Sports Day was getting close in the school. All the children were very excited and were practicing for the big race. John, one of the fast runners of the school, was confident that he would win for he was not doing anything at all. “You have to work hard to come first in the race John. You are not practicing at all,” said John’s mother.
“Mom, you know how fast I am! Why should I waste my time running? Only I will win; no one else will win!”said John. “John, you may be right but talent (天赋) without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you greatly,” his mother warned him. John just laughed. He was so confident that he would win the trophy (奖杯) as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!.
Tim, a classmate of John, was also participating (参加) in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he practiced till late at night and had developed great endurance (持久力) to run the race.
There were a few days left for the Sports Day but John did not practice at all. On the other hand, Tim practiced day and night.
The Sports Day was almost around the corner but John was confident that no one could beat him and had not practiced at all. But Tim with his hard work had become a very great runner.
At last, the Sports Day arrived. All the students showed up on the ground to cheer their favorites. The coach blew the whistle (口哨) and everyone began to run toward the finishing line. It was so exciting. John and Tim left all the racers far behind. Both of them were neck to neck.

3 . The people of Hong Kong have always worked hard. Sometimes in the past, they had no time for rest or play. Today things have changed, and people have begun to learn how to play as well as working.
Over the past few years, the Government has built swimming pools and sports grounds all over Hong Kong. The Recreation and Sports Service has also played a big part in helping the people of Hong Kong to enjoy sports and outdoor activities. It has set up an outdoor recreation center in Sai Kung, and thousands of people have had short, active holidays with plenty of sports in the countryside. New holiday centers are being prepared in Tsuen Wan, Disneyland and Sai Kung, including a water sports center in Tai Po. The R.S.S. is also helping other organizations to set up holiday camps. The R.S.S. used to be part of the Education Department. Now it has become part of the Home Affairs Department. Students are not the only people who need recreation and sports.
At one time, only rich people could afford to sail, to join squash and tennis clubs, to water-ski, etc. Now more and more people are taking part in more different kinds of sports. Thousands have learnt to swim, or to play such popular games as tennis, football, squash and basketball. Many have discovered the joy of cycling or have learnt to sail. Gymnastics has become popular outside school. Walking and camping in the countryside or on the beach have become weekend activities to many more.
Many people live in small, crowded houses, and work long hours doing boring jobs in factories and offices. Their spare time should not be spent at the cinema or watching TV. They need fresh air and outdoor activities. The Recreation and Sports Service is making many people healthier and happier.

“Number 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle and…”Cheers erupted.
“Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girl's 100-meter hurdles!”
“County championships, here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her worn neon-green track shoes. They were bursting at the seams, but she didn't care. They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her lucky track shoes, excitedly retying them. Pop! She sighed as she stared at the broken-off piece of shoelaces dangling between her fingers.
“Don't forget, guys,” chirped Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”
“Beep. Party recorded in calendar,” joked Jobie in her best robot voice.
Next weekend couldn't come soon enough. Jobie was excited all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before.
The day of Marisol's party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit and her lucky track shoes. "Perfect." She smiled at herself in the mirror.
The party was in full swing when Jobie arrived. She saw two of her teammates rushing toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they said excitedly, “You have to try the slide”. “Slide? What sli…” Suddenly, she saw it. The BIGGEST inflatable slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Without thinking twice, Jobie threw aside her shoes and run toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky but she reached the top in no time. She slid down, and closed her eyes as she let go. “Woo-hoo!”
Jobie couldn't get enough. When it was finally time to go home, she reluctantly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes. As she eyed the area from a distance, panic set in.

10 . All over the world people enjoy sports. Sports help to keep people healthy and happy, and to live longer. Many people like to watch others play games. They buy tickets or turn on their TVs to watch the games. Often they get very excited when “their” player or team wins.
Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers. What fun it is to jump into a pool or lake, whether in China, Egypt or Italy! And think of people in cold countries. Think how many people love to skate or ski in Japan, Norway or Canada. Some sports or games go back thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese wushu, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. They are about one hundred years old. People are inventing new sports or games all the time. Water-skiing is one of the newest in the family of sports.
People from different countries often become good friends after a game together. Sports help them to understand each other. One learns to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace.
