文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,讲述了学习外语的几大常见的误解。

1 . As a speaker of 10 languages I know the benefits of speaking more than one language. To start with, we need to dispel (消除) four common misconceptions about language learning.

You have to have a gift for learning languages.

No, you don’t.     1     In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. They can’t just all be gifted at languages. In language learning it is attitude, not aptitude (天赋) that determines success.

    2

Some immigrants to North America never learn to speak more than broken English. Yet we meet people in other countries who speak flawless English. With the Internet, language content is available to anyone with a computer.     3

To learn a language you need formal classroom instruction.

Classrooms may be economical to run and a great place to meet others. They have the weight of history and tradition behind them. Unfortunately, a classroom is an inefficient place to learn a language.     4     A majority of school kids graduate unable to communicate in languages that they study for 10 or more years.

I would love to learn but I don't have the time.

How about the time you spend waiting in line or going for a walk? Why not use that time to listen to a language on your iPad? Once you get started, even 10 or 15 minutes a day will soon grow to 30 minutes a day, or one hour.     5     As I do, you will find the time.

A.That’s my experience.
B.Anyone who wants to, can learn.
C.Where you live is not a problem.
D.You need to speak in order to learn.
E.You have to live where the language is spoken.
F.The more students in the class, the more inefficient it is.
G.We simply have to change the way we go about teaching languages.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。介绍了几种如何让自己专心为上课,为考试做准备的方式。

3 . Preparing for exams can be hard, especially with online classes.     1    , and working with technology can sometimes become heavily distracting (令人分心的). Aside from the obvious tips people give such as sleeping and eating enough, there are more ways to ensure preparation for your classes. Here are some helpful tips on revising how you approach exams.

Clear your study spot.

The environment we study in is so essential and important to remain focused when studying for classes. A messy space is known to not be beneficial for focusing!     2

Shut off distractions.

It is so easy to get lost on social media or answering texts and direct messages throughout the time you're supposed to be focusing. Putting your phone and apple watch away can help remove any possible tempting distractions while you're trying to study.     3    . If you have to use technology, like an iPad for studying, make sure to keep social media applications off the device to help keep a steady focus.

Have a rest.

If you’re a perfectionist (完美主义者), it can be challenging some days to let yourself sit back and take a break    4    . It will be less mentally draining and you may even feel more energized after a much needed study break!

    5

Sitting at a desk for hours upon hours, even with little breaks here and there can cause gravity to not push as much oxygen to your brain, adding to a stressful study session. During your breaks, make sure to move around a bit in order to keep blood flowing and your body well-energized and moving.

Get past procrastination (拖延) and fully prepare for your tests with these helpful tips!

A.Get enough exercise and keep healthy
B.You will focus so much better if you are alone
C.Make sure your study is comfortable, inviting and clean
D.It is super easy to quickly lose concentration while studying
E.Giving yourself some extra time will greatly benefit you in the long run
F.Also, shutting off text notifications (通知) on your Mac can really become beneficial
G.You need to keep yourself fueled during those long hours of brain exercise, but make sure your food is healthy

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,讲到大学里一种常见现象——同龄人辅导,选择同龄人做导师的一些好处以及注意事项。

4 . Peer tutoring is one of the most helpful tools to use during your college years. Sometimes you will not have all the answers and you may need help from time to time.     1     Peer tutors are understanding, helpful and honest enough to help you out through any obstacles you could be experiencing.

Expect constructive criticism

2     Tutors are not being strict with you because they want to be mean. They simply want you to be the best of your ability. The only way for them to ensure this is to be completely honest with you.     3     Feel fortunate that your peer tutor is recognizing your mistakes and giving you a chance to repair them before your professor has a chance to fix your grades for them.

Expect change

You will leave the appointment with a changed perspective on your work and your method of completing it.     4     However, it is up to you to utilize what they teach you to your best ability. If a tutor teaches you how to do a math problem in a way that makes sense to you, but is also different from what you have learned in class, you will have to use that method because it works for you. Like I mentioned, change is good. It is by no means something to be afraid of. Embrace it!

Expect discipline(sometimes)

5     We are human, after all. It is nothing to be ashamed of. However, if a tutor notices that you have been slacking off , do not be surprised if they call you out for it. Your tutor wants you to use your potential to do the great things that they know you are capable of.

A.Sometimes, we all try to get by with a little less.
B.With their help, you will find it easy to get an A+ .
C.Accept that you are not perfect and that you will make mistakes.
D.Every tutor has a different teaching style that is unique to them.
E.This will probably be the most uncomfortable part of the session.
F.Peer tutors may seem difficult and demanding, but you will find them actually nice.
G.There is probably no better way to get some academic assistance than from your fellow students.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲的是一个研究小组对医院洗手间的烘干机清洁效果进行实验,发现受试者如果洗手不彻底的话,烘干机的效果实际上还不如纸巾。

5 . Pubs and other public places should rethink fitting washrooms with high-speed electric hand dryers because paper towels do a better job of containing germs when people do not wash their hands properly, researchers say. A study found that the dryers left more contamination (污染) on poorly washed hands when compared with old-fashioned paper towels. They also caused virus particles to be blown on to clothing and people who used them left a trail of microbes (微生物) when they touched surfaces.

The findings are relevant, the authors of the study said, because even healthcare workers often take shortcuts when washing their hands. A previous survey found that only 40 percent stuck to recommended hand-washing practices. The study involved an experiment where volunteers dipped their hands in a liquid containing a harmless virus and dried them using either an air dryer or paper towels. The participants also wore aprons to measure how contamination had spread to their clothing. They were then asked to walk through a hospital while touching surfaces such as lift buttons. Samples were collected from surfaces that volunteers had touched and from the aprons.

On average, the levels of contamination to surfaces volunteers touched were ten times higher after hands were dried with an air dryer than with paper towels. Researchers also saw greater transfer of microbes to the apron when volunteers used the air dryer. “The study was performed in a healthcare setting and has important lessons for health institutions that still have high-speed air dryers, but the results are also relevant for public restrooms,”Dr Ines Moura, a research fellow at the University of Leeds and an author of the study, said. “Based on the contamination observed, we question the choice of air dryers.” The study was published in the journal Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

1. What findings does the study get?
A.Paper towels can better help reduce contamination.
B.Restrooms should be equipped with more paper towels.
C.Paper towels cause virus particles to get on to clothing.
D.Hand dryers did a better job when it comes to containing virus.
2. Why do the researchers think the findings significant?
A.Because people prefer using hand dryers nowadays.
B.Because people like dipping their hands into the water.
C.Because people touch surfaces such as lift buttons a lot.
D.Because people don't wash their hands thoroughly enough.
3. Where is the study most probably conducted?
A.In a pub.B.In a lift.C.In a hospital.D.In a laboratory.
4. What is the purpose of this text?
A.To advocate the authority to ban the use of hand dryers.
B.To arouse people's attention to the problem of hand dryers.
C.To call on people to wash their hands as recommended.
D.To warn people not to use hand dryers in public places.

A Run to Remember

Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body. I also had to deal with my parents’ bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded suburb.

When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony(小马), had to be sold.

Feeling helpless and alone, I couldn’t eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I missed my family, my home and my pony. Finally, my father, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an old red horse for me at a local market.

My horse, Cowboy, was without a doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon-toed and knock-kneed. But I didn’t care about his faults. I loved him beyond all reasons.

I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful registered horses.

When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly out of the game. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the timed-speed events. I chose barrel racing(绕桶赛), an event in which a horse and its rider attempt to complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.

One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.

The bitter memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑)made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(运动场地). We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way home I would be so tired; those five miles seemed twice as long.

All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the course with case.
