2 . Constantly forcing knowledge and experiences into your brain may seem like the quickest path to self-improvement. But sometimes the best thing you can do for your brian is absolutely nothing at all.

Taking time to space out — whether by showering, pulling weeds, or petting a dog — provides an opportunity for what psychologists call wakeful rest. It’s a time when you can put immediate tasks aside like how to meet the work deadline and instead focus on current feelings, reflect on the past, and think about the future.

In the blankness, MRI (磁共振) brain imaging shows a harmony of gray matter called the default mode network (默认模式网络) takes control. Neuroscientists (神经系统科学家) still don’t completely understand how this system works, but they think it connects inharmonious parts of our brains, which can help us find meaning in our messy lives. “This blankness might also reduce anxiety, boost creativity, and improve memory,” says Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, a neuroscientist at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute.

The trouble is, the battle of life leaves little room to let your mind wander. Many spend their free time-consuming entertainment. It may feel relaxing but requires brainpower to enjoy. Fortunately, there are ways to encourage your resting-state network to take over:

FIND YOUR JOY

Casual hobbies that are totally different from your day job can help prevent out-of-office anxiety.

GET AWAY

New surroundings give your brain a break from environmental cues, like the sight of your desk and laptop, that tell it to work.

SWITCH OFF

Information can be too attractive to ignore. Turning off any and all devices helps maintain relaxation mode.

1. What is “wakeful rest” according to the psychologists in the text?
A.It is a time to space out.B.It is a system to take control.
C.It is a state to concentrate.D.It is an opportunity to work.
2. In what aspect can this blankness benefit us?
A.Promoting creativity.B.Managing moods.
C.Removing anxiety.D.Controlling brains.
3. Which activity does the author suggest to a stressful software engineer?
A.Working on his desk in a new office.
B.Playing his favorite computer games.
C.Doing some gardening in the backyard.
D.Developing a software with colleagues.
4. Where can we probably read the text?
A.A book review.B.A science journal.
C.A guide book.D.A film poster.

3 . Canadian-Iranian designer Roya Aghighi wants you to imagine that your shirt is alive. Aghighi hopes we can develop a more close relationship with fashion-by treating clothes as living beings that need our help to survive.

Aghighi's thought experiment isn't as far-fetched as it might seem. Working with a group of scientists at the University of British Columbia(UBC), she has invented a living, biofabricated photosynthesizing(生物制造光合作用的)fabric, which purifies the air around it. She named it LivingC.

UBC claims it's the first living and photosynthesizing fabric, and has fashioned the material into transparent clothing. While clothing like these are still in the early stages of research and design, and far from mass production, they challenge the fashion industry to reimagine ways it can reduce its huge carbon footprint through alternative fabrics.

Fashion is one of the world's most polluting industries. It's responsible for more carbon emissions than international flights and shipping combined, amounting to 10% of all greenhouse gases emitted globally.

US consumers are buying more clothing than ever, wearing each item fewer times and sending almost 70% of the clothes and footwear produced each year to landfill, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

While Aghighi's new and advanced clothing is now only at the proof-of-concept stage, buyers may one day be instructed to stretch the fabric out in front of a window before putting it on. Biotechnology is a big business. Beyond the world of fashion, it's seen as an alternative for polyurethane plastics—the world's most common plastic, which is used in everything from bags to outdoor furniture as well as in fabrics.

Aghighi predicts consumption habits will take a long time to change. "It is going to be a slow shift," she said. "But I hope that it's going to be a long lasting one."

1. How can we understand "shirt is alive" in Paragraph 1?
A.We imagine that it is alive.

4 . One of the tallest wooden buildings in Europe, a 98m timber mixture skyscraper, is to rise in Berlin.

The 29-storey WoHo Tower, to be designed by a firm of Norwegian architects, is intended to be a “light-house project” for low-carbon construction, towering over Potsdamer Platz and the Landwehr Canal.

Its core, including lifts and a staircase, is to be built around a steel-reinforced concrete structure but the rest of the building, including flats, offices, cafes and a kindergarten, will be fashioned down wooden beams and panels.

“As Norwegians, we are used to working a lot with timber,” Nicolai Riise, CEO of the Mad Architects’ Practice said.

“The thing about timber is that it demonstrates sustainability from top to bottom. The carbon footprint is close to zero and it’s a fantastic material to build with. If you look at this in a broader way, it’s one of the ways we are going to be able to beat the climate crisis.”

Wooden skyscrapers, once regarded as an unprofitable pipe dream, have become a realistic prospect with the coming of cross-laminated building techniques and more flexible planning laws. Because these structures’ parts are fit with care, they can be far lighter than their concrete equivalents and are thought to be relatively resistant to fire. A cubic meter of wood can also take an estimated ton of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

Larger wooden structures are planned elsewhere. London is examining blueprints for the 300-meter Oakwood Tower. A project in Tokyo could rise to 350m.

1. What can we know about WoHo Tower?
A.It will be among the tallest in Europe.B.It will be mostly made of wood.
C.It is designed by a Norwegian architect.D.Its core is to be built with timber.
2. Why do Norwegians prefer timber to construct buildings?
A.Timber is too flexible.B.Timber is easy to process.
C.Timber is eco-friendly.D.Timber is multi-functional.
3. What makes it possible to build wooden skyscrapers?
A.The concrete equivalents.B.Creative planning.
C.Fire-resistant materials.D.New building techniques.
4. In which section of a newspaper can you find this text?
A.World.B.Comment.C.Literature.D.Business.

5 . It is not rare in China that many seniors take advantage of their retirement years to please their grandchildren.

Some are good at sugar figure blowing art-the maker uses sugar as its basic material to boil and blow into various figures. Some can weave, using even the most unexpected materials such as leaves, and some excel in carpentry, using wood to carve lifelike dolls and toys.

Recently, in a small village in Fujian province, one — and — a — half — year — old Dandan became the most enviable child. His grandfather made a wooden " mantis cart (螳螂车)"for him. The wooden components on both sides of the cart would rise and fall with the metal wheels, resembling a mantis. This one-of-a-kind toy was filmed by the child's parents and posted online, immediately arousing curiosity.

The grandfather, Li Shishui, 70, who has been a carpenter for more than 50 years, retired in 2018. In his spare time, he picks up his old craftsmanship and uses the scrap (小块)wood from his old house to make the "mantis cart" with long legs. He also makes pure wooden toys such as robots , birds and even an   "Iron Man".

When Dandan goes out in the “ mantis cart",   it never fails to turn heads and children of the neighbors next door shout and cry to their parents for one too.

Full of childlike fun, fatherly love and delicate design, the wooden toy, not merely catches the heart of children in his neighbourhood, some netizens also express their envy after watching online videos. "I want a grandpa like him too. " "Does grandpa want a granddaughter?" Some also recollect that although their grandfather is not a carpenter, these videos have brought back their fond memories when they were young — their grandfather also made some gadgets (小物件)for them.

6 . It may be the decoration color of the moment, but painting your bedroom wall grey could actually keep you awake.

Grey isn't the only color you should avoid if you're reaching for a paintbrush. "Reds, browns and purples can all delay a peaceful night's sleep," says Natalie Armstrong, a sleep expert at mattress company Sealy.

She says, "While your room is dark when you go to sleep, many of us spend an hour or more in our bedrooms with the light on before going to sleep , which is the color of your bedroom can be so disruptive.

“Colors that are too bright can put your brain into a state of high alert, which can last long after you've turned the light off and can no longer see the color.”

Grey, white gentle, is also quite suppressive. The absence of any strong color has a depressive effect on the brain because it is a color typically used to represent sadness. While the current trend for grey is trying to change this, the deep rooted associations of grey as a dull color can make it a bad choice for bedroom decoration.

The real color champion when it comes to good sleep is blue, which is easily picked up by ganglion cells in the retinas of your eyes. The cells then send a message direct to your brain that you're in a calm environment.

And while the phrase "tidy house, tidy mind" might be ordinarily used in the daytime, it can be just as relevant at night-time. If you're trying to sleep in a room that' s heavy on clutter, you can carry that unsettled feeling into your subconscious when trying to fall into sleep, says Armstrong.

1. What's the main idea of this text?
A.The color of the bedroom walls affects sleep.
B.Dark colours can delay a peaceful night's sleep.
C.The decoration of the room plays an important role.
D.Grey isn't a suitable colour for bedroom decoration.
2. What can we infer from Natalie Armstrong's words?
A.Grey is a dull colour.B.Blue represents sadness.
C.Purple does good to our sleep.D.Red can make people excited.
3. Why is a tidy room beneficial to sleep?
A.Because it upsets people.B.Because people don't care.
C.Because it makes people feel stable.D.Because people are fond of clean environment.
4. From which is the text probably taken?
A.A medical book.B.A health magazine.
C.A science report.D.An advertisement brochure.

7 . Many people who live on Norway’s far-northern island of Sommaroey are campaigning to go “time-free”. They note that between May and July, the sun does not set there for 69 days.

To enjoy the bright summer months, they would like to ignore traditional business hours. For example, stores would be open when people are there to work at them. Schools would operate when teachers and students are ready. Kjell Ove Hveding is one of the local leaders of the campaign. He said the 350 people who live on the island already go mostly time-free. He said that in the summer at 2 in the morning, you might see “children playing soccer, people painting their houses or mowing their lawns, and teens going for a swim”.

To show their feelings about time, many islanders take off their watches. They leave them on a bridge that connects the island to the mainland.

Earlier this month, Hveding met with a Norwegian lawmaker. Hveding presented a formal request signed by people who live on the island. The request asked the government to declare the area a “time-free zone”.

Hveding noted that he understands going completely time-free would be too complex in a world that operates on schedules. And, as an article in the Smithsonian magazine says, people’s health depends on keeping a usual rhythm of being asleep and being awake.

But Hveding argues that letting go of time limits can also be good for people. He said the time-free proposal would permit the islanders to get used to the daylight and feel calmer. “The idea is also to chill out,” he said, “I have seen people suffering from stress because they were pressed by time.”

1. What does the underlined expression in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Islanders plan to abandon the working hours.B.Islanders try to make full use of time.
C.Islanders hope to break the time limits.D.Islanders want to save their free hours.
2. What do we know about the formal request presented by Hveding?
A.It was put forward by a lawmaker.B.It was approved by the islanders.
C.It was rejected by the government.D.It was about a “trade-free zone”.
3. Why does the author mention Hveding’s opinion in the last paragraph?
A.To introduce the lifestyle of the islanders.
B.To present people’s suffering from time pressure.
C.To show the article’s view in the magazine is wrong.
D.To prove going time-free would be beneficial to the islanders.
4. Where is this text most likely from?
A.A news report.B.A travel brochure.
C.A health magazine.D.A science fiction work.

8 . Small seating in the economy-class (经济舱) sections of airplanes is not just uncomfortable but potentially life-threatening. Space has become so tight that passengers cannot protect themselves in the event of a crash.

A report on a long distance flight from the doctors of Vienna stated that only 10% in economy class could adopt the recommended brace position on the plane's safety tips in case of emergency. And 30% of their fellow passengers traveling in first class could adopt the position, which is internationally recognized as improving the chances of survival in the event of a crash. The authors of the report are now calling for greater space between seat rows to increase safety.

A spokesman for British Airways (BA), which is responsible for safety on all British planes, opposed the idea that small seating was a menace to passengers, "We don't think it is a safety matter," he said, "We have high safety standards and all UK aircraft meet them?" In the past month, both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic introduced sleeper seats, stressing the outstanding comfort in the front of the planes. But that space gained is space lost in economy.

Until recently, economy class was at least “bearable”— with an 86-centimeter seat Scheduled Airlines such as BA and KLM gave passengers enough leg room and comfortable eats. But the arrival of new, weight-saving seats caused economy class to take a turn for the worse. Extra rows have been put into the plane, with the result that the average seat now is 79 centimetres. Singapore Airlines has become the latest carrier to narrow down its seats. It announced free wine for economy passengers last September, but at the same time reduced leg room by 8 centimetres. Some Qatar Airways offer the chance to upgrade - at a price - to seats which, at 89-91 centimetres, are roomier than those of most Scheduled Airlines.

1. Which is true according to the report from doctors of Vienna?
A.10% of passengers in economy class adopt the brace position.
B.More spaces could increase the chance of survival.
C.30% of passengers on board adopt the brace position.
D.Passengers in first class are most likely to survive.
2. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “menace” in Paragraph 3?
A.Threat.B.Advantage.C.Bonus.D.Concern.
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Scheduled Airlines produced new comfortable seats for economy class.
B.Doctors from Vienna said less space between seats could increase danger in the crash.
C.Spokesman for BA declared that narrow seat space was a threat.
D.Qatar Airways offered larger seats with no more charge,
4. Where does the passage most probably come from?
A.A biography.B.A book review.C.A magazine.D.A realistic novel.

9 . First and foremost, “The Great Salmon Run (鲑鱼洄游)” looks amazing. It is beautifully filmed, done in completely natural and sometimes friendly way and never looking still. The editing is always brief and smooth and the scenery is pure magic. A wide diversity of the different landscapes are included rather than just one habitat. The music fits very well, beautiful and appropriate.

Again, like so many Attenborough’s nature/wildlife documentaries, “The Great Salmon Run” fascinates, teaches, moves, entertains and attracts. In terms of the facts there is a very good mix of the known ones and the unknown. Some facts are familiar to us while some are going into details about the different animals, their challenges and some truly amazing wildlife events in their struggles for survival and interaction with other animals whether prey (猎物) or predator (捕食者).

Certainly the salmon are a thing of beauty but the brown bears similarly have impressive moments as well. It may not be novel territory for Attenborough, but animals are what one can’t get enough of. Besides, there is so much freshness to the material that it won’t make one feel going round in circles but absorbed.

Narration (解说) by Attenborough helps significantly. He clearly knows his stuff and knows what to say and how to say it. He delivers it with his usual richness, soft-spoken enthusiasm and sincerity, never talking down to the viewer and keeping them wanting to know more. Viewers care for what goes on in front of and behind the camera.

At no point does “The Great Salmon Run” ever feel like just a series of scenes. Instead, it feels like its own story and journey, with real, complex emotions and conflicts and animal characters, all of which are developed in a way a human character would in a film.

Overall, amazing.

1. The writer thinks in narration, Attenborough ________.
A.changes his usual style
B.keeps the viewers interested
C.ignores what the viewers want to know
D.thinks what to say is more important than how to say it
2. According to the passage, what do we know about The Great Salmon Run?
A.It not only entertains.
B.It is set in only one main habitat.
C.It is Attenborough’s finest work.
D.It focuses on the struggle between the salmon and man.
3. What is the writer’s attitude towards The Great Salmon Run?
A.He considers it average.B.He is negative about it.
C.He holds an objective view.D.He thinks highly of it.
4. The passage is probably a ________.
A.journalB.travel guide
C.film reviewD.science report

10 . An estimated 60 percent of cats and 50 percent of dogs in the U. S. are overweight or obese, so chances are that your pet needs to lose weight rather than pack on some pounds. It's not always easy to tell if your pet could afford to lose few, but there are some other signs that can tip you off. One important factor the waist, "Most people don't know what a normal cat should look like," says Romine. "But cats should have waists, too." The vet says you should be able to feel your pet's ribs(肋骨) through its coat, and when you look down at them, they should have an hourglass(沙漏)shape---just like person.

"For some overweight pets, you may want to switch to new food entirely; foods with 'light' or 'healthy weight' labels usually have an increased fiber content to help the dog or cat feel fuller," Romine notes. "Another option is to feed them less of the food they currently cat," Freeman suggests. "Make sure you're reducing table scraps(残羹剩饭)and high-calorie treats like pet biscuits," she says.

It's important to figure out what your pet's ideal weight is as you're helping them to lose. Romine advises working with your vet to get the right number, and if you're following the portion guidelines often printed on food labels, feed them the amount of food associated with the weight you want them to be, rather than the weight they currently are.

Food isn't the only factor that can impact your pet's weight. Romine stresses the importance of exercise in keeping your pet healthy. For cats, just 10 minutes of indoor play each day can make a difference. For dogs, letting them out in the backyard to do their business is not enough. You'll have to exercise with your dog to really get them moving.

C.The food with "light" labels.D.The food with new label.
3. What is an important factor to keep pets healthy?
A.A partner.B.Exercise.
C.Pet biscuits.D.Protein.
4. From which is the text probably taken?
