3 . Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your choice of sport might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(高尔夫球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortages in some local areas.
In fact, there are many environment friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a pair of good shoes; and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk can regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and control your weight better.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be "green gyms". They are better replacements(代替物) for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.

4 . It seems every major city and town around the world hosts an annual marathon, with thousands of athletes running a gruelling 42.1 kilometres. While many runners' motivation is to beat their personal best and cross the finishing line without collapsing, they're also doing it for a good cause—to generate funds for charity. But like other major events, the marathon also generates a massive carbon footprint. Thousands travel —some by plane—to the location, and waste from food packaging and goody bags gets left behind by spectators and runners. This is becoming a big issue for cities—how to host a worthwhile event, encouraging people to exercise and help charities, while protecting the environment? Several cities have developed formal plans to reduce their environmental impact and promote sustainable (可持续的) ideas. One event in Wales, for example, introduced recycling for old running kit .
It's something that this year's London Marathon tried to tackle by reducing the number of drink stations on the running route, giving out water in paper cups and offering some drinks in eatable seaweed capsules. They also trialled new bottle belts made from recycled plastic so 700 runners could carry water bottles with them during their run. London Marathon event director Hugh Brasner told the BBC: “There are a lot of initiatives (倡议) we are using this year that we think will lead to some huge behavioural changes in the future.”
Meanwhile, some people still think running a marathon could be our best foot forward in helping the planet. Dr Andrea Collins from Cardiff University told the BBC: “Training for a marathon makes you more sustainable in day-to-day activities. I started walking or running to work every day and shunning public transport altogether. Being environmentally friendly while training sticks with you and becomes a way of life. ”
1. Why do many people enter for a marathon?A.To achieve their own ambitions. |

Every year, and more parents complain to their children’s schools about PE. They believe that their children shouldn’t have to participate in physical activity if they don’t want to. Supporters of PE, however, believe that it is a necessary element of all-round schooling and our society’s well-being. They insist PE in schools remains one of the few places by which the youth can be forced to participate in aerobic exercise.
Firstly, they believe that participation in sport promotes health. In fact physical education is a springboard for involvement in sport and physical activities throughout life. Government is, or should be, concerned with the health of its citizens. Encouraging physical activity in the young through compulsory PE fights child overweight and contributes to forming lifelong habits of exercise. This doesn’t have to be through traditional team sports; increasingly schools are able to offer exercise in the form of swimming, gymnastics, dance, etc.
Besides, physical education help to develop character and the mutual respect required to succeed in an adult environment. Playing team sports builds character and encourages students to work with others, as they would be expected to do in most business or sporting environments. Sport teaches children how to win and lose with good grace and builds a strong school spirit through competition with other institutions. It is often the experience of playing on a team together that builds the strongest friendships at school, which endure for years afterwards.
Finally, the pursuit for national sporting achievement begins in school. If schools don’t have compulsory PE, it is much harder to pick out, develop and equip athletes to represent the country on a wider stage. However, it’s much easier to find suitable individuals with a full sports program in every school.

9 . An increasing number of Chinese are jogging to get and stay fit. Most joggers will run alone, but some will jog with friends or even coaches.
The Beijing Olympic Forest Park is one of the most popular spots. It is packed with runners in the afternoon, usually after work, and at weekends.
Jogging after a whole day’s work can be a way to unwind. It is true for He Wenjun, whose workplace is right near the forest park. She discovered her athletic gift at the age of seven, when she began playing tennis. Then she turned to jogging, and she has persevered with it for 10 years. “I come to jog almost every day after work, whenever I have time. I think jogging is good for my health. And for me, a girl, it helps me to achieve to keep slim,” she said.
She says she prefers jogging alone, so she can focus better. She loves jogging, even during Beijing’s smoggy days. “If the smog is severe, I’ll hold off jogging for a while. But if I really want to get away from work, I’ll wear a mask, or just ignore the smog and go on jogging,” she said.
For those who are not so athletic, jogging also has its attractions.
Wu Houbin started roughly two years ago, when he was severely obese(病态肥胖的). Within two months, his weight dropped from 82 kilograms to 64 kilograms. The success helped him recover health, and he has made friends. “Jogging does not require speed, but perseverance. If you want to stick to the game, you need to take it as a task, a habit, and then eventually a hobby,” Wu said.
Jogging is beneficial to heart-lung function, and the skeletal system, but doctors say improper technique damages the joints, especially the knees and ankles. “Excessive jogging wears down the body, and harms one’s health. Poor technique harms the muscles and skeletons, and can cause secondary injuries. And, jogging in a bad environment can cause circulation problems,” said Lu Zhiyong, attending doctor, Sports Hospital, General Administration of Sports.
Dr. Lu has some tips for joggers, and those who are thinking of taking it up.
He says people should first evaluate(评估)their physical condition, to decide the amount and type of exercise, and jogging in the open air is better than running on a running machine. It is recommended that joggers jog three or four times a week, and 30 to 60 minutes each time. The best time to jog is 4p.m. — 5 p.m.
