5 . Japan's government is facing criticism (批评)for pressing its plans to hold the Tokyo Olympics even as the country deals with COVID-19. More than 300,000 people have signed a petition (请愿书)calling for not holding the Games, which are set to open on July 23. An advertisement said people were in danger of being “killed by politics”.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has repeatedly stated that the government is continuing with plans, promising the games will happen safely. Some Japanese lawmakers have questioned those statements as some hospitals still struggle to find beds for those sick with COVID-19.
Last month, Suga declared a third state of emergency in Osaka, as well as in Tokyo and two other areas. That lasted through May 31, 2020. On Wednesday, two more areas were placed under emergency measures. It is estimated that only 1 percent of the public has so far been fully vaccinated although millions of vaccines (疫苗)sit unused in very low temperature storage.
Suga and his government have faced criticism for being too slow and soft on virus measures. Japan has been able to keep its number of virus cases and deaths below those in the U.S. and Europe without restrictive measures. But the results are worse than in some other parts of Asia. Japan has also fallen far behind in vaccinations. Though officials blame a lack of supplies from Europe, progress has been slowed because of staff shortages. About 7.6 million vaccines remain unused in freezers.
The president of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee, Seiko Hashimoto, said that Japanese athletes were likely to get vaccines before the games began. "In Japan, the vaccination of the citizens isn't going very well," she said, adding that the public saw giving the athletes vaccinations as a special treatment, so this gives rise to dissatisfaction among the citizens toward the games.

6 . On a hot July day in Fairfax, Virginia, the couple team Christopher Pei and Zhang Guifeng are training their students while observing their emotions before their USA Wushu Kungfu Federation National Team Trials (选拔赛).
“They are so nervous because they are experiencing competition anxiety," says Pei, co — founder of US Wushu Academy. "The anxiety allows me only an hour of sleep every night during the competition.”
Wushu is a sport that combines elements of performance and martial arts. The USAWKF National Team Trials happen every two years. Coaches and students get up at 7 am each day to practice for the trials. For 30 years Pei and Zhang have been working in Wushu education.
Pei, who is in his 60s, moved to the United States from China with his family in 1972. “When we moved to Vestal, New York, I did not know any English and started learning English from alphabets," Pei says. "So I figured it might be a better idea to start learning Wushu in case I got into a fight and could protect myself." He later realized Wushu is composed of two Chinese characters, "zhi" (it) and "ge" (戈) which means to stop fighting.
The couple opened (heir first academy in Virginia in 1988. Students start as kindergartners and many continue all the way to college.
Chinese culture emphasizes mastering both literacy and martial arts in order to become a complete person. Zhang believes Wushu helps youth develop concentration because its two main principles include focus and respect. "Many parents who grew up in the U.S. as second- or third-generation Chinese need their children to not only learn traditional Chinese culture but also the correct way to become a better person," Pei says.
They devote six days of the week to Wushu education. Sunday is the only day when their attention is not on their students. ''Learning Wushu is difficult, Pei says. "But the students don't easily give up.”

7 . As early as 1894, the newly formed International Olympic Committee (IOC) considered ice skating as a possibility for the first modern Olympic Games which would be held in 1896.
In 1911, a member of the IOC suggested that winter sports should be staged as part of the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. Some opposed the idea. At last, the IOC decided to hold Winter Olympic Games in 1916. However, World War I broke out in 1914. After 1920, the national governing bodies for winter sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics.
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned to hold a winter sports festival in 1924; at the same time Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the IOC, suggested that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. The IOC didn't go that far, but did agree that Chamonix could call its festival an “Olympic winter carnival”.
The festival drew 258 athletes from 16 countries to compete in bobsledding (雪橇比赛), figureskating, hockey, Nordic skiing and speed skating. Charles Jewtraw from the United States won the first gold medal in the 500metre speed skating, but the festival's hero was Claus Thunberg from Finland. He won five medals, three of which were gold in speed skating.
Weather has often been a major story at the Winter Olympics and so it was at Chamonix. The festival opened with rain and the unseasonably warm temperature turned snow and ice to mud. Then temperature dropped as far as 25 below zero and the mud became ice.
Despite the weather, more than 10, 000 people showed up. In 1926, the IOC recognized the Chamonix festival as the first Winter Olympics and decided that the Winter Games would be held every four years, just like the Summer Olympics.

8 . I have read with interest the opinion of one woman who attended a high school basketball game at Three Oaks and came away thinking the students were disrespectful. I have a very different point of view. Respect does not equal quiet, although a certain generation of people would disagree. Respect is a deep admiration for someone or something because of their abilities or achievements and a regard for the wishes and traditions of others.
In my opinion, the students at Three Oaks High School were the very picture of respect. They brought their team and school spirit to show their admiration for their basketball team. This is something that is desperately lacking in many schools — SPIRIT. I am so happy to say it is alive at Three Oaks. They cheered and made noise in a gymnasium, they jumped up and down when their team scored, they groaned when they made mistakes, but kept the team's spirits up by cheering, even when it was evident, they were going to lose. They kept the tradition of cheering and respect by showing due regard to a parent who came over and spoke to them about jumping too far onto the court. They listened and followed his instructions. He also happened to be the coach of another team whose fans were doing nothing.
These kids were doing what they were supposed to do, in a place they were supposed to do it. It was not a library, or a mall; it was a sports match. I would ask the lady who wrote the letter to the editor if she has been to any professional sporting events? I remember watching a Super Bowl I a few years ago and the quarterback could hardly make his calls heard to the guy standing right in front of him. You know what he said about it later, that it was amazing to have the fans cheering so loud.
I wish both these teams the best of luck. It was an amazing game. Even though we lost, we left with our spirits high, ready for the next time our teams me. It is going to be another great game of basketball.
