文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了各种各样的谈话者和各种不同谈话的特点。

3 . Perhaps some of your richest and most satisfying experiences have been with people to whom you can just talk, talk, talk. As you speak, previously untapped springs of ideas and emotions begin to flow; you hear yourself saying things you never thought you knew.

Happiness, in the final analysis, comes from other people, from a feeling of kinship with the world. An evening of good conversation with congenial friends is about the cheapest form of happiness you can buy — and about the most exhilarating.

Of course, there are all kinds of talkers, and all kinds of talk. Let’s look at some of them.

Saying little, meaning much

There is a well-known anecdote about Cal Coolidge, “Silent Cal”.

A young newspaperwoman was sitting next to him at a banquet, so the story goes, and turned to him mischievously.

“Mr Coolidge,” she said, “I have a bet with my editor that I can get you to say more than two words to me this evening.”

“You lose,” Coolidge rejoined simply.

Words, words, words

Jimmy talks and talks and talks — it’s not so much the quantity you object to as the repetitiousness. He phrases, rephrases, and re-rephrases his thoughts — using far more words than necessary, overwhelming you with words, drowning you with them, until your only thought is to escape, or maybe how to die.

Words that convince

Jack expresses his ideas forcefully, almost brilliantly, and in a way that calls for wholehearted assent and agreement from an intelligent listener.

Dull and flat

Some people are completely lacking in originality and imagination — and their speech shows it. Everything they say is trite, hackneyed, commonplace — their words and speech patterns are an indication of dull, unquestioning minds.

1. Coolidge can be described as___________.
A.expressiveB.laconicC.inactiveD.talkative
2. Jimmy is very likely a(n)___________person.
A.expressiveB.laconicC.fluentD.wordy
3. Jack’s speech features___________.
A.mental keennessB.meaninglessness
C.noisinessD.awkwardness
4. Some people’s speech in the last paragraph can be characterized as ___________.
A.originalB.uniqueC.stimulatingD.uninteresting

4 . Shyness is something that many people battle with every day. They are afraid to look people in the eyes and have a hard time speaking to new people. This makes it very hard to get ahead at work and in making new friends and business connections.     1     There are ways to get around this fear and get out there and start talking to people.

●Remember that most people are not looking at you. When you are shy you may believe that people are constantly watching and judging you.     2     Most people are always busy looking at themselves and worrying about what people think of them. When you are talking to someone new they are not picking apart your every word; they are worried about what you think of them.

3     Instead of always complaining yourself about things you think you are not doing better, turn your focus to the things that you do well. Your self-talk is very important to how you feel. Stop negative self-talk. Instead remind yourself every morning of all the great things you have to offer. Whenever you start feeling shy again run over your list of things that makes you happy.

You should spend about 30 minutes a day walking or doing something physical you enjoy. 文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章主要讲述青少年和父母之间发生的冲突及解决方案。

5 . Conflict (冲突) between teenagers and parents happens for a lot of reasons. Sometimes conflict happens between teenagers and parents just because conflict happens between human beings anyway. Humans have different needs, different feelings, different opinions about what they want, and the relationship with people can be really difficult. However, teenagers can cause further conflict because of the hormonal (生理的) changes that are happening and the stage of life that they're in.

Teenagers and parents have different understanding about rules and at times they find it difficult to look into the future. So parents and teenagers will often experience conflict about many things, do chores, homework, whether teenagers speak respectfully or not and about what they're allowed to do.

Before we think about rule boundaries (界线) for teenagers, we need to make sure that we have a really good relationship base. There's no point saying “From now on, you have to listen to me”: if you don't have a positive relationship with your teenager. We need to go back and make sure there is some degree of shared respect, and some degree of positive communication and enjoyment being together. you do that first, it means that rule boundaries are a lot easier to set up.

Often we're dealing with conflict on the fly. This is not the right time to be dealing with it. We really want parents and teenagers to sit down and think about the kinds of things that may happen in the house before the problems come. The more detailed your rule boundaries are for teenagers, the more likely it is that they are going to follow them. So this means we don't have rule boundaries like “Have the bathroom cleaned”. It needs to be “The floors mopped, nothing on the countertop and the mirrors cleaned by ten o'clock every Saturday”: Rule boundaries need to be written down, and set out ahead of time so the teenager knows exactly what's expected.

1. What's important to set up a rule boundary easily for teenagers?
A.Being strict from the start.B.Developing a good relationship with them first.
C.Saying"No" to their requirements.D.Avoiding close talks with them.
2. Which of the following rules are teenagers most likely to follow?
A.Doing some housework.B.Having a good reading habit.
C.Cleaning the bathroom.D.Finishing your homework by five.
3. What do the underlined words "on the fly" in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.In a hurry.B.On the plane.C.By oneself.D.Another day.
4. What's the best title for the text?
A.Growing PainsB.Teenage Problems
C.Parent-Child Conflict and SolutionsD.Knowing the Conflict

6 . How to Show Respect

Whether you’re talking to your best friend or a stranger, respecting them shows that you’re kind and considerate. Here are some easy ways to show respect in your life.

Listen to others.

Practice active listening to show you respect others.     1     Nod your head and ask follow-up questions to stay focused in the conversation. Even if you disagree, try to consider the point of view before responding.

Confirm (肯定) people’s opinions.

When you’re talking to someone, confirm their opinions in your own words. You can also mention their achievements to let them know you see how hard they’ve worked. You could say something like, “What you just said was really cool.     2    ” Or, “I can tell you’ve worked super hard to get your business off the ground.”

Apologize when you’re in the wrong.

It shows a great deal of maturity (成熟). If you mess up, a simple “I’m sorry” goes a long way. Try not to make excuses for yourself.     3     For example, if you forgot a deadline, you could say, “I’m really sorry. I’ll be setting reminders so this doesn’t happen again.”

    4

Stick to your word. If you commit (承诺) to an event or make plans with someone, come through on your end of the deal. Being reliable shows respect for people’s time. Have your materials in order and complete all the necessary work ahead of time.     5     It can be tough at first, but it’s better to be honest.
