. Tiffany Field, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Yoga is tied to a healthier heart, as well as its ability to reduce your stress, improve your mood, and help you sleep more soundly. When you consider the extra health benefits linked to each of those brain and body benefits-lower pain, lower body weight, lower disease risk-you could make an argument that few activities are as good for you as yoga.

One thing yoga doesn’t do, though, is burn loads of calories. Even hot forms of yoga like Bikram result in the spending of modest energy—roughly the number of calories you’d burn during a brisk walk. While more and more research suggests calories shouldn’t be your only focus when it comes to diet and exercise, there’s no question that running, swimming, lifting weights and other more vigorous forms of exercise are great for your brain and body.

"Yoga is unquestionably good for you," Field says, "but it should be done along with traditional forms of physical activity-not in place of them."

1. For those who practise it, what can yoga not do?
A.Consume a lot of caloriesB.Reduce stress
C.Lessen symptoms of depressionD.Help sleep better
2. What can we infer from paragraph 5?
A.People tend to pay too much attention to calories when exercising or on a diet.
B.People shouldn’t go on a diet if they do regular yoga practice.
C.Vigorous exercises are good for people’s brain and body.
D.Yoga is a better form of exercise than those vigorous ones.
3. What will Field probably advise people to do?
A.Practise yoga daily to stay healthy.
B.Give up other forms of exercise and practise yoga alone.
C.Do other forms of exercise in addition to practising yoga.
D.Consult an expert before practising yoga.
4. What is Field’s attitude towards yoga?

8 . Try This at Home!

Are you looking for a new pastime that will create a balance between physical activity and relaxation? Then yoga may be the perfect choice for you. Yoga can be practiced by people of all ages and levels of fitness.    1     It's a great way to strengthen your muscles and become more flexible.

In the 1930s, Indian Sri Tirumali and K. Pattabhi developed one of the most popular forms of yoga practised worldwide today. They worked together using an ancient Sansknt text called Yoga Korunta to create a set routine of yoga movements and breathing exercises.     2

Ashtanga is different from other forms of yoga. It is a very powerful form of aerobic (有氧的)exercise which creates deep heat in the body.     3     In other forms of yoga, however, the routine can change each time and the stretching exercises aren't aerobic.

4    As well as making you stronger and more flexible, it can also help you to stay calm. By focusing on your breathing while doing physical exercise, you are able to get a balance between mind and body. In addition, yoga helps to make us healthier so we are less likely to get common illnesses like colds.

Furthermore, yoga encourages you to think about what you're doing. Often you will close your eyes while doing certain movements.    5    After a few lessons you'll stop looking at what the others around you are doing. You will stop comparing yourself and start focusing on yourself.

A.It can also be done anywhere at any time.
B.The result of their co-operation was ashtanga yoga.
C.Whatever kind of yoga you choose, there are many long-term benefits.
D.This allows you to concentrate better and it makes you less competitive.
E.Every time someone practices ashtanga, he or she does exactly the same movements.
F.If you're interested in yoga, but can find a class near you, then it might be     an excuse to travel.
G.Recently, it has become extremely common for beginners as well as advanced yoga students to go on yoga holidays.

9 . Being highly successful in any field is pretty rare. It takes a combination of natural talent, luck, determination, and plenty of outside support for someone to make it big in sports, entertainment, or business. But what if competing is all that matters to you, whether you are likely to succeed or not? This was the goal of Michael Eddie the Eagle Edwards, and that he reached that goal was an amazing achievement.

Born in the U.K. in 1963, Michael was an enthusiastic downhill skier whose dream was to compete for Britain in world-class competitions. He would have liked to represent his country in the 1984 Winter Olympics, but there were a large number of downhill competitors, and Edwards didn't qualify. Seeing his chance elsewhere, he switched to ski jumping. Ski jumping didn't cost nearly as much, and there was almost no competition for a place on the Britain team.

But number of hurdles (障碍)could have meant the end of Edwards' dream. He weighed more than most competitors, which put him at a disadvantage. He had no financial support for his training. Poor eyesight meant that he had to wear glasses under his goggles (护目镜)- not a good thing when they steamed up at high altitudes. But he couldn't let any of this discourage him. He saw himself as a true lover of the sport who simply wanted the chance to compete. Winning wasn't the point. Having the opportunity to try was all he cared about. And nothing could stop him from trying.

In the end, Edwards took 55th place in the 1987 World Championships. He then went on to the Calgary Olympics in 1988, where he finished last in both of his events. Many athletes would have been embarrassed by this result, but he is proud of his achievement to this day. His determination to fight against all the odds made him a global hero, and in 2016, the inspiring film Eddie the Eagle was made about his life.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To add some background information.
B.To uncover the secret of success.

3. After the Calgary Olympics, Edwards _________.
A.felt he had reached his goal
B.was embarrassed by his results
C.switched to film making
