5 . Families will be rewarded for the first time for putting out less rubbish under new plans to significantly promote recycling, especially of valuable materials like glass.

The new plan for collecting waste in England will scrap fines (罚款) for putting plastic in the wrong recycling bin. Instead, families will be offered rewards for recycling more rubbish measured by a microchip (芯片) in the rubbish bin. Caroline Spelman, an Environment Secretary, said, “It is better to use a plan that offers people rewards, rather than punishing them. We want to help those people who want to do the right thing by reducing waste and recycling at home. This means making sure communities are getting the collection services they want and not punishing hard-working families who make mistakes by putting bins out on the wrong day or leaving the waste in the wrong recycling bin.”

Though the punishment for putting waste in the wrong recycling bin has been given up, plans to try and remove the unpopular twice-a-week bin collections have largely failed despite the efforts of Eric Pickles, a Communities Secretary. Although Mrs. Spelman made it clear that communities will be supported in efforts to increase the times of collections, and the Conservative Party will not force local authorities to return to weekly collections. Most communities expect the introduction of weekly rubbish collections, as this will solve some of the problems about environment.

6 . Optimism (乐观) doesn’t mean paying no attention to things that cause stress. But when bad things happen, optimistic people are less likely to be unhappy about themselves and more likely to see the bad things as something that lasts a short time.

A new research has found a direct connection between optimism and healthier diet and exercise behaviors, as well as better heart health, a stronger immune system (免疫系统), better lung function, and lower death risk. “Optimistic people, regardless of sex, often have goals and the confidence to reach them,” Lee said. “Those goals could include healthy habits that contribute to a longer life.”

Studies find only about 25% of our optimism is controlled by our genes (基因), and the rest is up to us. It turns out we can actually train our brain to be more positive. Researchers studied the brains of monks (僧侣) and found surprising results: Tens of thousands of hours of meditation(冥思) had changed the function (机能) of their brains, which support positive qualities. And that may be key in producing the effect on the body.

There are simple mental exercises to develop an optimistic attitude. One of the most effective ways to increase optimism is called the “Best Possible Self” method. That is to imagine ourselves in a future in which we have achieved all our life goals. And keeping a diary in which we list the positive experiences we had can also help shape our attitude. Taking a few minutes each day to write down what makes us thankful can improve our view on life, too.

7 . Being a polite airline passenger starts with just a few easy steps.

Help your fellow traveler

While you're loading your carryon bag into the overhead space, offer to lift a fellow passenger's up there, too. Not only is it kind, but it could make the boarding process more efficient for everyone else.

Keep your personal things well, personal

It's important to be mindful of your personal belongings. Avoid hitting other passengers with your bag, as you walk down the aisles(过道), by keeping it in front of you and close to your body. And once you sit down, you should stay there, and make sure you have everything you will need for the flight once you settle in your seat. Reaching over other passengers to access the overhead storage during the flight is uncomfortable for everyone.

Respect your (limited) space

In the narrow space of an airplane, maintaining your personal space will go a long way towards making a smoother ride for everyone. Let the middleseat passenger use the armrests (it's the least you can do), and keep your legs within the width of the chair frame.

Be willing to swap seats with a family

Airlines sometimes reserve certain seats for special passengers or charge extra fees for adjacent(毗连的) ones, making it tough for family members to buy seats together. If you're traveling alone, offer to switch seats so that a family can sit beside each other; it's a kind gesture that they won't forget. But be sure to delay swapping until the plane has reached the safe altitude,as switching seats while everyone is boarding can be an inconvenience for those standing in the walkways.

1. To be a polite airline passenger, you need to do the following except________________.
A.lending a helping hand to your travelling companion
B.using the armrests to support your arms if you want
C.avoiding reaching over others to open the overhead storage
D.keeping your bag in front of you while walking down the aisles

D.put off swapping unless it is safe enough
3. Where can you most probably find the text?
A.In a daily newspaper.B.In a literature book.
C.In an airport guidebook.D.In an official document.
8 . Health experts have long known that vitamin D is important for healthy bones and teeth. It may also help to protect the body against diseases such as diabetes and cancer. And now, researchers say vitamin D might help fight brain diseases called dementia (痴呆).
Dementia is a brain disease that damages thinking and memory processes, which scientists call “cognitive (认知) abilities.” Dementia is difficult to treat. Taking care of someone who has dementia is extremely demanding. And the disease is very frightening to sufferers. Chris Roberts suffers from dementia. He says the worst part of living with this disease was getting lost while driving. “The worst thing that I found was getting lost in the car, not just forgetting where I was going— I wouldn’t know where I was.” More than 47 million people around the world suffer from dementia. The World Health Organization reports that 60 percent of them live in low- and middle-income countries.
We get vitamin D from some foods like nuts, lentils (扁豆) and fatty fish. We also get vitamin D from the sun. But that is not dependable. In some parts of the world, there is not enough sunlight to provide enough vitamin D. Also, sunblock prevents the vitamin from entering the body. To add to the problem, the skin’s ability to process vitamin D weakens as a person ages.
Researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey are exploring the relationship between vitamin D and dementia. The team recently measured vitamin D levels and cognitive ability in older people. Nutritional sciences professor Joshua Miller led the team. He said cognitive abilities differed among the study subjects. He said tests showed that about 60 percent of the group was low in vitamin D.
1. Which of the following is true about vitamin D?
A.Vitamin D can decrease people’s risk of heart diseases.
B.Vitamin D helps the body fight against cancer.

A.Boring but rewarding.
B.Disturbing and frightening.
C.Disgusting and stressful.
D.Hard and tiresome.
3. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.How vitamin D affects people’s health.
B.Where people get vitamin D.
C.Whether sunlight can produce vitamin
D.D. Why people’s age influences the production of vitamin D.
4. Where can we most probably read the passage?
A.In a travel brochure.
B.In a literature magazine.
C.In a science journal.
D.In a commercial advertisement.
