1 . My brother and I often fight with each other over small things. One day our father said to us, “Tomorrow we will take part in the Ray Home Sports Day. Both of you must go with me. Perhaps you can learn something from those children.” My brother laughed, “Dad, Ray is a home for physically disabled children. What can we learn from them?”

“You will see,” our father said.

Our father works as a volunteer at Ray. The children there have problems with their hands, speech, walking or hearing. Every day, he spends hours helping them to move or exercise their legs or arms.

The following day, he took us to Ray Home. When we got there, we found a nice place to sit down. Finally, the sports began. There was a 50-meter race to see who could run fastest. All the runners were physically disabled. As the race started, all the children moved as fast as they could. Just then, one of the girls fell over and hurt her leg. She began to cry at the top of her voice.

All the children stopped to help the poor girl. Then they all held hands and finished the race together. My brother and I were surprised to see this: the children weren’t interested in winning the race-they were more interested in helping each other to finish the race.

Just over one in four Canadians over the age of 15 participate in sports. They aren’t motivated by fitness or becoming     1     (profession) athletes. The majority said their love of the game inspires them     2    (play) on a regular basis, this holds especially true for second-generation Canadians who regret not     3    (do) sports as kids.

That’s     4     got Sebastian into roller derby (速度溜旱冰运动). Skating on eight wheels filled her heart with joy. “Roller-skating feels like you’ve given     5    (you) a superpower. It’s the closest thing to flying.” She said.

Pay-to-play sports like roller derby     6    (be) not something Sebastian’s family would be able to afford. But as an adult with a job, she could     7    (independent) make that choice: she joined a new skater program last year.

A learn-to-play program also made Sahni’s childhood dreams come true. Following the birth of his son, he realized that second-generation     8    (parent) are in a win-win situation: they could offer their kids the opportunities their moms and dads couldn’t provide, while also     9    (participate) themselves. “When you get to a certain age, you start referring     10     things you missed out on,” he said. Therefore, Sahni joined the True North to learn how to play ice hockey (冰上曲棍球).

My school held an excited sports meet recently. During the event, enjoyment sweep over us all. When the relay race was under the way, the athletes ran fast to pass other competitor. It kept the rest of us on the edge of their seats. “Hold on! You can make that!” the students yelled. In the distance running competition, all people cheered and clapped with runners who passed by. 4 . Why play games? Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules, planning your next move and acting as a team member are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.

Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating .

Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination (协调) needed in hunting.

Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.

Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it — some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.

Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.
