2 . Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.

Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.

In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.

3 . My First Marathon

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.

The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted! At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!” By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again. By mile 21, I was starving!As I got close to mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running. I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

Some doctors now think that the internal fat surrounding important organs like the heart liver could be as dangerous as the external fat which can be noticed more easily.

“Being thin doesn’t surely mean you are not fat”, said Dr Jimmy Bell at Imperial College.

Since 1994, Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat.

According to the result, people who keep their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits of internal fat, even if they are slim.

Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside. Of the women, as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25) actually had too high levels of internal fat. Among men, the percentage was nearly 60 percent.

According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are actually on the edge of being fat. They eat too many fatty and sugary foods, but they are not eating enough to be fat. Scientists believe we naturally store fat around the belly first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.

Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of internal fat, but some think it has something to do with heart disease and diabetes (糖尿病). They want to prove that internal fat damages the body's communication systems.

The good news is that internal fat can be easily burned off through exercise or even by improving your diet. “If you want to be healthy, there is no shortcut. Exercise has to be an important part of your lifestyle,” Bell said.

Researchers from Duke University wanted to see if using the smartphone with a low-cost weight-loss App might help young adults in the US who are overweight. Researchers tracked the young adults progress after six months,one year and two years. The personal coaching group lost more weight than the other two groups at the six-month mark, but that lead(领先)disappeared at the one-and two-year follow-up.As for the group using the smartphone App,their average weight loss was never more than the other two groups. Lead author Laura Svetkey says that she and her colleagues were both surprised and disappointed                    at the results.“Given the power of cell phone apps and the popularity of these health and fitness apps,we thought this might be good to provide an effective solution at a low cost,”says Svetkey.

8 . This weekend a marathon took place in Salzburg, the city where I’m living. I admired the runners who ran 42.2 kilometers if they finished the course. I’ve never run for more than half an hour, so I’m amazed that some people manage to keep going for over four!

At university I play korfball. This is a team sport with eight people on each team. The aim is to shoot the ball into the hoop(篮圈), which is like basketball hoop, only higher! All players get a chance to attack and defend during the game and it’s very fast-paced.

When I started korfball, I wasn’t very good at it. I could throw and catch but I wasn’t very fast on my feet. Shooting was also difficult for me. Moreover, you often have to shoot on the move in korfball, and I found it hard to balance and shoot straight while running backwards away from my defender!

However, I really enjoyed the sport and made friends in the club, so I attended training twice a week. Two years later I am in the first team for my university and have played in many matches. This just shows if you train hard, you can succeed.

Running is difficult because you have to make yourself willing to keep going. I used to get really out of breath while running and I didn’t feel good at all! Now I actually enjoy going for a run along the river in Salzburg, feeling my muscles(肌肉) working and breathing in the fresh air.

Challenging exercise is always rewarding. Hiking is fun because all the hard work—walking uphill—comes at the beginning of the day. Then at the top of the mountain you can enjoy the view and some well-earned chocolate! At the end of the day you feel like you’ve really achieved something.

I will never be a marathon runner, but I would like to try a 10-km run sometime, or perhaps even a half-marathon. Seeing how happy the runners were as they crossed the finishing line made me want to have that feeling—the months of training paying off as you achieve your goal.

10 . Although its history can be somewhat traced back to ancient Korea, it is a true fact that Taekwondo as an organized art is relatively modern. In fact, the only recorded history begins in the mid 1900’s.

The actual beginnings of Taekwondo are not known to everyone, yet many historians believe it came from a Korean martial art from practiced over 1,300 years ago.

In the early 1900’s the art developed with the instruction of Chinese and Japanese techniques. Some Koreans were anxious because these influences did not prove the amazing kicking power of the art nor its traditional values or philosophy.

The actual name of Taekwondo wasn’t official until 1955. At that time Korean General Hong Hi Choi organized a movement to combine Korea’s various martial arts styles. He recommended the name “Taekwondo” to an organization specially founded to select a name for the new art. On April 11, 1955, Taekwondo was recognized as the name for the newly combined, officially recognized Korean martial art.

As an interesting side note, the word Taekwondo itself is made up of three Chinese/Korean words: Tae, meaning to kick or jump; Kwon, meaning fist or hand; and Do, which means “the way”. It can be thought of as “The Way of the Hand and Foot”.

In the 1960’s Taekwondo began to spread internationally and developed throughout the late 1900’s. It became a fighting sport, although self‒defense, fitness, and the philosophy of the practice are still main elements of Taekwondo.

Today, Taekwondo enjoys great popularity around the world. More than 20 million people practice Taekwondo in more than 120 countries. Taekwondo was also made an official sport in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.
