1 . 2022 Kids News Short Story competition

Kids News is starting its 2022 Kids News Short Story competition and wants to read all your wonderful stories. Kids News editor(编辑）Kamahl Cogdon encouraged all kids to enter and get all their creative stories down on paper.

"Last year we received almost 2,000 entries and the stories were great," Ms Cogdon said." We have some very creative young minds across Australia and we are looking forward to reading more of their fantastic stories this year."

How to enter

◎Entry to the competition is free for children from Kindergarten to Year 9 studying in an Australian school. One entry per person.

◎All entrants(参赛者）must get permission（许可）from their schools and parents before entering this competition.

◎Entrants can choose any topic they want.

◎Entries must be submitted（提交）through the online competition form located at www.kidsnews.com.au.

◎The competition starts at 9 am on Wednesday, May 11,2022,and ends at 5 pm on Sunday, July 3,2022.

Age categories:

Kindergarten to Year 2:entry must be between 250 and 750 words.

Years 3–4:entry must be between 250 and 750 words.

Years 5–6:entry must be between 500 and 1,000 words.

Years 7–9:entry must be between 500 and 1,000 words.

3 . Susan Brownell Anthony was a lady ahead of her time. She fought for women's rights long before they became a popular issue.

Susan was born on February 15,1820, in Adams, Massachusetts. At that time, women had few rights. They could not own property. Money earned by a married woman belonged to her husband. Major decisions regarding children were made by the fathers. Women could not vote.

At the age of 15, Susan became a school teacher. She taught for 15 years. Then she began organizing women's groups to promote causes that were important to women. She helped gain better educational rights for women. She helped give married women possession of their earnings.

After the Civil War, Susan became very involved in the women's suffrage movement. After years of lecturing, writing, and appealing by Susan and other women, some parts of the United States changed their laws to give women the right to vote. The first state was Wyoming in 1869. Other areas and states gradually followed Wyoming's decision. It was not until 1920 that the U.S Constitution was changed to give all women voting rights.

Susan Brownell Anthony died in 1906 at the age of 86.She was elected to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans in 1950.She was the first American woman to have a likeness(肖像) of her face on a coin. It was the 1979 Susan Brownell Anthony dollar.

4 . Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881—1973 ) was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. It was said that everything his brush touched turned to gold. But in truth, his works could be worth more than any precious metal. Picasso created more than 20,000 works in his life, including two of the world's 10 most expensive paintings.

Between 1907 and 1913, Picasso and his colleague Georges Braque started a revolution(革命) in painting. Before that, paintings were like windows—they were painted to look as if they had depth. You could tell which objects were "close" to you and which objects were "far away". But Picasso and Braque didn't want to paint like that any more. To them, a painting wasn't a window to the world; it was marks and lines on a flat surface. Why, they thought, should an object like a guitar be shown only from one angle (角度)? A guitar can look very different depending on which angle one looks at it from. Their answer was to show all the angles. They broke the guitar up into pieces. Their style of painting is called cubism (立体主义).

But why did they feel such a need to change things? Well, the world around them was changing, too. Science was turning people's ideas upside down. Albert Einstein's theory proved that what we knew about time and space was wrong. The world was becoming different; artists needed to start seeing and painting it differently.

The famous and terrifying painting Guernica (1937) shows a terrible scene during the Spanish Civil War. In the painting, you can actually see the sky falling. Picasso couldn't have painted it without the skills he learned during his cubist period. Breaking a guitar up into pieces was his preparation for showing the world being blown to pieces.
