It was spring. The flowers were blooming, the sun was shining and the birds were singing their beautiful songs. There was a basketball championship going on in a basketball stadium, located in the beautiful city of San Francisco.
Jesse like his elder brother Timmy was one of the best in the competition; he scored most of his team’s points, but his team did not like that. Jesse never passed the ball. His coach always told him that it was a team game and not a one-man show.
“Jesse, pass the ball more,” insisted Coach Tyler. “Coach, I am good; I can win this whole tournament by myself if I want to,” responded Jesse. “Jesse, you need to learn to respect the game!” said Coach Tyler. “I don’t need to respect anything,” said Jesse. “Okay then, and I don’t need you in my team, Jesse. Get out of here!” said Coach Tyler. “Fine!” replied Jesse angrily.
At school Jesse’s friends Zack, Christopher, and Aaron were trying to calm down Jesse, who was still angry about what happened the previous day. Jesse was usually good in school, but after he was kicked out of the team, his attitude changed. He started doing poorly; he got in trouble and failed classes. Jesse tried to join other basketball teams, but he could not because their lists were filled or he was too young or too old. Finally, Jesse was recommended a team by Zack.
Five months later...
Jesse started passing the ball more, and he still averaged 26.4 points per game. Jesse enjoyed how he played, but he did not like that he was on the bench (替补). Jesse proved that he was a star on the court, but still the coach said that he was better on the bench. “Coach, I think I have showed that I can start next game,” said Jesse calmly. “No, Jesse, you are not good enough,” responded the coach. “But...” said Jesse before the coach interrupted him. “No, Jesse!” Jesse started getting mad. “Coach, you need to start me. I’m the best in this team,” said Jesse arrogantly.(傲慢地) “Jesse, how about you just leaving?” shouted the coach.

6 . Long before the term “snowboarding” existed — at least 80 years before it was an Olympic phenomenon — people were flying like surfers down snow-covered hills. The first known instance came in 1917, when 13-year-old Vern Wicklund stood on a sled (雪橇) that he rode down his parents’ backyard in Cloquet, Minnesota. Wicklund patented the idea nearly two decades later but produced only a handful of models.
The sport picked up speed in 1965, when Michigan’s Sherman Poppen created the Surfer by connecting two skis and adding a string at the front to control the direction. Poppen sold close to one million units by 1970. But the real breakthrough happened when Dimitrije Milovich, a Cornell University student, founded Winterstick, the first modern snowboard company, in 1972. With steel edges, solid fiberglass and, most crucially, two belts for one’s feet, Winterstick’s boards allowed riders to fly through more complex topography (地形) than previous riders could do.
Snowboarding went mainstream soon thereafter due to the competition between Jake Burton Carpenter and Tom Sims. Sims, a New Jersey-raised professional skateboarder who was more interested in aerial stunts (空中特技) than in how fast he could slide, founded SIMS Snowboarding in 1976. Carpenter, a race enthusiast from Long Island who was credited with coining “snowboarding”, created Burton Snowboards one year later.
In the 1980s, most North American ski resorts (滑雪场) banned snowboarding, citing insurance liability and the rudeness of too many riders. However, the sport was more accepted in Europe, particularly in France. By the 1990s, though, almost every resort in North America allowed riding. The appearance of the Pipe Dragon, a machine to cut half-pipes through snow, enabled new aerial stunts, and when snowboarding appeared at the 1998 Olympics, the half-pipe was the sport’s biggest draw.

8 . Anyone who’s lived through middle school knows those years can be particularly challenging. Some researches show youths across the U.S. are struggling with mental health. The physical health benefits of bike riding have been well-documented. Wilson, a researcher at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and his co-authors carried out a new study to see if taking part in a cycling program could result in measurable changes in mind for teenagers.
The study involved more than 1,200 students, ages 11 to 14. Students participated in a cycling class for at least three days a week, for a period of 6 weeks. They learned cycling safety and practicing skills outdoors while raising their heart rate and just having fun. The students completed standardized questionnaires before and after the program designed to measure their health.
“We know cycling can benefit the body. Our research shows how it benefits the mind and social relationships as well. Bike riding can be an ideal activity for adolescents because of the benefits it offers,” said Wilson.
“Cycling engages several parts of brain function. You are looking at your hearing, you’re balancing, you’re navigating and turning. Oftentimes, you’re doing it with someone else, so there’s the positive effect of company or group activity,” said Allan Reiss, a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
While exercise has powerful mental health benefits, it’s not universal. For example, previous research has shown that teenage girls are at higher risk of mental health problems like depression and anxiety than boys. The current study found that, while middle school girls reported increased well-being after participating in the cycling program, that increase “may just reach the kind of baseline level for male students,” Wilson said. And other aspects of healthy living are also important, noted Wilson. The study found that teenagers who didn’t limit screen time to a maximum of two hours a day, or who got less than the recommended 8.5 hours of sleep, saw less improvement in their well-being, he said.
