1 . Recently I read an article written by Edan Lepucki and titled "Don't Play With Your Kids. Seriously." It makes a case for parents consciously withdrawing from their children ’s playtime until those children are able to play independently all the time.

According to Edan Lepucki, there are two main reasons. One is that it allows the child time and space to delve into wonderful imaginary worlds that he or she is not able to enter in quite the same way if a parent is present.

The second reason is that it gives parents a break. With everything else we do on a daily basis-feeding, cleaning, disciplining, educating, transporting, and more-it's simply too much to be expected to entertain our kids actively, as well. Lepucki describes a sense of exhaustion to which I can relate.

"The constant quarrelling was so exhausting that my husband and I didn't have the energy to play the way my son preferred. After I scolded him, I felt guilty and frustrated."

Adopting a no-play approach changed everything, improving both the relationship with her son and her own mental wellbeing, and it has done the same for me, with my own three children.

I have another reason for choosing this approach: It builds greater independence in children. Children play differently when adults are present. They tend to rely on adults to solve conflicts, whereas when they're on their own, they have no choice but to rise to the occasion and deal with any issue.

Lenore Skenazy, the author of "Free Range Kids", told me that when adults are present, kids act like kids, but when adults leave, kids become adults. She said, "If there's an adult there, they will take over. So adults need to step back."

Take this as your excuse to stop playing with your kids. Know that it' s perfectly OK to say no, to admit you need a break, and to encourage your children to play without you. Then sit back and observe the clever, imaginative little humans you've created at play. It's a most satisfying feeling.

1. What does the underlined part "delve into" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Develop.B.Change.C.Explore.D.Preserve.
2. How does Lepucki benefit from her parenting style?
A.Her relaxing time is increased.B.She becomes more independent.

3. Why is Lenore Skenazy mentioned?
A.To prove kids' poor independence.B.To provide evidence for an opinion.
C.To show kids' changeable character.D.To explain parents' bad effect on kids.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.It Provides Us with Many Benefits to Play Alone
B.Parents Should Help Develop Kids' Independence

D.It Won't Hurt Your Kids If You Stop Playing with Them

3 . Jerilee Melo has been teaching preschool for four years. When COVID-19 shut down her school, she began to wonder what her next Career move would be.

After several months, Melo decided to take a risk. She found a bus on Facebook Marketplace and purchased it in hopes of setting up her own teaching space.

Melo renovated (翻新) the bus and in August began teaching her first preschoolers, many of them her students in previous classrooms. To keep safe, Melo spread her class so that there were never more than five children on the bus with masks on.

Melo doesn’t move the bus during lessons, but parks it at a certain location and allows it to serve as a mobile classroom that utilizes the surroundings.

While her bus was renovated for teaching, Melo hadn’t been able to decorate it. In November she decided to enter a contest with Brittany Jeltema, a former teacher who now hosts giveaways for classroom makeovers (重新布置). Much to Melo’s surprise, Jeltema reached out telling her that she won.

“Jeri’s application stood out, because it was such an innovative approach to education,” Jeltema said.“Jeri submitted pictures of her bus before the makeover, and my brain lit up with ideas. I knew I could help create an engaging environment for her students.”

Over the course of a weekend, Jeltema and her team flew to Valencia, California, and transformed Melo’s mobile classroom into a 70’s style bus.

With her bus, Melo hopes to inspire other teachers to get creative during these unprecedented times.

“A lot of teachers are scared right now, because they feel they need to be in a classroom to educate. And they don’t,” Melo said. “I think teachers need to expand and go beyond the classroom, because what they have is valuable.”

4 . You can tell the man sitting next to you in the movie theater is a smoker, you can smell it on his clothes. But since he's not lighting up and smoking your way, it's OK, right? Not at all. A new study out of Yale University says thirdhand smoke is also dangerous.

Thirdhand “smoke” isn't actually smoke at all. It's the tobacco contaminants (烟草污染物) that stick to walls, bedding, carpet and even a smoker's body and clothes.

Science has known about the environmental pollution caused by smoking for years, leading to the creation of smoking and non-smoking rooms at hotels, restaurants and the like. But thirdhand smoke has also been found in environments that were not known to be polluted by smokers, leading researchers to ask how that could happen.

To find out, Professor Gentner and his students set up an experiment in a movie theater that had not allowed smoking for more than 15 years. They supplied fresh air into the theater, making sure no smoking or other pollutants entered it. Special equipment measured the elements in the air before and after moviegoers arrived.

The team saw a sharp increase in levels of dangerous chemicals. As people came into the theater, the concentrations (浓度) went up, and then dropped over time. But they didn't completely disappear after the audience left. In many cases, the lasting pollution was noticeable the following day in the empty theater. Pollution happened where smoking had never occurred. Even more worrying: the harm of it could equal that of smoking 10 cigarettes by the end of the movie.

“If future research has the same findings on thirdhand smoke, it means that smokers could potentially still do harm even if the act of smoking took place in a different space.” said Narula, a doctor who was not involved in the research. “And the only way to be free from thirdhand smoke is nothing short of banning (禁止) smoking everywhere.”

1. What do we know about thirdhand smoke?
A.It is the main factor of environmental pollution.
B.It causes much less harm than smoking cigarettes.
C.It's the remains of harmful chemicals from smoking.
D.It does not occur in an environment without smokers.
2. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4?
A.Add some background information.
B.Introduce the procedure of the experiment.
C.Provide some research data for the readers.
D.Make a summary of the previous paragraph.
3. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Concentrations.B.People.C.Levels.D.Dangerous chemicals.
4. What can we infer from what Narula said?
A.Smokers should keep away from non-smokers.
B.The harm of thirhand smoke remains to be proved.
C.Future research will hardly produce the same result.
D.There is no way to remove the harm of thirdhand smoke.

When she entered the restaurant, she was hit by the air of tension around the employees. Everybody was busy doing something or other and there was a mess around the restaurant. When she went in the back of the kitchen, she saw a tower of unwashed dishes.

Her father neared her in a hurry and asked her, “Vivian, thank goodness, you are here. Darling, will you please help us and do the dishes?" He patted her on her shoulder and left her to do the dishes.
