Application requirements
Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis. Applicants who submit a completed application can expect an admission decision within 5 – 7 business days.
·Include basic contact information from you and your parent(s) or guardian.
·Tell us why you want to take the course and a little about yourself through a short-answer essay.
·Share a piece of writing, video or social media content that reveals something about yourself (optional).
·Submit the $35 application fee.
·Students must be at least 14 years old or older.

Application fees and enrollment deposits are nonrefundable. All course cancellations requests must be made in writing to precollegeonline@usc.edu. Any tuition paid to the university will be refunded, not including fees and deposits, if requested by the application deadline for the related course.
The university will not refund tuition for Online Pre-College Exploration courses for students who are removed from the program due to breaking our Letter of Understanding for Online Participation and our Student Code of Conduct.

2 . Auckland University Online Education — What to Expect
Most Auckland University (AU) online programs are 100 percent online so that students do not come to the school campus. Instead, AU has designed a media-rich, easy-to-use learning environment through a Learning Management System (LMS).
· Discipline (纪律)
With disciplined work habits, you are likely to succeed as an online student. It is up to you to log on to your course and meet your own deadlines.
· Time Management
In order to earn competitive grades, plan on spending a minimum of 20 — 25 hours a week on each course. AU courses operate on a seven-week schedule, with start dates in January, March, May, July, September and November. Students are able to complete two courses per semester by taking one seven-week course at a time.
· Professional Connections
Many of the AU faculty (教员) who teach online have connections to industry, so the online learning environment ensures access to diverse expertise and practice. It includes an extensive network of professionals in a variety of industries.

3 . Online classes began to be popularized just a few decades ago. They are advertised as a way for adults to finish their education and students to learn the material at their own pace -- it is far more suitable for people with busy schedules.
But after being enrolled in an online course last fall semester, I came to realize online classes were merely a means to fulfil course requirements.
First of all, students lack the desire to learn and they simply complete their assignments to receive credit for a passing grade rather than genuinely engage with the course material.
As online courses tend to have more than 100 students, most of the assignments are short and simple. They are not designed for students to interact with the material in depth but designed to be graded easily to accommodate such a large number of students.
Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of taking an online class is the absence of face-to-face interaction between the teacher and their students. Live sessions are infrequent and are often scheduled during the middle of the day when students have to attend other classes or work. The office hours of the professor may also be during inconvenient times for many students as well. Most interaction with the professor has to be through email which is often impersonal. It is nearly impossible for students to build a relationship with their professor.
There is also little interaction among students. It can be harder to create study groups and form relationships with their peers.
Online classes also require either a computer or laptop and a reliable Internet connection. Not all students have access to these types of resources, whether it is for financial or other reasons, and some students can be put at a disadvantage.
Offering online classes certainly helps students who would otherwise not be able to attend classroom sessions. However, they fail to provide a genuine education with an emphasis on convenience rather than critical thinking. We need restructured online classes in which students can have a learning experience that will actually provide quality education.

6 . Jordan Mittler has been spending weekends teaching seniors in New York how to use technology for years, but he never expected he would be streaming a class online.
He has taught texting, emailing and video chatting to dozens of seniors for years, beginning when his grandparents first got smartphones. Teaching them how to use apps and send messages inspired the teen to offer his services to more older people. In February 2019, he created a formal curriculum and started hosting free, hour-long sessions for seniors every Sunday.
Immediately, he was flooded with interested participants. His course, spread out over 10 weeks, was an instant success. One of his favorite lessons was helping his students surprise a family member with a video call.
But when the coronavirus hit New York City, Jordan had to end his classes. He wasn’t sure if he could move the lessons online—it was much easier to help students understand their devices in person —but he knew the importance of keeping older folks connected online. Most of the attendees were retired or lived alone and needed to find ways to connect with family members remotely. “It gives them somewhere to be and something to do,” he said.
So he spent a week ensuring each student could use Zoom, an online video chat platform. For most of the seniors, that meant calling them individually with step-by-step instructions. Since then, online classes have been going smoothly. He has reworked his curriculum to include tasks relevant to life in isolation, like staying in touch with family, checking the news, and playing online games.
His project, Mittler Senior Technology, has taught Jordan the value of making intergenerational relationships. He frequently invites his teenage friends to participate in his classes, hoping more young people will take time to help older relatives or neighbors.

With the development of network, distance learning is gaining more popular. People’s opinions about it varies from one to another. In my opinion, it won’t replace with traditional learning. Firstly, it isn’t suitably for students who prefer direct communication with teachers. What’s bad, studying online too long will do harm to students’ eyes. However, it is its flexibility in time and place which benefits teaching and learning. Also, it releases teachers from repeat the same contents since the video or audio materials can played repeatedly. So it is a effective addition to traditional learning.
Briefly, the combination of distance learning and traditional learning can help students realize their potential when putting into practice.
