1 . Yeva Klingbeil’s high school track career was cut suddenly when she was diagnosed (诊断) with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer that affects muscle tissue. Klingbeil, 18, had to go through months of chemotherapy (化疗) and radiation treatments after her diagnosis, which left her too weak to compete.

The COVID-19 left Klingbeil away from her teammates as school went virtual and track meets were canceled. She faced another challenge recently when doctors discovered her cancer had returned, leading to more chemotherapy.

Despite the challenges, Klingbeil’s track coach, Rob Cloutier, reached out to her to see if she would like to join her teammates in a tradition in which seniors run the 4x100 race at the last home track meet of the season. “I told her to run the anchor leg, which is the final leg of the race,” said Cloutier. “I wanted her to be able to do it one last time.”

Hearing the news, Klingbeil was excited. Meanwhile, Klingbeil was just starting to walk again after using a wheelchair due to complications (并发症) from chemotherapy, but she was committed to running her high school track one last time with her teammates.

Klingbeil had a chemotherapy treatment on the day of the last track meet, May 24, and then put on her team uniform for the first time in over a year. When it was her turn, her three race teammates came to her side and walked the track with her. The entire Shen High School track team also walked along with Klingbeil from the field and then rushed and cheered for her when she crossed the finish line. “That was a great surprise,” Klingbeil said, “I feel accomplished because crossing the line was a perfect end of my high school track career.”

Cloutier said he had watched Klingbeil go through her cancer battle with that same level of determination, saying “She’s worked through this challenge in her life without a single complaint and with a smile on her face. Everyone who has witnessed her can learn a little bit from that.”

1. Why couldn’t Klingbeil continue her track career?

文章大意:本文是记叙文。作者通过讲述自己的家庭与足球之间的故事,展示了足球背后所蕴含的文化意义。

2 . My family first moved to Colorado 22 years ago. Los Angeles was too expensive and it was difficult to find well-paying jobs and affordable housing. Colorado became our next dream place. Settling into a small town in the Front Range, my parents found hard jobs.

Growing up in this small town, I remember my parents working hard to get past the language barrier. My mom, especially, tried her best to ensure she knew all that she needed to know about like my parent-teacher meetings and extracurricular (课外的) activities. One of those extracurricular activities that I signed up for was football. At that age, football was cool and all, but I was more into playing Pokémon and other video games. Football didn’t draw me in.

Big football tournaments (联赛) would come around like the World Cup, the Copa América and the Gold Cup, and the Mexican National Team would play in these tournaments. I would sit there in our living room and unmindfully watch the games while my parents would go crazy with enthusiasm ( 热情). I would sit there and play my game. My dad would look over and tell me that I should be paying attention carefully to the game and that I should care more about whether Mexico would win the match than my video games.

Both of my parents’ workspaces were crowded (占满的) with other workers. My mom worked with people from all over Latin America. Everyone’s topic of choice at work would always turn to how their national football team was doing. It was a way to show pride in the countries where they had grown up.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,运动与降低患心血管疾病、癌症和过早死亡的风险之间有着密切的关系。

3 . When you can’t fit your entire workout into a busy day, do you think there’s no point in doing anything at all? You should rethink that mindset. Just 11 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic activity per day could lower your risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease(心血管疾病) or premature death, a large new study has found.

Aerobic activities include walking, dancing, running, jogging, cycling and swimming. You can estimate the intensity level of an activity by your heart rate and how hard you’re breathing as you move. Higher levels of physical activity have been associated with lower rates of premature death and chronic disease, according to past research. But how the risk levels for these outcomes are affected by the amount of exercise someone gets has been more difficult to determine. To explore this impact, scientists largely from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom looked at data from 196 studies, amounting to more than 30 million adult participants who were followed for 10 years on average.

The study mainly focused on participants who had done the minimum recommended amount of 150 minutes of exercise per week, or 22 minutes per day. Compared with inactive participants, adults who had done 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic physical activity per week had a 31% lower risk of dying from any cause, a 29% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and a 15% lower risk of dying from cancer. The same amount of exercise was linked with a 27% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease and 12% lower risk when it came to cancer.

“This is a convincing systematic review of existing research,” said CNN Medical Analyst Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University, who wasn’t involved in the research. “We already knew that there was a strong correlation between increased physical activity and reduced risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer and premature death. This research confirms it, and furthermore states that a smaller amount than the 150 minutes of recommended exercise a week can help.”

1. Why did the scientists from the University of Cambridge do this research?
A.To confirm the past research.
B.To encourage people to do more exercise.
C.To find out how the amount of exercise impact the risk levels.
D.To explore the relationship between daily exercise and risk levels.
2. How did the scientists reach their conclusion?
A.By conducting genetic research.
B.By analyzing data from past research.
C.By comparing different groups of participants.
D.By collecting a mass of data from science website.
3. What can we learn from this study?
A.Inactive participants had higher risk of dying from cancer.
B.People should take exercise for about 22 minutes every day.
C.The scientists suggested people exercise at most 150 minutes per week.
D.Moderate-to-vigorous aerobic physical activity was the best exercise for adults.
4. What is the Dr. Leana Wen’s attitude towards this research?
A.Critical.B.Indifferent.
C.Sceptical.D.Positive.

5 . Do you want to live in a healthy lifestyle? Practicing yoga is one of the best choices. Yoga has a well-deserved fame for helping to improve balance and flexibility and for gaining calm and relaxation.     1    . Here’s more about how doing yoga is a complete body and mind workout.

Reducing Stress, Reducing Pounds

Several studies have confirmed that doing yoga does reduce cortisol (皮质醇) levels.    2    . It can also increase your desire for high-fat and high-sugar foods and drinks while reducing your muscle mass.

    3

In a 2016 study, participants involved in practicing yoga realized that they tended to notice not only the amount of food they ate, but what type of foods they ate and the impact of eating those foods as well. “Subjects are reported becoming aware of the effect of certain foods on their bodies during their yoga practice, including sugar, dairy, meat and alcohol,” wrote the authors of the study.

Making Weight Loss Last

4    . This can be attained through improvements in sadness tolerance, mindfulness and self-sympathy. For example, if someone experiences improvements in mindfulness, they may be less likely to ‘mindlessly’ eat in response to emotions such as boredom, stress, anger and other external stimulation like the presence of tasty foods.

Choosing the Right Type

Ultimately, the best yoga is the practice that fits you—the one you’ll commit to. There are now many accessible styles of yoga that meet you where you are no matter what your weight, age, physical challenge or background.     5    .

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了足球俱乐部最初的成立以及历史发展。

6 . Football clubs have existed since the 15th century, but unorganized and without official status. It is therefore hard to decide which the first football club was.

Early clubs were formed by former school students.    1    In the beginning, football was dominated by public school teams. Later, teams consisting of workers made up the majority.

Another change took place when some clubs became willing to pay the best players to join their team.     2    In the 1880s, the interest in the game moved ahead to a level that tickets were sold to the matches. And finally, in 1885 professional football was legalized. Three years later, the Football League was established.

3    Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup) became the first important competition in 1871. The following year a match between England and Scotland was played for the first time. That was followed by 4,000 people at Hamilton Crescent.

Football was for a long time a British phenomenon.    4    The first game outside Europe occurred in Argentina in 1867. But it was foreign British workers who were involved and not its domestic citizens.

Then the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded. England and the other British countries did not join FIFA from the start. They had invented the game and saw no reason to obey an association.    5

In 1908, football was included as an official sport in the Olympic Games. Until the first FIFA World Cup was played in 1930, the Olympic Games football tournament ranked as the greatest on a national level.

A.Other milestones were now to follow.
B.Still, they joined in the following year.
C.Thus, football was played all over the world.
D.But it gradually spread to other European countries.
E.Until now, FIFA still plays a major role in the world.

He set the record with a jump shot (得分) in the third quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers game Tuesday night against Oklahoma City. James pushed his career total to 38,388 points and passed the scoring record that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had held for nearly 39 years.

After he made the shot for his 36th point of the night, James threw both hands in the air, and then smiled. Abdul-Jabbar sat up from his seal and clapped. 8 . It’s far from easy for people to run just one marathon. They usually need months of training to get into shape to last the 42.195-km distance. However, marathons are no problem for Australian runner Erchana Murray-Bartlett.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了一款旨在让人多锻炼的高科技健身镜。

10 . For most people, the thought of having to watch themselves work out is not an attractive one. Yet as any gym-goer knows, there are always some people who like to enjoy their reflection in the floor-length mirrors. It is perhaps these particular keep-fit lovers who are most excited about the latest trend in home exercise-smart fitness mirrors.

These are 180cm or so tall, high-tech mirrors that have a computer which is connected to the Internet, and also work as a video screen. The idea is that people contact an online trainer, who then appears in the mirror along with their reflection.

On the more advanced devices the mirror is equipped with cameras, speakers and numerous sensors connected to AI, so the trainer can watch people’s movements, and provide improvements and changes. On the simpler mirrors the video and sound are just one-way — people can see and hear the trainer, but not the other way around. Lessons are typically not live; instead, people just get into a library of online workout videos.

But is there any actual advantage in being able to watch yourself work out? Colleen Logan, the US owner of both Nordic Track and ProForm, says, “Seeing themselves in the mirror allows the users to correct their form or position, so they get the best possible benefits of strength exercises and reduce mistakes that could lead to injuries”.

However, Dr Anthony Papathomas, a sports and fitness psychologist says there is value to this argument, but that he also has some concerns. He said, “How people who are not confident about their body image feel about the mirror gets me in a fret. It may be a problem for those new to exercise and looking to make a lifestyle change. Even for regular exercisers, there are many who experience body dysmorphia (变形) or eating disorders, and for them, seeing a reflection throughout their exercise might be troubling.”

1. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about smart fitness mirrors?
A.Their target users.
B.Their basic functions.
C.Their wide popularity.
D.Their complex structure.
2. What can be the benefit for exercisers from simpler fitness mirrors?
A.Having live workout lessons.
B.Exercising with other partners.
C.Learning from some trainers at once.
D.Taking advantage of workout videos.
3. What does Logan think of the mirror?
A.It makes mistakes sometimes.
B.It could bring injuries to its users.
C.It helps users exercise more properly.
D.It can’t be used for strength exercises.
4. Which of the following best explains “in a fret” underlined in the last paragraph?
A.Worried.
B.Confused.
C.Annoyed.
D.Interested.
