1 . As a speaker of 10 languages I know the benefits of speaking more than one language. To start with, we need to dispel (消除) four common misconceptions about language learning.

You have to have a gift for learning languages.

No, you don’t.     1     In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. They can’t just all be gifted at languages. In language learning it is attitude, not aptitude (天赋) that determines success.

Some immigrants to North America never learn to speak more than broken English. Yet we meet people in other countries who speak flawless English. With the Internet, language content is available to anyone with a computer.     3    

To learn a language you need formal classroom instruction.

Classrooms may be economical to run and a great place to meet others. They have the weight of history and tradition behind them. Unfortunately, a classroom is an inefficient place to learn a language.     4     A majority of school kids graduate unable to communicate in languages that they study for 10 or more years.

I would love to learn but I don't have the time.

How about the time you spend waiting in line or going for a walk? Why not use that time to listen to a language on your iPad? Once you get started, even 10 or 15 minutes a day will soon grow to 30 minutes a day, or one hour.     5     As I do, you will find the time.

The environment we study in is so essential and important to remain focused when studying for classes. A messy space is known to not be beneficial for focusing!     2    

Shut off distractions.

It is so easy to get lost on social media or answering texts and direct messages throughout the time you're supposed to be focusing. Putting your phone and apple watch away can help remove any possible tempting distractions while you're trying to study.     3    . If you have to use technology, like an iPad for studying, make sure to keep social media applications off the device to help keep a steady focus.

Have a rest.

If you’re a perfectionist (完美主义者), it can be challenging some days to let yourself sit back and take a break    4    . It will be less mentally draining and you may even feel more energized after a much needed study break!

Sitting at a desk for hours upon hours, even with little breaks here and there can cause gravity to not push as much oxygen to your brain, adding to a stressful study session. During your breaks, make sure to move around a bit in order to keep blood flowing and your body well-energized and moving.

Expect constructive criticism

    2     Tutors are not being strict with you because they want to be mean. They simply want you to be the best of your ability. The only way for them to ensure this is to be completely honest with you.     3     Feel fortunate that your peer tutor is recognizing your mistakes and giving you a chance to repair them before your professor has a chance to fix your grades for them.

Expect change

You will leave the appointment with a changed perspective on your work and your method of completing it.     4     However, it is up to you to utilize what they teach you to your best ability. If a tutor teaches you how to do a math problem in a way that makes sense to you, but is also different from what you have learned in class, you will have to use that method because it works for you. Like I mentioned, change is good. It is by no means something to be afraid of. Embrace it!

Expect discipline(sometimes)

    5     We are human, after all. It is nothing to be ashamed of. However, if a tutor notices that you have been slacking off , do not be surprised if they call you out for it. Your tutor wants you to use your potential to do the great things that they know you are capable of.

Pubs and other public places should rethink fitting washrooms with high-speed electric hand dryers because paper towels do a better job of containing germs when people do not wash their hands properly, researchers say. A study found that the dryers left more contamination (污染) on poorly washed hands when compared with old-fashioned paper towels. They also caused virus particles to be blown on to clothing and people who used them left a trail of microbes (微生物) when they touched surfaces.

The findings are relevant, the authors of the study said, because even healthcare workers often take shortcuts when washing their hands. A previous survey found that only 40 percent stuck to recommended hand-washing practices. The study involved an experiment where volunteers dipped their hands in a liquid containing a harmless virus and dried them using either an air dryer or paper towels. The participants also wore aprons to measure how contamination had spread to their clothing. They were then asked to walk through a hospital while touching surfaces such as lift buttons. Samples were collected from surfaces that volunteers had touched and from the aprons.

On average, the levels of contamination to surfaces volunteers touched were ten times higher after hands were dried with an air dryer than with paper towels. Researchers also saw greater transfer of microbes to the apron when volunteers used the air dryer. “The study was performed in a healthcare setting and has important lessons for health institutions that still have high-speed air dryers, but the results are also relevant for public restrooms,”Dr Ines Moura, a research fellow at the University of Leeds and an author of the study, said. “Based on the contamination observed, we question the choice of air dryers.” The study was published in the journal Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.

The bitter memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑)made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(运动场地). We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way home I would be so tired; those five miles seemed twice as long.

All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the course with case.
