1 . In the 1960s and 1970s, the greatest fear was that the human race, and possibly all advanced life forms on the planet, could be wiped out by nuclear missiles. Today, however, environmental problems have taken over as the greatest risk to life on Earth. Scientists are thinking of ways to lower this risk, such as replacing coal and oil with forms of renewable energy. But they are also preparing for the worst: what can we do if the terrifying scenes in films such as The Day After Tomorrow happen in real life? What is our plan B for Earth?

One option is to explore other planets to see if we could live on them. The most likely choice is Mars, which is relatively close to Earth and has an environment less hostile than that of other planets. Mars has fascinated people since ancient times, and today our interest in Martian exploration is greater than ever before. Besides, more governments are making efforts to educate the public on the Red Planet.

There is no doubt that humankind is drawn towards Mars. However, sending people there will require all the skill, courage and intelligence. While the Moon can be reached within days, it would take months to reach Mars, travelling through dangerous solar radiation. And even if the first settlers do reach Mars safely, they may not be able to return to Earth — ever. Staying alive will be a daily challenge, but as proved by the Biosphere 2 experiment, not impossible. As early as the 1980s, scientists were building Biosphere 2 in the Arizona desert, consisting of a closed space in which people, animals and plants could live together. Although the two-year experiment was not a success, it did provide us with a better understanding of how humans might be able to live on another planet.

For now, human settlement of Mars is still decades away. Until we are finally able to live on another planet, we need to take much better care of our own. Right now, it's the only one we have!

3 . Today we communicate over the Internet all the time. In this blog post, I want to discuss how we keep our Internet communications well protected.

"How are the mobile apps safe?" I can hear you ask. It is a good question. They all use encryption(加密)to make sure no one else can eavesdrop on your messages with your friends, family, and business partners. Apple is one of the first to do this for its users; however, it started encrypting the message between iCloud users and the shortcoming is that the encryption only works between iCloud users.

Many of us are used to being able to take our computers down to the local coffee shop or with us when we travel, connect to any Wi-Fi, and then keep doing what we always do on the Internet. What you may not be aware of, however, is that public Wi-Fi is not encrypted. Anything done on those wireless networks can be known by some bad people. So how do you protect the wireless? It can be protected by using a Virtual Private Network(VPN).

As with the encryption protection for E-Mail and messaging, there are a lot of VPN providers out there that don't cost a lot of money. Any person or organization can research and decide which one is best for their needs. Using a free VPN isn't suggested. Free VPN providers can be uncertain because they get much of their pay through pushing ads to their users. And they can follow and record what to do, which kind of fails the purpose of using a VPN in the first place.

Returning to how a VPN can protect your communications, we could go into a lot of details about what a VPN does, but we will keep it simple instead. Unlike the protection above, which is very specific, a VPN works by creating a passage between you and a distant server. This passage is encrypted, which means that everything you send through it is protected from being listened. This can be especially useful if you are working at a coffee shop or an airport.

1. Where does the text probably come from?
A.A website.B.A guidebook.
C.A personal diary.D.A scientific magazine.
2. What does the underlined phrase "eavesdrop on" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Care about.B.Miss out on.
C.Get something by accident.D.Listen secretly to something.
3. What is the disadvantage of using the encryption of Apple?
A.It works slowly.B.It costs you too much.
C.It is unsafe sometimes.D.It is limited to certain user.
4. Paragraph 4 implies that a free VPN           .
A.requires extra fees for long-time usage
B.may cause risks to personal information
C.pushes ads according to your interest
D.fails to be encrypted sometimes

4 . Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee. In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.

Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy(书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.

But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.

In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.

1. What can we learn about the Character Hero?
A.It’s open to people of all ages and all walks.
B.It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China.
C.It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.
D.It draws great public attention across the country.
2. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?
A.Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.
B.Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.
C.Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
D.Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.
3. .According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is_________.
A.necessary for adults to survive in China
B.a requirement made by the Education Ministry
C.helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive
D.an ability to be developed only when you are students
4. Where does this text probably come from?
A.A news report.B.A science report.
C.An advertisement.D.Children’s literature.

5 . Next-generation fitness equipment and robots help you cook dinner. Those are a few of the countless new products expected to be shown next week at CES, the annual tech conference that typically sets the tone for the biggest trends of the year. Home automation, health and 5G will once again be hot topics, but many companies will also introduce pandemic-specific features to reflect our increased time at home.

Each year, reporters, exhibitors and investors typically explore Las Vegas showrooms filled with giant TVs, smart cars and robots, but CES will be online only for the first time in its 54-year history due to Covid-19.

The Consumer Technology Association, the nonprofit behind the four-day event starting Monday, said 1,800 exhibitors from around the world will fill its "digital venue" this year—a number that's down significantly from 4,000 in-person exhibitors last year. The move will allow tech companies from countries which have never attended before to take part in the online exhibition, but could also make it harder for smaller companies to get noticed without a physical showroom.

Registered attendees will be able to stream and re-watch keynotes from companies such as Verizon (VZ) and General Motors (GM), tune in to breakout sessions — about how, for example, technology is playing a role in vaccine deployment—and search through a registry of exhibitors to watch new product presentations.

It'll lack some of the signature ingredients of the trade show, such as hands-on time with the latest small machines and networking. But the technology that makes our lives more connected and convenient will still gain popularity.

1. What are the new products mainly connected with?
A.People’s daily life.B.Everyday busy work.
C.The popularity of 5G.D.Countless housework.
2. What do we know about the tech conference?
A.It takes place every two years.B.It attracts fewer exhibitors this year.
C.It is held mainly on the Internet.D.It prohibits small companies to attend.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards the move?
A.Supportive.B.Disappointed.C.Doubtful.D.Casual.
4. Where are the text possibly from?
A.A brochure.B.A textbook.C.A newspaper.D.A guidebook.

6 . A city in Netherlands is planning to construct a pretty bike path made of recycled wood.

The first of its kind in the world, the path near the city of Emmen will be surfaced not with the usual asphalt(沥青) but with wood chips packed together with organic resin(有机树脂).

The idea behind the path is to cut the use of conventional, less eco-friendly materials such as concrete, which is very difficult to recycle. And the creation of the wood chips will require no direct cutting down of trees; the company leading the experiment, Grontmij, plans to use waste products from sawmills(锯木厂).

The idea of creating a permanent road from a material that is celebrated for its biodegradability(生物降解性)might seem ridiculous. But the engineers working on the path insist that the wood and resin surfacing will stay in good condition for a long time, with a working life at least as long as concrete or asphalt. Rudi van Hedel, project manager of bio-based economy at Grontmij, explained that the light weight of the material also makes it far easier to move.

However, van Hedal said, “At present, the material costs of the path are higher than those of traditional paths made of asphalt or concrete, but the construction costs are comparable or perhaps slightly cheaper. We expect that as production ability increases, the costs will go down. In the future, we hope to use bio-fibres(生物纤维)that are cheaper than the wood fibres we’re currently experimenting with, and we expect that biodegradable materials will be able to compete with asphalt and concrete.”

1. What can we learn about the path?
A.It uses some asphalt.B.It aims to protect trees.
C.It is a pioneering project.D.It is being built by a sawmill.
2. What do the engineers stress about the path in Paragraph 4?
A.Its material is heavy in weight.B.It can stay in service for long.
C.Its length may break a record.D.It is environmentally friendly.
3. According to van Hedal, what is a disadvantage of wood fibres?
A.Their production process is complex.B.They are not as hard as asphalt.
C.They are not always available.D.Their costs are relatively high.
4. Where is the text most likely from?
A.A diary.B.A novel.C.A magazine.D.A guidebook.

7 . Roboticists at the University of California San Diego have developed an affordable, easy to use system to track the location of flexible surgical robots inside the human body. The system performs as well as current state of the art methods, but the whole system, including the robot, magnets and magnet localization setup, costs around $100. Many current methods also require exposure to radiation, while this system does not.

The system was developed by Tania Morimoto, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, and mechanical engineering Ph. D. student Connor Watson.

“Continuum medical robots work really well in highly constrained (受限的) environments inside the body,” Morimoto said. “But it becomes a lot harder to track their location and their shape inside the body.” The researchers used existing magnet localization methods, which work very much like GPS, to develop a computer model that predicts the robot’s location.

GPS satellites ping (发送) smartphones and based on how long it takes for the signal to arrive, the GPS receiver in the smartphone can determine where the cell phone is. Similarly, researchers know how strong the magnetic field should be around the magnet placed in the robot. They rely on four sensors that are carefully spaced around the area where the robot operates to measure the magnetic field strength. Based on how strong the field is, they are able to determine where the tip of the robot is.

Morimoto and Watson went a step further. They then trained a neural network to learn the difference between what the sensors were reading and what the model said the sensors should be reading. As a result, they improved localization accuracy to track the tip of the robot. “Ideally we are hoping that our localization tools can help improve these kinds of growing robot technologies. We do want to push this research forward so that we can test our system in a clinical setting and eventually translate it into clinical use,” Morimoto said.

1. What be learnt about the system according to the text?
A.It’s complex.B.It’s low-cost.
C.It’s delicate.D.It’s radioactive.
2. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

C.I’ll be easy for us to operate.D.It’ll be tested with real patients.
4. Where is this text most likely from?
A.A diary.B.A guidebook.
C.A magazine.D.A novel.

8 . Do you think it enough to have eight hours of sleep per might? Napoleon didn't agree with it. His saying went something like this: "Six hours for a man, seven for a woman and eight for a fool." But Napoleon's words weren't right, either. The ideal amount of sleep is different for everyone and depends on many factors, including age and genetic makeup.

In the past 10 years, my research team has surveyed sleep behavior in more than 150,000 people. About 11 percent slept six hours or less, while only 27 percent clocked eight hours or more. Most people fell in between. Women tended to sleep longer than men, but only by 14 minutes. Bigger differences are seen when comparing various age groups. Ten-year-olds needed about nine hours of sleep, while adults older than 30, including senior citizens, averaged about seven hours. We recently-found the first gene related to sleep length—if you have one kind of this gene, you need more sleep than if you have another.

Although it's common to hear warnings about .getting too much sleep—and 80 percent of the world uses an alarm clock to wake up on workdays—it's not difficult to figure out how much sleep we need. We sometimes overeat, but we generally cannot oversleep. When we wake up naturally, feeling comfortable, we have slept enough. In our modern society, we sleep about two hours less per night than 50 years ago. This sleep deprivation greatly decreases our work performance and harms our health and memory.

1. What main point does the writer try to make in Paragraph 1?
A.Napoleon has his own sense of sleep time.
B.The quality of sleep time is more important.
C.Having 8 hours of sleep per night is common sense.
D.Different people needs different amount of sleep time.
2. What do we know from Paragraph 2?
A.Women sleep much more than men.B.The older one is, the longer one sleeps.
C.Most people sleep between 6-and 8 hours.D.The sleep time is decided by gene.
3. What does the underlined phrase “steep deprivation” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Too much sleep.B.A light sleep.C.No enough sleep.D.A deep sleep.
4. Where does this passage probably come from?
A.A guidebook.B.A school report.C.A novel.D.A scientific research.

9 . Japanese businessman Katsuo Inoue chose Italy for his summer vacation this year. He enjoyed the views of Florence and Rome—without ever leaving Tokyo.

Inoue and his wife “flew” to Italy on First Airlines, a company known for entertainment, not transportation. The Tokyo-based company entered the growing virtual reality (虚拟现实) market, as people face travel restrictions (限制) because of COVID-19.

“I often go overseas on business, but I haven’t been to Italy,” Inoue told the Reuters News. “My impression was rather good because I got a sense of actually seeing things there.”

The “passengers” on First Airlines sit in the first or business-class areas of an “airplane”. They   are   even   given   a   life   vest   and   oxygen   mask.   Workers   serve   meals   and   drinks   as large screens show passing clouds and other views outside the airplane. The “travelers” then receive virtual reality eyewear that provides true-to-life tours of places like Paris, New York, Hawaii and Rome and other Italian cities.

Japan has recorded over 50,000 infections (感染) and just over 1,000 deaths. A second wave of infections starting in July has stopped most travel in and out the country. The country’s biggest airline, ANA Holdings, said the numbers of passengers flying to foreign countries fell by 96 percent in June. And the International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicted last month that it would take until the year 2024 for international travel to recover.

But Hiroaki Abe, president of First Airlines says, “Our business has increased by 50 percent since the start of the travel restrictions. We get some customers who normally travel to Hawaii every year and they can experience some of that here.”

1. What do we know about Inoue’s trip to Italy?
A.It was a trip on business.B.It was a virtual visit.

10 . Faced with a declining population and workforce, Japan has been increasingly turning to robots for help. Over the years, the robots have carried out a large number of human tasks, including building products and providing care for the elderly.

However, the robots currently being used by companies, like Walmart and Amazon, are only able to perform single, repetitive tasks, such as stacking boxes. Model-T, on the other hand, has a wider range of movement and is able to hold, pick and place objects of several different shapes and sizes into different locations, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores, which sell a large variety of items.

Model-T robots are operated from a distant location by human “pilots” wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset and special gloves, which allow them to feel the product the robot is holding in their hands and guide it to the right shelf.

The VR-controlled robots are ten times cheaper than automated robots, because they don’t require advanced programming and are easier to develop and maintain. And their easy-to-use controls require little training. Tomohiro Kano, a general manager in charge of development at FamilyMart, believes this will enable the chain to recruit workers who would typically not work in stores.

Though Model-T appears to be getting rapidly through the experiments, it is not quite ready to enter the workforce. Besides being a lot slower than humans, it is also only able to lift packaged items, and cannot get hold of things such as fruits and vegetables. The company is working to improve the weaknesses and hopes to introduce a faster, more skillful Model-T within the next two years. They believe that in addition to the stores, the robots could also be useful in hospitals, allowing doctors to do operations from remote locations.

1. What is one of the features of Model-T according to the text?
A.It works much faster than humans.B.It can easily hold all kinds of objects.
C.It can be operated from a distance away.D.It is harder to produce than an automated robot.
2. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The low price of Model-T.B.The easiness to operate Model-T.
C.The low-level programming of Model-T.D.The strict training for maintaining Model-T.
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Model-T is now being massively produced.
B.Japan’s workforce will be reduced by Model-T.
C.The weaknesses of Model-T have been overcome.
D.Model-T may be used in wider fields in the future.
4. In which section of a website can we read this text?
A.Technology.B.Economy.C.Lifestyle.D.Environment.
