It was a very cold morning as it had been raining very heavily the previous night. As my mother was feeling a little uncomfortable, my sister volunteered to drive me to school. I overslept and as a result, was a bit late for school. We got into the car hurriedly. The roads were already jammed with traffic. It appeared that everyone was late as well.
My sister was a careful driver and despite the fact that I was late, she refused to drive fast on the slippery road. I was lucky she was such a determined and careful person because a few hundred meters away from the school, we witnessed an accident.
It all happened in an instant, as most accidents do. A car took a left turning without signaling and a school bus crashed into it heavily. A few cars behind the school bus hit the bus as they could not stop in time and soon it became a pile-up. The car was damaged badly while the school bus also had some damage. And the already crowded road became more jammed with vehicles, which came to a mess. We wanted to help the victims. My sister drove to a stop at the roadside not too far from the accident spot.
The scene that greeted us was terrible. I first rushed to the car. The driver, a lady, lay trapped behind the wheel, unable to move. Three schoolchildren were in the back seat, their faces white with fear. Two of them were seriously hurt and bleeding from the head and hands. They were conscious although too weak and frightened to realize what had happened. We called an ambulance and while waiting, we tried as much as possible to help the victims. As a result of our joint efforts, the driver and the children were moved to safety and taken care of.

2 . Climbers targeting peaks above 5,000 meters in the Tibet autonomous region, including the north side of Qomolangma, now have to apply for a permit, according to a rule issued by Chinese sports authorities.
To make climbing safer, or at least less deadly, the General Administration of Sport and the sports bureau of Tibet released a notification (通知) requiring climbers to send an application to the bureau at least a month in advance of their planned climb. It said climbing without permits will be strictly forbidden.
“In recent years, cases of injuries, missing people and deaths have been witnessed as a result of illegal climbing,” the notification said. “Climbing is a highly professional sport with high risk. Most illegal climbers lack professional skills, facilities and tour guides. Such activities will interfere with orderly climbing and bring risks, not only to the climbers themselves but also rescuers. They will also lead to a loss of personal or national property.”
Applications will need to detail each individual climber’s personal information, proposed climbing routes and related plans. Climbers are also being asked to obey related rules to protect mountain environments. The notification also urged regional government departments to strengthen safety checks and the prohibition of illegal climbing, encourage residents to join regular patrols near major climbing routes and promote public education on climbing safety.
In a previous interview with China Daily, Kul Bahadur Gurung, general secretary of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, said difficult weather conditions, lack of experience and support personnel, and the commercialization (商业化) of expeditions were the main reasons for the high death toll on the world’s highest peak. “Since the number of people reaching the summit of Everest is increasing, everyone thinks it is easier to climb and everyone can climb, which is a totally false idea,” he said.

3 . There is nothing more important than the safety of our children. Did you know that unintentional injury(意外伤害) is the main cause of death in children under 14 years old and with a third of them happening in the home? One of the top reasons a child under the age of three will visit an emergency room is because of household injuries and sadly, 70% of children who die from unintentional injuries are under the age of four. Every room in the home will have its own set of child safety problems. Two of the main danger zones are the kitchen and the bathroom.
Before I became a young mother, I crawled(爬) around the house on my hands and knees to see things from a child’s perspective(视角). You would be amazed at what you can discover by doing something so simple. We didn’t have toilet covers. A child is top heavy because their heads are bigger than their bodies and can easily fall into the toilet.
You might be surprised with the number of children falling out of windows every year, especially during the summer months. Something as simple as a child leaning against a window screen can result in a serious injury. The best way to prevent this type of injury is by setting up a child safety window guard.
As parents, we do the best we can by providing as much protection as possible to make sure of the safety of children. And as there are so many products(产品) out there to help us do this, there is nothing like good old-fashioned supervision(监护). So, use common sense and products that help to keep your child safe, and you will have provided a safe environment for your children.
1. What’s the main reason for death in children under 14 according to Paragraph 1?A.Age problems. | B.No sense of safety. |
C.Danger areas. | D.Unexpected injuries. |
A.To cover the toilet slowly. |

C.Growth speed of children. | D.Ways to look after children. |
4 . Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (心肺复苏术) is an important first aid skill to master and one that fewer and fewer people seem to take the time to learn these days. In fact, it only takes a few hours to get basic CPR training either in a classroom or online. Others may choose to get certified.
People pursue CPR certification for many reasons, in part because it can increase the chances of getting a job. CPR certification provides people a stronger sense of confidence in their skills. But certification is simply a card indicating that you have completed a CPR course. And it shouldn’t suggest that someone with basic CPR training but without certification is less qualified if faced with a potentially life-threatening situation. Therefore, it doesn’t matter whether you have a CPR card or not if someone has drowned or experienced cardiac arrest (心脏骤停). If you have been trained in CPR, with or without certification, you need to act.
Time is probably the main reason why people don’t obtain CPR training. But here’s the bottom line: CPR classes take only around two to three hours to complete, and many are conducted free of charge through organizations like the Red Cross. You can even take a free online CPR course if you can’t spare three hours in your week. Others shy away from things like mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. What many people fail to realize is that mouth-to-mouth is no longer a requirement for CPR and that chest compression (按压) is the focus of treatment until emergency medical services arrive.
By learning the facts about CPR training, you can make a choice about the options available to you. For more information, use the Red Cross CPR class locator and speak with an instructor near you. The best online training can be found through the National Safety Council’s first aid catalogue (目录).
1. What can we say about CPR certification?A.It takes a long time to obtain. |

One night the earth quaked, reducing the villages to ruins and causing hundreds of deaths.
It happened that I was away that night. I had gone to the town to buy my school books. I stayed the night at my uncle’s house. We spent the entire night outside.
I came back to my village. My uncle accompanied me. Every single house, every wall, every roof had been flattened. Our house was a two-storeyed stone building. My father had died of an illness, just fourteen months before. My mother took care of us. I was the oldest. My brother John was ten. Jane, my two-year-old sister, was the baby of the family.
When the soldiers began to clear the debris (废墟), my uncle led me away. “They have taken the bodies to the river bank,” he said gently. “Come, you must perform the last rites (仪式) to the dead before sunset. Tomorrow, we will go back to the town.”
I had last seen my family while leaving for the town. They stood at the doorway and waved. John and Jane. That is the way I will always remember them — smiling and waving at me.
Jane? She was not at the river bank. “They have not found her,” my uncle said. “She is dead…” “But we must find her,” I shouted. I ran back to the village, to the spot where my house had stood, searching, crying, searching on my knees…
“Boy, it is no use!” a voice said. I looked up. The speaker was the Army officer in charge of the relief operation. “Whom are you looking for?” “My sister,” I said, fighting to control my tears.
He looked dirty and exhausted as if he had not slept for days. “My men have been on their feet for days,” he said softly. “They have done all they could here. Tomorrow, at daybreak, we go to another village just like this, then another…”

7 . First aid means the aid or help that can be given to an injured person first before any other help. Usually the first thing we should do if a serious accident happens is to telephone for an ambulance, but sometimes quick actions by us may save someone’s life.
Shock: People often suffer from shock after receiving an injury. The face turns grey and the skin becomes damp and cold. They breathe quickly. They should be kept warm. Cover them with a blanket and give them a warm drink.
Broken Bones: Don’t move the person. Send for an ambulance at once.
Poison: A person who has swallowed poison should be taken to hospital at once. With some poisons, sleeping pills, for example, it is a good thing to make the person sick by pushing your fingers into his throat. But if he has swallowed some kind of acid, or anything that burns, it would be a bad thing to make the person sick by pushing your fingers into his throat. The poison would burn his throat as it came up. It is, therefore, best to find out what the person has taken so that you can call to tell the doctor.
Suffocation: This means not being able to breathe. For example, a drowning person will have his lungs full of water. Lay him down with his head lower than the rest of his body so that the water will drain out. If a person has something stuck in his throat, try to remove it with your fingers, or by hitting him on the back. When a person has stopped breathing because of drowning, electric shock, breathing in a poisonous gas etc., you can help him to begin breathing again.
Remember: When an accident happens, send someone to telephone for an ambulance at once. Keep the injured person warm and quiet. Give him plenty of air. Do not let other people crowd around him. If you see an injured person who is being looked after, keep away.

9 . There have been several incidents at some events in recent years where people died because of unsafe crowd conditions and stampedes. This may leave some people thinking there’s little you can do to survive a stampede. Indeed, it’s a frightening situation to be in and circumstances may make it impossible to escape.
Have a plan before you need one.
The key to staying safe in a crowd begins as soon as you arrive at the location
Go with the flow.
If there’s a sudden panic and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, you may fight back and push the opposite way.
Angle your way out.
Find somewhere to protect yourself.
Another potential way to handle the situation is to protect yourself and allow the crowd to move past you. Look for a solid structure to stand behind such as a pillar (柱子) or a wall. Other places to duck: behind a car or even a lamppost.
In many stampede events, people die from asphyxiation (窒息). But a possible way to avoid this is to place your arms in front of you, almost in a boxer-like stance (站立姿势). That could give you some very valuable breathing room — literally.
A.As you move forward with the crowd |
B.Don’t move straight |
C.But that could be a big mistake |
D.But it’s surprisingly effective and possibly life-saving |
E.Give yourself some breathing room |
