1 . From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.

The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created:the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.

You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial(长期的)victims and martyrs. They are leaves tossed(摇摆)by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.

You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.

Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.

If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.

In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

1. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they ______.

A.whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes
B.one’s expectation is the key to future success
C.thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind

2 . Can you imagine an ancient and quiet place? Well, this is Vicenza, my hometown. Every time I have the opportunity to speak about Vicenza with foreign people who do some sightseeing in Europe, I realize that it gets less credit than it deserves. Everybody knows Venice, Rome, and Florence very well, but only a few know the attraction of Vicenza.

Vicenza has to be taken into special consideration for the important historical buildings by Andrea Palladio, who was born in Padua (1508-1580), one of the most famous architects in the world. It was during the Renaissance and the next four hundred years in which Vicenza was under the protection of the Republic of Venice that the great structures were constructed, making Vicenza well-known throughout Europe and giving it the remarkable and distinctive appearance which it keeps today.

Apart from its historical district, Vicenza is surrounded by beautiful hills and countryside where you can spend time walking, sightseeing, and having delicious meals in the numerous restaurants which serve typical foods and good drinks. Moreover, in Vicenza’s countryside there are splendid villas. This is where many Venetians used to spend their summers, farming their land during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Vicenza is a must-see for people fond of historical works. In addition, there are jazz and classical music concerts, ballets, and theatre performances, mostly during the autumn. It may be that young people feel Vicenza is not a place where they can have fun, but there are also pizzerias and pubs where contemporary music is performed, so they can have a good time there, too. Everyone needs to come to Vicenza to get to know it. They will see and touch the contributions to beauty that it made to the world.

1. When it comes to Vicenza, the author thinks _______.
A.it is actually well worth visitingB.it lives up to its reputation
C.just a few people really like itD.foreign visitors are pulled in by it

3 . Dry Ice is a unique substance which has many uses. Essentially, dry ice is frozen CO2. The first report of what we now call dry ice came from the French chemist Charles Thilorier in 1834. In 1924, the Drylee Corporation of America named the solid form of CO2 as "Dry Ice", which is what it is popularly called today.

At normal atmospheric pressure, CO2changes directly from solid to gas. It skips the liquid phase(阶段)which makes regular ice wet. Frozen CO2is also much colder than regular ice. But regular ice freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, CO2 changes from gas to solid at -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit. This extremely cold temperature makes it very dangerous to handle with bare hands. It can cause frostbite in a very short period of time.

Dry ice has been used for a variety of purposes throughout the past century. Its primary use is to refrigerate food when electrical refrigeration isn't available. Through the process of sublimation (when CO2 changes from solid to gas), it can maintain cold food for a long time.

If you've ever been to a play and seen heavy fog on the ground, it is likely that you have seen dry ice in action. This effect can be achieved because CO2 is heavier than air, so evaporated (挥发的)CO2 will sink and accumulate on the ground.

Another interesting use for this substance is to bait(诱杀)insects like mosquitoes. These insects have sensors which guide them to CO2. They find the high concentration of CO2 in dry ice quite attractive.

Mars has long been a mystery for human beings. We have been looking for evidence of life on Mars. In the 1960s scientists guessed that the polar ice cap of Mars was made of frozen CO2. More recent observations have shown that while the topmost layer consists of frozen CO2, the most of it is probably regular frozen water.

1. Frozen CO2 gets its name of "Dry Ice" mainly because______.
A.it is very easy to make it dry
B.we can't melt it and it doesn't get wet
C.it looks like ice at a low temperature
D.it is solid like ice at -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit
2. The underlined word "frostbite" in the second paragraph probably means_______.
A.the shakes caused by cold
B.damage caused by freezing
C.a fever caused by being cold
D.a sharp pain caused by bums
3. According to the passage, dry ice can be used to_______.
A.freeze most of food in the next century
B.increase the production of farming
C.make a vivid fog effect on stages
D.help to improve the environment
4. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Dry ice on Mars is near the polar.
B.Not much dry ice has been found on Mars.
C.The polar ice cap of Mars is unique.
D.No frozen CO, on Mars can be melt.

4 . Last year, the bushfires in Australia burned more than 12.35 million acres of land. At least 25 people were killed and 2000 homes destroyed. According to the BBC, that was the most casualties(伤亡) from wildfires in the country since 2009. The University of Sydney estimates that 480 million animals have died in South Wales alone.

Zeke Hausfather, an energy systems analyst and climate researcher at Berkeley Earth, said warmer temperatures and extreme weather made Australia more susceptible to fires and increased the length of the fire season. "The drier conditions combined with record high temperatures in 2019 created main conditions for the disastrous fires. Australia's fires were worsened by the combination of those two. 2019 was the perfect storm for being the warmest year on record for Australia and the driest year on record for Australia," Hausfather added on Friday.

Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, said warmer ocean temperatures are also contributed to more variable weather around the world. Trenberth believes that global warming contributed to energy imbalances and hot spots in the oceans, which can create a wave in the atmosphere that locks weather patterns in places, causing longer rain events in Indonesia, for example, and at the same time contributing to drought in Australia. He said that once an area experiences drought conditions for two months or more, it increases the risk of fires catching and spreading. Those changing weather patterns due to global warming make drought events longer.

Climate experts stress that climate change is not the only factor in the severity(严重) of wildfires. How land is managed can also impact the amount of fuel available for fires. Practices like controlled bums and other factors can impact the risk to people and property, such as warning systems and the type of development in a given area. Changing those policies has great potential to limit future damage from wildfires along with changes to how fire management resources are dispatched(派遣).

1. What are the numbers about in paragraph 1?
A.The causes of Australian fires.B.The results of Australian fires.
C.The damaged areas of Australian fires.D.The property destruction of Australian fires.
2. Which of the following best explains ''susceptible to" in the second paragraph?
A.Very quickly to adapt to.
B.Very seriously to focus on.
C.Very likely to be influenced by.
D.Very easily to be protected against.
3. What can we infer from Trenberth’s research?
A.Longer dry weather contributes to global warming.
B.Global wanning is also a main cause of the bushfires.
C.Warmer ocean temperatures leads to the fires directly.
D.The imbalanced energy leads to the temperature rising.
4. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A.To stress the effects of Australia fires.
B.To show the methods for land management.
C.To predict the seriousness of Australia fires.
D.To provide some advice about reducing fire damage.

5 . It is common to have difficulties sleeping during the day. Humans are naturally wired to sleep best at night and be awake during the day. However, modern work schedules require some people to try to accommodate the unnatural schedule of shift(轮班)work — being awake at night and sleeping during the day.

In order to make this adjustment, you need to pay special attention to your sleep environment and your preparation for sleep. If shift work is a necessary part of your work life, here are some suggestions that may help.

Arrange to sleep uninterrupted in a quiet, dark room. This means you may have to turn off or unplug your phone, hang darkening curtains on the windows or wear a sleep eye mask, and train your family and friends to leave you alone while you sleep.

Fit in a nap(小睡). When your daytime sleep period is too short, taking a short nap of less than 30 minutes just before work or on a break has been shown to improve alertness and enhance performance.

Develop and follow a sleep routine. It's best if you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Try not to vary this too much on weekends. Your body likes routine.

Take extra care to make healthy choices. You may be tempted to reach for unhealthy foods or nicotine to stay awake or alcohol to try to sleep. But ultimately these choices are more harmful than helpful.

If you have tried all these things and are still having problems getting enough quality sleep during the day, talk to your doctor or a sleep specialist. Sometimes medications(药物治疗)may be helpful and safe. In other cases, there may be an underlying sleep disorder that needs to be addressed.

3. On which condition should a person turn to a sleep specialist for help?
A.If he suffers from a sleep disorder for the first time.
B.If a good sleep environment is greatly needed for him.
C.If he falls to get quality sleep through his own efforts.
D.If he has the problem of bailing to sleep in the daytime.

6 . People as far away as South Africa have called Melody Pugh in Washington D. C. to help them find a beloved family member. The country’s only licensed and bonded “pet detective”, this 58- year-old former police officer is an expert on thinking like a dog or cat.

It all started in April 1998 when her beloved kitty, Norman, was stolen from the car after arriving at the vet’s office. Pugh searched for Norman for 95 days, quitting her job because the search became all-consuming, and during that time she found 27 other lost pets. That's when she discovered she had a nose for finding clues --- a paw print here, a broken spider web there.

While there are other pet finders, Pugh is the only person in the U. S. registered as a licensed pet detective 一 and there's a big difference. "Pet finders may make posters and phone calls, but they won't actively track your pet or get personally involved because they aren’t bonded and can’t afford to get sued(起诉),” says Pugh, who has never been sued. She was able to obtain a Private investigator's license from the State of Washington in 2001 because of her background in law enforcement.

Pugh has returned more than 1,000 dogs and cats to their homes in almost every state nationwide. Nearly two million companion animals are stolen each year, often right from their owner's yard, and then sold to research laboratories, dog-fighting rings, or puppy mills.

7 . A new railway design is allowing the latest high-speed rail line to pass through national natural reserves while causing only minor effect to local wildlife.

The Xi’an-Chengdu high-speed rail is the first bullet train to cut through the Qinling Mountains, in Shaanxi province, which are home to many rare wild animals including the giant panda, golden monkey, crested ibis and golden takin.

It is one of three major habitats for the wild giant panda, with about 345 of China’s 1,864 wild giant pandas living there, according to the fourth National Survey on Giant Pandas released in 2015. The railway will also pass through a major Tianhuashan Mountain reserve, a giant panda habitat.

"When researching the railway route, we avoided laying tracks more than 1,500 meters above sea level, where the majority of wildlife gathers," said Lai Wenhong, an engineer from the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group, who is in charge of the railway’s environmental design.

More than 90 percent of the railway through the Qinling Mountains is tunnels and bridges, said Liu Shuangjin, general chief designer of the line’s Shaanxi section from the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group.

"The advantage of tunnels is to reduce vibration(震动) when a train passes by," Lai said.

The average depth of the tunnels is 400 meters, and the deepest is 1,000 meters. Bridges are constructed to link tunnels. Protective things have been placed at the mouths of tunnels in the Qinling Mountains to keep wild animals from falling. During operation, trains are forbidden from using horns in wildlife habitats.

The line also passes through the Yangxian county reserve, home to crested ibis, a rare bird. The 4-meter-high mesh(网状物) on the sides of bridges higher than 10 meters will prevent the birds from flying into the path of trains, which is safer for the birds and the trains.

A.The golden monkey.B.The giant panda.
C.The crested ibis.D.The elephant.
3. Why are so many tunnels built on the Xi’an-Chengdu high-speed rail?
A.To protect endangered wildlife.B.To lower the cost of construction.
C.To reduce the distance of the line.D.To connect different bridges.
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Rail design keeps wildlife safe
B.More national reserves are set up
C.The railway’s environmental design is important

9 . George, once known as “Midnight Memory Maker,” had been given away after his original owner, Todd Mathieson, died and his wife, Diane, could no longer care for him. She found a new home for George so that he could continue to race for a number of years.

In September, 2018, George was turned over to the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Boston. When he arrived at the league’s adoption center in Dedham, he was slightly underweight, and in need of medical care. But, over all, he was in good health, the league said.

George recuperated (休养) for a few months in Dedham before being put into foster care. “He was highly intelligent, elegant, well-trained and had clearly known love. He was very engaged with humans,” Cordula Robinson, George’s foster parent, said in the statement.

Robinson wanted to help George go home. She contacted animal rescue agencies up and down the East Coast to see if anyone recognized him. To her surprise, someone from New Jersey recognized George as once belonging to Todd Mathieson. He was well known and owned a stable in Connecticut, said Michael DeFina, a spokesman for the ARL. George is notable for his distinctive colors, such as white patches on his hooves (蹄子) that look “like socks,” DeFina said. They went through show photos to confirm George’s identity and contacted his original hostess.

Diane Mathieson was “overwhelmed and ecstatic (欣喜若狂)” about the possibility of reuniting with George.

After 13 years apart, George was transported to his family in Ocala, Florida, where he will enjoy his retirement. “He seems to be walking taller,” Diane said.

1. Why was George given away by his original family?
A.He was a trouble-maker in the community.B.He often got lost for his poor memory.
C.The family couldn’t provide enough care.D.His wife had found him a new home.
2. What did Cordula Robinson do for George?
A.Bring him to the adoption center.B.Help his reunion with the family.
C.Take some show photos for him.D.Build an elegant stable for him.
3. Who is the owner of George now?
A.Todd Mathieson.B.Cordula Robinson.
C.Michael DeFina.D.Diane Mathieson.
4. What can we infer about George?
A.He used to be a race horse.B.He enjoyed his retirement.
C.He lost both of his parents.D.He was hard to recognize.

10 . If you come across two drivers who stop in the middle of the road in this richly forested island community, they’re probably arguing — about how to improve the local fairgrounds (游乐场), or property taxes, or the teen drop-in center. They argue about everything in South Whidbey, Washington, and that’s a good thing.

“Don’t bother to honk your horn (按喇叭),” resident Susan Knickerbocker says. “When they’re done, they’ll be done. They won’t move before that, so you just wait it out.”

This frequent scene is one sign that people care deeply about their town. “We argue passionately about where we want our community to go,” says Josh Burnett, who writes for the South Whidbey Record. “But at the end of the day, we’ll all say hi and shake hands at the farmers’ market on the weekend.”

That love for debate — passionate and constructive — has made South Whidbey residents intensely proud. Because, as stubborn as they are, everyone gets to work. That’s how they have created a first-class food bank and a no-kill animal shelter; developed new methods for residents to make — and accept — donations of veterinary (兽医的) services, oil changes, and advice on paying medical bills; and more. One group of volunteers is well-known for rescuing abused horses.

Another resident, Linda Briere, wrote on the Reader’s Digest Facebook page, “The love of country, joy of living, and the let-the-other guy-live-but-with-a-helping-hand make me proud.”

Of course, working for the greater good is what many communities do. What’s unusual about South Whidbey is that residents pull together despite the kinds of cultural differences that make progress difficult in so many other parts of the country. South Whidbey is home to sizable populations of farmers, artists, Christians, retired vets, Republicans, Democrats, and independents, and the clash (碰撞) of ideas inspires them.

The one thing they never disagree on is that their island is profoundly special.

1. How does the writer lead in Para.1?
A.By making comparisons.B.By giving examples.
C.By providing statistics.D.By offering possibilities.
2. What can you do if you run into two drivers in South Whidbey arguing in the middle of the road?
A.Give suggestions.B.Wait until they finish.
C.Ask them to shake hands.D.Prevent them from fighting.
3. Which of the following can best describe people in South Whidbey?
A.Passionate for their hometown.B.Proud of farmer’s market.
C.Satisfied with their property taxes.D.Ridiculous in their behavior.
4. What is mainly discussed about South Whidbey in this passage?
A.Its beautifully forested surrounding.
B.Some people with different cultures.
C.The special feature of the community.
D.Its brief history and different customs.
