2 . Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork—everything from taking tests to researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips.

Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s good: You can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points from class. Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony(讽刺)? Write them down!

Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or a piece of information. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style.

Don’t overdo it. Don’t go crazy taking notes. You’ll be frantic(慌乱的) if you try to write down every word that’s said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class.

Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat something you miss. If the teacher is going too fast, your classmates will also be happy to hear the information again. If you don’t want to ask in class, see your teacher afterwards. It’s much easier than wondering if you got the notes right as you study.

Compare. Keep your notes handy when you’re doing your reading homework. Compare what you wrote with what the reading says—you may even want to add to your notes as you read.

1. What’s an advantage of note-taking according to the writer?
A.It helps you to get good marks in tests.B.It’s a basic skill in researching a paper.
C.It helps fix your mind on what the teacher says.D.It gives you a better understanding of key facts.
2. Why is Shakespeare mentioned in the passage?
A.To introduce the topic of note-taking.B.To compare writing styles in different times.

A.Students must try to take correct and detailed notes in class.
B.Students should put down only key points while listening carefully.
C.Students must not interrupt the teacher by asking questions in class.
D.Students should put down as much information as possible in class.
3 . Dear Daisy,

Phew! I'm so glad the day is over. I'm really tired, but my first day at school went well.

First of all, we met outside the school building.I was very nervous because my primary school only had 300 pupils but in the middle school there are about 1,300.What a difference! The older pupils are really big.I felt so small waiting there in front of the school.

The head teacher came out and told us to go into the school hall. Then he called our names out to tell us which class we were in. My class teacher is called Mrs. Black. She took us to our classroom. It's on the 5th floor. We aren't allowed to use the lift! I couldn't believe it.

We spent all morning with Mrs.Black looking at our timetables.Everyone in the school had a different timetable.I'm worried that I'll forget my timetable and go to the wrong room.

Lunchtime was OK. I had salad, fish and fruit, which was quite good, and then I went to play football with some of the other boys. They were all friendly and I don't think it will take me long to make friends.

After lunch we started lessons. I had maths and then history, where we started to learn about ancient Greece. That looked interesting.I have to do some homework tonight to find out how the ancient Greek people lived, so I'm going to do an Internet search and look it up in the library.

So far so good.I am quite looking forward to tomorrow, even though I've got science. I hate science!

Yours,

Jason

4 . Anything made of plastic or metal can be 3D printed nowadays — bicycles, toys, tools... even replacement body parts! But the latest trend in 3D printing may be food. Scientists and chefs are putting their heads together to create printed food.

Several 3D printers designed for food are now on the market. Anything that can be made into a soft wet mixture can be squeezed (挤压) from a tube in a 3D printer. Instead of ink, these printers can use fruits, vegetables, proteins, sweets, and more. This makes for lots of combinations that can be healthy, yummy, and even artistic.

Most 3D printers don’t actually cook the food, at least not yet. Engineers at Columbia University’s Creative Machines Lab invented an oven (烤箱) that cooks 3D-printed pizza with laser beams (激光束). A special computer program controls the lasers, heating each part of the pizza to perfection. Unlike regular ovens, lasers can carefully cook each thin piece of 3D-printed food.

In the future, food can be made with a 3D printer to meet our needs. For example, a hospital could design meals to meet patients’ dietary needs. Vitamins, minerals, and even medicines can be mixed right in. A 3D printer can make food appealing. Foods that someone may not like might be more attractive after 3D printing. Maybe that food you dislike wouldn’t seem so bad if it looked like a castle!

The idea of 3D printed food may seem very modern. In fact, NASA (美国国家航空航天局) has been researching the topic for more than ten years. On a long travel, it’s important to have food that is easy to make, tastes good, and has the nutrients astronauts need to stay healthy. Printing food on demand may soon be into the space!

5 . Thanks to this new hands free suitcase, carrying around heavy luggage may soon become a thing of the past. Designed by Israeli company NUA Robotics, this "smart" suitcase can follow you everywhere you go.

The carry-on suitcase, currently a prototype(雏形), connects to a smart phone app via Bluetooth. It has a built-in camera sensor that can "see" you and follow you around on flat surfaces like airport floors. It comes with an anti-theft alarm to prevent someone carrying it away when you're not looking, and it has a backup(备用) battery that you can use to charge all your devices.

"It can follow and carry things for people around while communicating with their smart phone, and avoiding obstacles(障碍)," explained Alex Libman, founder of NUA Robotics. "We're combining sensor network, computer vision, and robotics. So if you download our app, press the 'follow me' button, the luggage recognizes its user and knows to follow and communicate."

NUA is still testing the device and trying to improve features like speed and customization(客户定制), but they hope to make the suitcase available to customers in a year's time. If it proves successful, they want to use the Bluetooth pairing technology to automate lots of other devices, like shopping carts at the supermarket. These devices are especially meant to be useful to the physically disabled and elderly. "Any object can be smart and robotic," Libman told Mashable. "We want to bring robots into everyday life."

The Israeli tech company made it clear that the finished product will look just like a regular suitcase. They're planning to partner with a carry-on luggage maker, since the device that makes it "smart" weighs just 2.5 pounds and can be fitted on old-fashion luggage.

With NUA's smart suitcase, it isn't a burden to carry around heavy luggage. But how will their invention handle tough obstacles like stairs? It will be interesting to wait.

6 . In Wiltshire, England, volunteers are needed to visit a nature protection area to count the butterflies living there and on surrounding fields. The project is started by an environmental protection organization, which has contributed to improving the living environment for wild animals. Recently the organization has asked volunteers to help it observe environmental changes based on the record of butterflies and protect the environment.

In the area, the local people have planted many special flowers with the help of the organization, aiming to see whether these flowers will interest the rare and beautiful butterflies. The project officer Sarah Marshall says, "It will be a suitable habitat(栖息地) for butterflies. They are great 'indicator species' as they are easily affected by weather changes so they make an early-warning system for the environment." She also points out that volunteers are needed to record the number or species of butterflies, and based on the change happening to the butterflies, the hidden environmental problems in the area can be found out in time.

The organization is seeking volunteers to help monitor butterflies from April through to September. They will walk a fixed way and record the different butterflies they met along the way. Each visit should take no more than two hours, and each volunteer is expected to visit once a month to count the wildlife.

No experience is necessary as training and support will be provided, but an interest is important. If you are interested, please contact Sarah on (01380) 725670, exe 278, email sarah@ wiltshirewildlife.org.

7 . The castle had two floors. We were ten years old and sat around the coffee table, drinking from coffee cups filled with water. We talked about our future good friends, girls' dress, make-ups and well-behaved classmates at our daily meeting. We promised each other that this was how our lives would be.

Then we got a little older. I was graduating from the eighth grade. This time we were in a real coffee shop. We were growing up, drinking hot chocolate instead of water, but our conversation hadn't changed. We were going to go to college together. Then we would open a business in the city. We promised each other this was how it would be.

My interests and areas of study have changed many times. I've become involved in many activities that have opened my eyes to new possibilities. My friends are part of my life. I would do anything for them. I know they would do the same for me. In the case of a broken heart, a silly argument, or a difficult test, I am always the first to help. Being there for my friends comes first no matter what else I have to do.

I'm growing up fast. Junior year has almost terminated. College is just around the corner, but our childish talks and plans don't seem so long ago. In fact, we're still having the same discussions. We probably won't go to the same college but would be in the same state. We will talk every day, meet on weekends and come home on holidays. This plan is just as good.

Now I am ready for college. I will meet new people, have new experiences in new surroundings and live on my own. But I will not leave my friends. I won't see them on weekends, but maybe on holidays. I will be making new ones at college. I hope I will become as close with them as I am with those old friends. Maybe if I'm lucky I will meet a few with whom I can sit and share a cup of coffee.

1. What did the author and her friends often talk about when they were ten years old?
A.Their rapid progress.B.Their great imagination.

8 . In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fairweather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).

Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.

At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.

Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor,he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.

There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding,I know I’ve found a friend!

1. Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is the most important in choosing a friend?

9 . Nola (August 21, 1974—November 22, 2015) was a northern white rhino who lived at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park near Escondido, California. At her death, she was one of only four remaining northern white rhinos in the world. The other three lived in Kenya. World Rhino Day,   held on September 2,   is to raise awareness(意识) of the less than 30, 000 other rhinos left on Earth.

''Rhinos need our help today, not tomorrow,'' Nola's lead keeper Jane Kennedy said. ''Last year we lost over 1, 200 rhinos just in South Africa. If we continue to lose more than 1, 000 rhinos a year, in 10 to 20 years all the rhinos on the planet will be gone. ''

''Unfortunately, most animals are in danger of dying out because of humans,'' Kennedy says. ''Humans have either poached animals, or because there are over seven billion of us, we've taken up too much of the world's resources''. Poachers illegally hunt rhinos for their horns. They sell the horns for thousands of dollars per pound, to be used for art, jewelry, and decorations. Experts believe that one rhino is poached every eight hours.

In 1975,   the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research started the Frozen Zoo,   a program through which researchers have collected cell (细胞) samples from more than 8, 000 different types of animals,   including the northern white rhino. Scientists hope that by studying the rhino cells, they will get greater understanding of it, and will find ways to increase its numbers.

Jane Kennedy describes World Rhino Day as a celebration of rhinos along with an awareness campaign for everybody across the world to know that rhinos need our help. ''At the San Diego Zoo, children and adults are welcome to visit and speak with zookeepers to learn about rhinos. But you don't have to live in San Diego to celebrate World Rhino Day. It is observed around the world, with zoos and wildlife parks holding special events and programs to teach people about rhinos, and enable them to see the animals up close. For more information, go to www. worldrhinoday. org.
