6 . My family would describe me as anything but a risk-taker. “Grandma drives faster than you!” my younger son likes to joke with me. So when I announced I was going to step outside my comfort zone and sign up for a self-defense course, my children, my husband, and even my mom were a bit doubtful.
A gym near my house was offering free two-hour classes including boxing, wrestling and judo(摔跤和柔道). I signed up for it and for the next days I questioned whether yoga would have been a wiser choice. The morning of the class, I pulled up to the gym, grabbed my water bottle along with a bit of courage I brought with me, and walked inside. We learned how to kick and knee someone where it counts and how to strike using the palms of our hands, After the instructor showed various escape techniques, I wondered what I was doing there. Seconds later, I reminded myself that I was on a search to push my boundaries(极限). By the time class ended, I was full of energy.
Before I entered the gym, I never imagined I would have the confidence and courage to throw a punch that could discourage someone twice my size. Almost two years later, I still attend classes. As the oldest female in the class, I push myself to keep up, try harder and, more importantly, not quit.
Between increasing my strength and feeling confident about protecting myself (although I hope I never have to test my skills outside of the gym), I'm proud of the risk I took in signing up for the course. I know that defending myself s not about strength; it's about strategy(策略). At the same time, I'm calmer and less anx1ous—a benefit my family enjoys. As for my driving, after a recent lunch date, my mom suggested I speed up to at least the speed limit. She didn't want to be late for her tennis match.

I lost all my hair at age two due to a disease. All I wanted growing up was to fit in. I would look at all the beautiful girls and think, “If I had hair, I would be beautiful, too.”
I wore a wig(假发) and was teased for it. They would call me “bald(秃头)” or say, “Lindsay has no hair.” They were right, so I just let them bully me. And I felt like I deserved it.
Sports became my escape, and I was fortunate to have athletic ability. I would race home every day and play basketball in my driveway for hours. I would pretend to make the game-winning shot. The crowd would go wild. I never thought about my bald head during these moments, but rather who I wanted to become and what I wanted to accomplish.
I started to gain recognition from others. I became known as a girl who was good at basketball, not just as the girl who didn’t have hair. I was still bullied, but it began to bother me less because I had another distraction. I put all my time and energy into basketball and becoming the best player I could be.
In my senior year of college, I wanted to run the marathon in my town to check this athletic endeavor off my wish list. I barely trained and thought it was just running. I was wrong in countless ways.
I had no idea at the time that this 26.2-mile run would change my life and attitude in more ways than I could have imagined. During that run, something clicked inside me. I felt strong, fierce, and truly like Superwoman. I had never felt this way before, not even during the other sporting games I had played in. I will never forget the feeling of crossing the finish line, all the emotions I felt, and the way everyone celebrated me. I fell in love with the sport and knew I wanted to become a runner.
I began running marathons all over the country. The more I ran, the stronger and more confident I felt. I slowly started to talk about my hair to close friends and even went out walking without my wig.

Sometime in 1957, Annie, my grandma, had both her kids. My mom was her firstborn followed by my uncle soon after. Grandma decided to look for a brave business journey in coffee industry where no women held any position. She didn’t like the fact that Grandpa had to work for some other company to make a living. So she moved 100km away from where Grandpa used to live and bought a piece of land with 2 kids to support to start her own coffee farm.
As my mom and uncle grew and were school going in the nearby village, this brave woman, Annie, worked endlessly in the land planting one coffee plant after another. By the time my mom and uncle were in Grade 2, she had planted about 12 acres of coffee plants all alone.
This journey was not easy; Grandpa was home only on Saturdays and Sundays, when he had leave from work. Grandma barely slept through the nights from 1957 until 1963, guarding her land, her resources and children. At last, Grandpa gave up his job and came to support Grandma both emotionally and physically.
She realized she had created a large farm now and couldn’t just use herself and her kids to work to maintain and grow the land. So, by the time my mom and uncle were in Grade 5, Grandma decided the education in village school wasn’t good enough to her kids and sent them off to Mangalore to study and enjoy a town life with their cousins.
Sometime in 1965, Grandma decided to go shopping for labour. She picked up the workers’ families to work for the farm, often driving the tractor on her own every morning to bring labour to her farm before 7:30 am. As age caught on, it was difficult to pick up and drop workers every morning and every evening.
