2 . For most people, the thought of having to watch themselves work out is not an attractive one. Yet as any gym-goer knows, there are always some people who like to enjoy their reflection in the floor-length mirrors. It is perhaps these particular keep-fit lovers who are most excited about the latest trend in home exercise-smart fitness mirrors.
These are 180cm or so tall, high-tech mirrors that have a computer which is connected to the Internet, and also work as a video screen. The idea is that people contact an online trainer, who then appears in the mirror along with their reflection.
On the more advanced devices the mirror is equipped with cameras, speakers and numerous sensors connected to AI, so the trainer can watch people’s movements, and provide improvements and changes. On the simpler mirrors the video and sound are just one-way — people can see and hear the trainer, but not the other way around. Lessons are typically not live; instead, people just get into a library of online workout videos.
But is there any actual advantage in being able to watch yourself work out? Colleen Logan, the US owner of both Nordic Track and ProForm, says, “Seeing themselves in the mirror allows the users to correct their form or position, so they get the best possible benefits of strength exercises and reduce mistakes that could lead to injuries”.
However, Dr Anthony Papathomas, a sports and fitness psychologist says there is value to this argument, but that he also has some concerns. He said, “How people who are not confident about their body image feel about the mirror gets me in a fret. It may be a problem for those new to exercise and looking to make a lifestyle change. Even for regular exercisers, there are many who experience body dysmorphia (变形) or eating disorders, and for them, seeing a reflection throughout their exercise might be troubling.”

3 . Have you tried to run or walk for exercise and then given up? If you answered yes, you should try a new kind of exercise: aquatic (水中的) exercise. Aquatic exercise is like exercise on land, but you do it in a swimming pool. More and more people are trying aquatic exercise now.
Aquatic exercise feels easier than exercising on land. Why? You weigh about 90% less in the pool. It is better for your knees than running or walking. Water is about 1,000 times thicker and heavier than air. To move through the water, your body has to work four times as hard. As a result, you can burn more calories (卡路里).
In fact, most people say they feel more relaxed in the water. They stop thinking about the things that make them worried. They feel in control of their bodies. The cool, quiet environment makes them feel good.
But what if you are afraid of the water? No problem! There is nothing to worry about. Aquatic exercise is safe and easy to learn. It doesn’t require any special skills. You don’t even need to know how to swim. Aquatic exercise is for everyone.

4 . A recent study conducted by Gavin Sandercock at the University of Essex in the UK and his colleagues shows just one in 20 people aged 18 to 64 in England are meeting England’s strictest weekly strength training guidelines. Strength training is defined as any activities that strengthens muscles or bone, says Sandercock. This can include lifting weights, body weight exercises and fitness plans.
The teams looked at survey data from over 275,000 adults in this age group. Between 2015 and 2017, these people were asked to estimate how much time they spend doing physical activity each week. They wanted to find out what proportion of these adults in England met the UK’s weekly health guidelines, which recommend 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.
The researchers found that on average just 5 percent of these adults in England met the full recommendation, including strength training. They also found that men were more likely to meet all the guidelines as well as younger age groups. “But the strongest effect that we found when we looked at the variables was education,” Sandercock says.
“There are two main reasons why this could be the case,” Sandercock says. “ People who are more educated may be more likely to know what the UK’s recommended health advice is. On the other hand, it could be that strength training——especially lifting weights——often requires access to a gym which costs money. Higher levels of education have been linked to greater wealth,” he says.
“To encourage greater participation in strength training, I believe we need to raise awareness about its multiple benefits. And we need to stress that strength training is relevant to health and fitness across all age groups and not just for young males. Anyway, there’s still a long way to go.” says Anne Tidedmann at the University of Sydney.
1. What does the study show about the adults in England?A.They lack strength training. | B.They attach importance to diet. |
C.They watch their weight. | D.They have strict fitness plans. |
A.They are aimed at male athletes. | B.They have a standard for exercise time. |
C.They include some mental activities. | D.They only apply to healthy people. |

C.It affects strength training greatly. | D.It contributes to one’s wisdom. |
A.It takes less time. | B.It needs great efforts. |
C.It makes mo difference. | D.It gets wide support. |
5 . Workout fads (狂热) come and go, but virtually no other exercise program is as lasting as yoga(瑜伽). It originated from India and it’s been around for more than 5,000 years.
People of all ages and fitness levels can do the most basic yoga poses and stretches. You can do yoga anywhere, indoors or out. You’ll need to use a yoga mat to keep you from sliding around in standing poses, and to cushion you while in seated and lying positions.
Even though there are many instructional books and DVDs on yoga, it is well worth it to invest in some classes with a good instructor who can show you how to do the postures. But if you don’t live near a studio, or you’re the on-the-go type who struggles to make time for a regular class, doing yoga at home can help you fit the practice into your life.

·Move well and eat well.
·
Yoga is a very reasonable form of exercise, but you have to choose the right type. A 2021 study found no difference in weight loss totals for participants practicing a gentle, restorative yoga versus a more vigorous type of yoga.
A.Make weight loss last. |
B.Learn about cognitive skills. |
C.Studies show that high levels of cortisol can lead to an increase in fat. |
D.Several studies have confirmed that doing yoga does raise cortisol levels. |
E.Yoga helps break old dietary habits and related unconscious patterns of behavior. |
F.Actually, the best yoga is the practice that fits for you — the one you’ll commit to. |
G.But as for weight loss, many people assume other types of exercise will benefit more. |
7 . In 1986, I watched my first soccer match on my parents’ big box television. I was six, and ever since then, I have dreamed of attending the World Cup.
This year, I traveled to Brazil to make my dream a reality. The first match I attended was between Australia and Spain. Within minutes of walking into the stadium, I found myself surrounded by the excited fans, talking and cheering together. Unlike what one normally sees on the news, this match was mainly peaceful except for one fight. When the fight started, the whole section began chanting(呼喊)with one voice, asking those fighting to stop. When they didn’t, the rabble-rousers were sent out by security guards minutes later.
What struck me about the games I attended was the sense of camaraderie. I met soccer fans from different countries. Sometimes we were cheering for the same team and sometimes for opposite teams, but that didn’t stop us from becoming friends. The stands were not divided between teams, and the interaction was often spirit-lifting.
I also watched the game in Sao Paulo that ousted(淘汰)Brazil from the World Cup. I was with friends at a large bar which hosted a mix of Brazilian and German supporters. As Germany scored one goal after another, the sadness and even tears were visible on the faces of Brazilians. But German fans came to the Brazilians to comfort them and apologize that the game was ending with such a big gap. Everyone was hoping for a good match.
What I love about the World Cup is that it provides a chance for people to learn about other countries and cultures. People learn about the countries of the teams they support and about their opponents’ history and culture. Soccer is a game that not only gives people the chance to learn about each other but also has the potential to unite people.
Sports can be a dividing force, but the true spirit of sports is about unity and fun. The matches at this World Cup have been exactly that so far, and I hope it remains so.

C.The warm friendship. | D.The players’ performance. |

10 . In one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, Saudi Arabia-ranked No. 51 in the world-took down two-time champion Argentina 2-1 on Tuesday.
The result was also a moment of long-awaited approval (认可)for Saudi manager Hervé Renard, a journeyman coach who has built a decorated career on soccer’s road less traveled. A 54-year-old Frenchman who wears tight white dress shirts, Renard has made it his feature to turn around national teams in Africa and Asia.
“Football is not for the dreamer, ” Renard said. “If you work very well and play very well, the results will arrive. ”
Renard was mostly happy to work hard as an unknown, far from the game’s most popular leagues, while he waited for those results to arrive. Renard landed in Saudi, shortly after the team was kicked out of the 2018 World Cup. The low point came in the opening match when it lost 5-0 to Russia.
By November, however, Renard had changed the Falcons, as the team is known, into a well-trained side that seized its limited opportunities, rode its luck, and bent without breaking for the last half-hour of the game.
After the game, Renard was the first to remind his group that once their 20-minute celebration was over, they still had everything to achieve at this tournament. “You think you are one of the best teams in the world?”he added. “Keep your feet on the ground. ”
