文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章讲述了作者用急救知识救人的事件,从而引发了作者对于“每个人都应该掌握急救知识”的感慨并作了相关理由阐述。

1 . Last week when I was reading at home, my younger sister rushed in and told me an old man was lying on the ground in front of our house. I immediately took my first- aid kit and ran downstairs. He was suffering a slight heart attack. And I performed CPR on him. Luckily, an ambulance came soon and he was taken to the hospital. Later that day I was told by the hospital what I did helped rescue the old man’s life. I was happy to hear that.     1     There were many people who wanted to help around the old man then, yet no one gave him first aid as they hadn’t attended a first-aid course.

    2     Here are my reasons.

You can gain the knowledge, skills and confidence. You never know when you might need them—you could be at home, at work, at school or on holiday. If you have the skills, you can act whenever you’re needed.

3     For your family, your neighbours or the broader community, having more people with first-aid skills helps build a stronger and more harmonious community.

You can stay safe at work.     4     With first-aid knowledge you can create a safe work environment and help meet your workplace’s safety requirements.

It’s helpful in choosing your future career. The first-hand experience you gain through learning first aid and using your skills could help you decide if you want to pursue a career in the health profession.     5

A.I received a phone call from the hospital.
B.However, at the same time I felt a bit sad.
C.You can be a resource for your community.
D.Illness and injury can happen any time at any place.
E.You can take first-aid courses in your community for free.
F.I think everyone should learn at least some basic first-aid techniques, which can be very helpful.
G.It also shows your commitment to a career in the health profession when it comes to applying for jobs.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章强调了噎食的紧急处理措施的重要性,并介绍了Heimlich手法的操作方法。
2 . 语法填空

Seeing a fellow diner at the restaurant choking on some steak, Chen Wei rushed over     1     (offer) some help. By doing the Heimlich manoeuvre, the food was     2     (immediate) forced out and the victim began to breathe again.

The Heimlich manoeuvre,     3     was created by an American doctor, Henry Heimlich, in 1974, has saved many people’s lives since its creation because it is quick,     4     (practice) and easy to perform. You can do it as follows. First, stand behind the victim and wrap your     5     (arm) around his waist. Then make a fist with one hand and place     6     in the upper part of the victim’s stomach. Next, grab your fist with your other hand tightly and push up and into his stomach in one motion. Continue doing this until the obstruction     7     (force) out.

However,     8     (do) the Heimlich manoeuvre on a child is not recommended, as you may hurt him. Instead, lay     9     child face down on your lap with the head lower than the rest of his body and then slap him     10     the upper back firmly until he can breathe again.

3 . Build your own first aid kit

Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere, so being prepared for one is important. Having a proper first aid kit in your home is an easy but essential part of good emergency preparation.     1    . Instead of getting such one, you can save money and ensure the kit is personalized to suit you and your family’s particular needs by creating your own.

Pick a good container. One good option is a large, water resistant, rigid or flexible plastic container. This makes the materials inside visible for easy identification and safe.     2    . A handle is ideal out of consideration for that. Regardless of your container choice, clearly identify it, for example, by writing “ FIRST AID” with a permanent marker.

3    . One should include all of your basic medicinal supplies, such as bandages (绷带), gloves and scissors, while the second one includes medicine. Make sure that the important basic medical tools and medicines are contained in it.     4    . However, when it comes to bandages, wipes and other lightweight items, the more the merrier. And remember that everything is kept in small sealed plastic bags.

5    . When one of your family is crying about a cut on her finger, you don’t want your home kit buried at the back of a cupboard or lost because it’s not being returned to the same spot after each use. Establish a clearly-defined, consistent spot for it. Let small children know where the kit is located, but place it where they cannot reach it.

A.Make your first aid kit safely accessible
B.Separate the first aid kit into two sections
C.The ready-made first aid kits in the store are usually expensive
D.The kit should be easy to transport as needed to the emergency
E.The number of each item will depend on the size of your family
F.Having several first aid kits means you can get one of them anytime
G.First aid kits on the market often lack what you want or have something useless for you

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了培训心肺复苏术后,为了保持长期记忆,提出的一些方法。

4 . My friend James did some first-aid training last week to learn the fundamentals of the CPR. And he asked if I’d ever done the same.

“Yes,” I said, “…and no.”

Because, yes, I’ve attended several resuscitation (复苏) sessions over the years.     1     In fact, despite being shown all the key information at various points in my career, I don’t think I can remember any of it now.

What’s the problem? Every time I’ve had this type of training, it’s been a perfectly good opportunity to learn: an important topic, taught well, in a focused environment, with plenty to see, hear and do. I’ve always taken it seriously, too, and been focused. And I’ve always come away with a wealth of information.     2

Here’s what I should have done — and what you can do now — to make sure any training doesn’t go to waste.

3     You might be surprised to find that you’ve got some foundations of knowledge to build on. Pre-testing sparks your curiosity and puts you in a frame of mind to remember.

• Challenge your recall later.     4     If it’s hard to remember, but just about possible with effort, then that’s perfect. You need that little bit of struggle to start embedding (把……嵌入) information in your brain.

• Keep coming back. Put a note in your diary to test yourself again in a week, then ten days after that, then a month on…leaving longer gaps between checks.     5

Talking to James has inspired me to book myself onto yet another CPR course. But this time I’m determined to do it right. Remember that it’s the next day when the real training begins.

A.Test yourself before you start.
B.Wait a day, then see how much you still know.
C.Stay curious about what you are eager to know.
D.All the basic information has stuck in your mind.
E.But no, I don’t exactly feel “trained” to save lives.
F.Yet virtually nothing has ever made it to my longterm memory.
G.Use the questions you wrote on the day to keep challenging yourself.

7 . It was just a normal day for Ruth Miller, a 63-year-old woman until everything went horribly wrong. She was walking to her car after shopping when the unthinkable happened.

Right as she was unlocking her car, a man quickly came up behind her and tried to wrestle her purse away. She was in a state of shock. Luckily she remembered she had her Safe Personal Alarm (SPA) on her purse, and since she was too scared to scream for help, she quickly reached for the alarm and pulled the pin (保险栓). Immediately her SPA started just screaming. The man didn’t know what to do! He froze for a second, and then ran away like a bat out of hell!

SPA is a safety device capable of creating a 125 dB sound that attracts attention and scares away potential attackers. To compare, it’s the same volume as a military jet during take-off.

Paul Davidson, the inventor of SPA, knows all too well the type of situation that Ruth found herself in. But that’s not the only type of situation that SPA helps protect against. Parents can give it to their kids as an extra means of protection. Teenagers can use it so they can feel safe walking home. Women can know ifs there when they have to use the parking lot at night. “My mother, who is 76 years old, carries it around in case she falls and needs to ask people for help. I only wish I’d have thought of it earlier,” said Paul.

The police have been recommending SPA since it first hit the market. In fact, since its launch, SPA has been in a state, shifting between in stock and sold out nearly every other week, and it’s also got tons of loyal followers worldwide.

1. What does the underlined part “the unthinkable” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.An attempted robbery.B.A wrestling match.
C.An angry argument.D.A car accident.
2. How did Ruth react to the unexpected situation?
A.She fought violently.B.She froze in great fear.

3. Why does Paul mention his mother?

C.To show SPA can be widely used.D.To make an advertisement for SPA.
4. What can be learnt from the text?
A.SPA is well received in the market.B.People hesitate to pay for security.
