文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要通过作者购书的经历比较了几个售书网站。

1 . My sister recently started a blog, and I wanted to gift her a book on writing — “Elements of Style”. There are many websites that sell books online in India, and I will list down the information about this book. My friend told me that Amazon.com sells this book for $7.00,which is Rs.350(350 卢比).Let’s see if I will get something close to that price or not.

1. Rediff Books. The first site I discovered was Rediff Books. I was able to find this book easily on this site, and there were three different choices of these. The top result was the hardcover(精装本),which was priced at Rs.2,831. They have the paperback edition(平装本) as well, which was priced at very reasonable Rs.191; only one problem— they would take 45 business days to ship!

2. NBC India. Next, I went to the site of NBC India, and found the book there too. They had a list price on the paperback edition of Rs.366, and the picture of the book was exactly like the one I have. The price and picture pleased me quite a bit, but the results page did not show me the shipping days.

3. Flip Kart. I have heard of Flip Kart before, but never actually used it. They had this book listed at Rs.175, and they said it would be shipped in 4-6 business days. This was a paperback edition that was printed in 2006, and it looked quite promising.

4.Amazon.com. Amazon.com can ship books to India. They charge another $3.00 for shipping one. They said that it can take anywhere from18 to 31 business days.

After going through the information, I felt that Flip Kart is the best one, and I went ahead and ordered the book. I hope it reaches within the stated time, and is in good condition.

1. If the author buys this book in A mazon.com, how much will she have to pay?
A.Rs.175B.Rs.350C.Rs.500D.Rs.700
2. Which website spends the longest time to ship the book according to the passage?
A.Rediff BooksB.NBC IndiaC.Flip KartD.Amazon.com
3. Why did the author consider Flip Kart as the best choice of all the websites?
A.Because the author has heard of Flip Kart before.
B.Because Flip Kart has the lowest price and the shortest ship time.
C.Because the book was printed in 2006, and it looked quite promising.
D.Because the book will arrive within the stated time, and is in good condition.

4 . Years ago, as a business reporter, I interviewed an advertising manager. I was there to ask about the latest campaign. But when I sat down, he wanted to talk about writing novels.

He spent hours meeting with clients(客户), but he dreamed of being a novelist instead. I remember thinking: Sure, everybody dreams to be a novelist. Who doesn’t?

A decade later, however, I was surprised to see the same person on TV, holding up his new book. James Patterson had developed into a best-selling author. He has since published more than 100 New York Times best sellers.

“I never thought of myself as an advertising person,” he told me when I asked how he’d done it. “I always planned to be a writer.” Mr. Patterson’s ability to sec himself as a writer shows a term(术语) “possible selves.” It describes how people envision their futures: what they may become, or want to become, etc.

The term, created in 1986 by the social psychologists Hazel Markus and Paula Nurius, grew out of research on self-concept and self-perception(自我知觉).While self-concepts, like “I am a kind person” or “I am a good parent”, are based on the present, the researchers found that people are also influenced by possible selves - what they might become in the future and how they might change.

These possible selves, both positive and negative, are closely related to motivation (动机).In a small study, when young adults were made to envision themselves as either regular exercisers (hoped-for selves) or inactive (feared selves),both groups exercised more in the weeks afterward. But researchers have found that imagining positive possible selves can improve health and reduce depression by holding out the hope for a better future.

A possible self can help you realize daydreams, which seem to be unrealistic, “if you build a bridge from your ‘now’ self to the possible self,” Dr. Markus said. But how do we build that bridge?

1. What was the author’s attitude towards James Patterson’s dream at first?
A.Doubtful.B.Curious.C.Worried.D.Disappointed.
2. What does the underlined word “envision” mean in the fourth paragraph?
A.Face.B.Imagine.C.Make.D.Determine.
3. What can we learn about “possible self” from paragraphs 5 and 6?
A.It is a necessity for a better future.
B.It refers to a person’s present behaviors.
C.Negative possible selves cannot inspire people.
D.Imagining positive possible selves can promote one’s health.
4. What will be talked about in the following paragraphs?
A.How a possible self can be of help.
B.How to connect “now” self and possible self.
C.What could be done to change one’s possible self.
D.What motivation is needed to have a positive self.

Does Takeaway Exist in Ancient China?

As early as in the Song Dynasty, “takeout” services were already available. In Zhang Zcduan's popular painting Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, there is a restaurant boy who has just come out of the shop with “to-go boxes” in his left hand and tableware (餐具) in his right, still     1     (wear) the shop apron and seeming to deliver the food somewhere. That image     2     (believe) to be a reflection of the original takeaway boy.

In ancient times, there were three ways to order food. The first is servant order. Send a family retainer (仆人) to go to a restaurant and make     3     order. When the food is ready, there is someone who     4     (particular) delivers the food to the customer's home, and then gets paid. The second is agreed delivery. Sign a long-term     5     (agree) with the restaurant. The store,    6    every agreed day, will pack the food well and send it to the customer's home. The last one is door-to-door selling. The sellers from restaurants sell the food door to door, especially in the entertainment places like theatres,    7     are crowded with many people.

The to-go box, wenpan (warm tray),     8     (consist) of two layers of porcelain. When     9     (use),   hot water is injected into the interlayer of the plate     10     (keep) the dishes warm. In this way, the dish is still warm when it arrives at the customer's home.

6 . Everybody seems to have a unique way to learn a language. However, we all come to the same result of speaking at most two languages fluently.     1     Unbelievable as it may sound, those polyglots (通晓多语言者) have a good command of more than two languages, some of whom even can speak eight or more kinds of languages.

You may wonder how they do that and what their secrets are. But the fact is that they simply love learning languages. The one thing they all have in common is that they just find ways to enjoy the language-learning process.     2

You may have seen their faces when they are showing their colorful grammar charts and their carefully handmade flash cards, and their statistics about learning vocabulary using apps or even how they love to cook based on recipes in a foreign language.     3     But they always make sure it’s something that they personally enjoy.

4     Polyglots simply found ways how to enjoy the process, how to turn language learning from a boring school subject into a pleasant activity which you don’t mind doing every day.

So if you’ve also tried to learn a language and you gave up, thinking it’s too difficult or you don’t have the language talent, give it another try.     5     Maybe you’re also just one method away from becoming a polyglot.

A.All of them use different methods.
B.No wonder they can get the hang of so many languages.
C.They are talking about language learning as if it is great fun.
D.Don’t be afraid that you may fail in the end and just try again.
E.Everyone is no talents and no one have shortcut to learning languages.
F.But actually there exists another kind of language learners called polyglot.
G.Maybe you’re just one enjoyable method away from learning that language fluently.

Once, my uncle brought home a cute little baby parrot. At first, I and my cousins were a little scared, because we didn’t know how to handle that little tender baby. My aunt eventually helped us out. She took it and kept it just as her baby. She fed it, she gave it occasional showers and eventually we became quite comfortable with it. Now there was another dilemma (困境) that we had — as we were not really aware of its gender (性别) we were unable to decide a name for the parrot. So finally my mom called it Mitthu. We agreed.

As it was growing, its wings started growing long, but my family was too possessive (占有欲强的) and caring towards Mitthu that they trimmed (修剪) its wings. They said if it flew, it wouldn’t be able to survive outside.

As time went by, we grew, so did Mitthu...It had by now started talking quite a lot...I was amazed by the way my aunt cared for it. She fed it anything and everything they had before eating. Mitthu was never kept in a cage from the beginning...it is still not kept in a eage... at first its wings were trimmed to protect it...but now as it has grown quite a lot, even its wings are not trimmed...

I sometimes wonder, it has the whole sky to fly, it is neither in a cage nor its wings are trimmed, then why isn’t it flying at all? Maybe it is now quite attached to us and doesn’t want to leave us, or maybe it doesn’t want to leave this comfortable life and go away and face the hard reality of life. The answer may be anything, depending on how we view the situation.

But as I grew older, I realized that the life of Mitthu is not really very different from that of mine. I was cared too and thus was protected from really getting along with outside world. I made my house my world, just as it was taught to me. I guess so did Mitthu. The comfort of my hope became, and I guess Mitthu’s as well, the invisible chain that never actually will let us fly.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the 9th of January, a day I will remember for a long time. It was a normal Sunday morning around 8:30 am, right on time for Sammy’s morning walk. I didn’t walk because of my lameness, so I rode in my power wheelchair. We got out the door and made our way toward a property near my apartment complex. We got to the gate and out of the complex, and we went left onto the extra wide sidewalk. It was about a mile’s walk one way , passing a firehouse on the right side of the road, before we turned around and started back.

Along the path we took was a large plate over the sidewalk. I passed over it the first time without any problems. My wheelchair could reach up to 8 miles per hour, but we went a little slower on our walks, around 2 miles per hour,   so Sammy could keep up. Even so, this speed was pretty fast for a 15-year-old dog.

As we turned around and made our way back, I went over the sidewalk plate again except that this time it was moved without me realizing it, putting my wheelchair in the grass on the embankment (路堤). The next thing I knew, my wheelchair started to tip over, throwing me out of the chair and rolling down the embankment into the muddy water below.

My right leg was hurt, and I was unable to pull myself upright. I was too weak to gather my strength to call for help. The muddy water was cold and I felt it hard to breathe with my body folded and twisted in a strange position. Meanwhile, Sammy was sitting up on the sidewalk with his leash (牵狗皮带) caught under the tipped over wheelchair. I heard him barking louder than ever heard. He knew I was hurt and was in danger.

By the way my wheelchair tipped over, a passerby on the street would not be able to see it from the road. All anyone could see was a dog barking on the sidewalk almost night across the street from the firehouse.
