2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I looked over my grandma’s shoulder as she sewed pieces of cloth together. The two pieces became one faster than I’d imagined. The colors, however, looked ugly when put together and none of the patterns matched. All the patches (补丁) on this blanket seemed to disagree.

“Grandma, that’s the ugliest quilt (棉被) I’ve ever seen.”

“Oh, sweetie, it’s warm and beautiful,” said Grandma, pointing to a pile of crazy patterned shirts and suits.“I can take these old clothes that you and I will never wear again and turn them into something useful and good. It’s not the quilt’s appearance but the love that sews it together that makes it beautiful. This quilt will keep you warm on a cold night like tonight. And I know that for a fact.” Grandma put her hand on my shoulder, “Not everyone is as lucky as we are. Here, put on your coat. We’ll get a second opinion about how ugly my quilts are.”

Grandma folded a finished quilt and tucked it into a shopping bag. Afterwards, we got in the car and drove downtown. The white snow turned grayer as we got to the city. Eventually, Grandma stopped at a dark alley (胡同) and we got out of the car. The terrible smell of rotting garbage made me feel sick. Grandma took my hand and led me to the street lamp. I could see the snow shining in the light.

Grandma paused. “There’s usually somebody down this alley. It’s quiet and out of the wind—a good place to stay on cold nights. A nice warm quilt might make it even better.”

The dark swallowed Grandma and I as we stepped deep into the alley. The pavement was broken and missing in spots. Chicken bones and dirt y boxes littered their way. And Grandma’s shoes made a loud sound with each step. Feeling scared, I squeezed Grandma’s hand. Grandma squeezed my hand back. “It’s OK,” she smiled.

“Who’s there?” shouted a voice out of the darkness.

“I have a nice warm quilt, if you want it,” said Grandma. After a while, a lady walked out of the darkness. Grandma opened the shopping bag and pulled out the multicolored quilt. “That’s pretty and it looks warm,” the lady screamed and took the quilt, her eyes filled with tears of gratitude. As we left, I looked back and saw the lady holding the quilt tightly. “You’re right, Grandma. That is a beautiful quilt.” On our ride back home, the lady’s grateful words were still ringing in my ears.

4 . Gahriela worked for a multinational company as a successful project manager in Brazil. Later she was transferred to manage a team in Sweden. She was excited about her new role but soon realized that managing her new team would be a challenge.

Despite their friendliness, Gabriela didn’t feel respected as a leader. Her new staff would question her proposals openly in meetings, and when she gave them instructions on how to carry out a task, they would often go about is in their own way without checking with her. When she announced her decisions on the project, they would continue giving their opinions as if it was still up for discussion.

What Gabriela was experiencing was a culture shock in expectations. Dutch psychologist Geert Hofstede uses the concept of “power distance” to describe how power is distributed (分布) in different cultures. In her previous work environment, Gabriela was used to a high power distance culture where power is respected. In such a culture, leaders make the big decisions and are not often challenged. Her Swedish team, however, were used to working in a low power distance culture where employees often work together with their bosses to find solutions and make decisions. Here, leaders act as coaches who encourage independent thought and expect to be challenged.

When Gabriela became aware of the cultural differences between her and her team, she had an open conversation with them about their feelings about her leadership.

Pleased to be asked for their thoughts, Gabriela’s team openly expressed that they were not used to being told what to do. They enjoyed having more room for initiative and creative freedom. When she told her team exactly what she needed them to do, they felt that she didn’t trust them to do their job well.

With a better understanding of the underlying reasons behind each other’s behaviour, Gabriela was able to make adjustments to her management style. Finally, she effectively motivated her team to achieve their goals.

1. What problem did Gabriela have with her Swedish team at the beginning?
A.Her Swedish staff didn’t understand her instructions.
B.They were always refusing to follow her directions.
C.Her authority was challenged by her Swedish staff.
D.They looked down upon her because she was a female.
2. What is encouraged in the working culture in Sweden?
A.Independent thinking and mild character.B.Competitive spirit and mild character.
C.Professional spirit and risk-taking behavior.D.Active participation and creative thinking.
3. Which of the following can best describe Gabriela?
A.Bossy and rude.B.Flexible and communicative.
C.King but stubborn.D.Strict but trustworthy.
4. What can we learn from Gabriela’s story?
A.Two heads are better than one.B.When in Rome, do as Romans do.
C.Birds of a feather flock together.D.Don’t judge a book by its cover.

5 . My first shopping in a general store was in Miss Bee’s when I spent the summer with my grandmother in New York.

“Go get them yourself” Miss Bee said, ignoring the shopping list held up before her nose. “I’m not your servant, so just get yourself a basket from that pile over there and start filing.”

It took me three wall-to-wall searches before I found the first item on my list — a pork can be placed between boxes of cereal and bread. Next up was toilet paper, found under the daily newspaper, and Band-Ads, found next to the face cream. The store was a puzzle, but it held some surprises too. I found a new Superman comic behind the peanut butter.

I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week that summer. Sometimes she short-charged me. Other times she overcharged or sold me an old newspaper instead of a current one. Going to the store was more like going into battle. I left my Grandma’s house armed with my list — memorized to the letter — and marched into Miss Bee’s like General Patton (巴顿将军) marching into North Africa.

All summer long she found ways to trip me up. No sooner had I learned how to pronounce bicarbonate of soda (小苏打) and memorized its location on the shelf than Miss Bee rearranged the shelves and made me hunt for it all over again. By summer’s end, however, the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes.

The morning I was to return to Brooklyn, I stopped in to tell her that she was mean. To my amazement, she laughed and said. “Well, I don’t care! Each of us is put on this earth for a reason. I believe my job is to teach every child I meet some life lessons to help them. Think what you will, but when you get older you’ll be glad our paths crossed!

1. Why did the writer spend a long time doing her first shopping in the general store?

3. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 6 probably suggest?
A.The writer would benefit from the experience of shopping in Miss Bee’s.
B.The writer would find shopping in Miss Bee’s store very interesting.
C.The writer would be happy to meet Miss Bee again later in life.
D.The writer would realize that Miss Bee could become her friend.
4. What kind of person is Miss Bee according to the text?
A.Mean.B.Careless.C.Helpful.D.Humorous.

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章用作者使用手帕的故事来介绍手帕在新时代下的作用更新了。

6 . The text from my son said it all, “Dad, there’s an article you were born to write that the world is finally ready for: Bring Back the Handkerchief (手帕)!” As my son knows, there’s no “bring back” for me. For me, the handkerchief never left.

My mother raised me with several fixed rules. One was that a gentleman always has a clean handkerchief in his right rear pocket, a piece of simple cotton, roughly 15 inches square and less than four inches when folded. I was a dutiful son, but as a child, I had been wondering what it was there for. After 60 years, my body weight now feels wrong if I’m heading out of the house with an empty back pocket.

I am sure this habit has sometimes struck friends but in polite company nobody comments on somebody else’s business. Children like my kids think of my hankie ridiculously old-fashioned and they have their arguments. If you have to be prepared every day for allergies or a cold, why not choose a little packet of tissues (纸巾), which saves you from that disgusting business of blowing your nose in the thing and then stuffing it back in your pants?

I understand their point. But a handkerchief is more durable and has a far wider variety of uses. Can you grab the handle of a pot that’s boiling over with a Tempo tissue? Or do you recall the cases of skinned knees and drippy noses that hankie wiped? In fact, my wife gave me several new handkerchiefs as gifts. Neither of us can count the number of times she wiped her tears at a movie, or, as it happens, she’s needed to blow her nose.

Yet not even my mother could have predicted the hankie’s new role as an Essential Public Health Appliance. All of us have learnt how hard it is to follow advice from medical experts about not touching your face. Here is an answer. Use your hankie. In case of emergency, your handkerchief can become a makeshift DIY mask that can be pulled over your lower face like a robber entering a bank.

And it will certainly give me the chance to lift my chin and look at my adult children through one eye, asking in her good-hearted way, “What do you have to say now, smarty-pants?”

1. What kind of person is the author in the eye of his son?
A.His father is a born writer.
B.His father lost his handkerchief long ago.
C.His father will bring back the handkerchief.
D.His father has a habit of using handkerchief.
2. How do the younger generation like the handkerchief?
A.They like it very much.B.They regard it as fashionable.
C.They consider it inconvenient.D.They desire to have it someday.
3. What can be learned from the passage?
A.The function of handkerchiefs has been updated.
B.Handkerchiefs will be taken over by tissues sooner or later.
C.The author’s wife feels embarrassed to give him a handkerchief.
D.The author was made fun of by his friends for his use of handkerchiefs.
4. What’s the tone of the author in the passage?
A.Bossy.B.Humorous.C.Serious.D.Critical.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。个人品味在对气味的鉴赏中起着重要作用,它来自于从外部个体文化中习得的个人偏好。

8 . To the Sweden, there are few smells more attractive than surströmming, a kind of Swedish fermented fish. To most non-Sweden, however, there are probably few smells more awful — the fish has been described variously as smelling like sour cat litter, or even droppings-like. In determining which smells people find pleasant or not, surströmming suggests culture must play a sizeable part.

New research, however, suggests that might not be the case. Artin Arshamian, a neuroscientist at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and Asifa Majid, a psychologist at the University of Oxford, began with the expectation that culture would play an important role in determining pleasant smells. This was not just because of examples like that of surströmming. They knew from past experiments by other researchers that culture was important in determining which sorts of faces people found beautiful.

To study how smell and culture relate, the researchers presented ten smells. These smells varied from herb to isovaleric acid, the chemical responsible for smelly socks. More in-between smells, which the team thought might have different opinions, included octanoic acid; and octenol, an earthy smell found in many mushrooms. The cultures doing the smelling varied widely too, including hunters, farmers and city folk.

All 235 participants were asked to rank smells according to pleasantness. Contrary to previous belief, it was found that pleasantness rankings were remarkably consistent (一致的) regardless of where people came from. Isovaleric acid was hated by the vast majority, only eight giving it a score of l to 3 (1 was very pleasant and 10 was very unpleasant). On the other hand, more than 190 people gave herb a score of l to 3. Overall, the chemical composition of the smells explained 41 % of the reactions that participants had. In contrast, cultural upbringing accounted for just 6 %.

Even so, while culture didn’t shape perceptions (感知) of smells in the way that it shapes perceptions of faces, the researchers did find an “eye of the beholder” effect. Personal preference learned from the outside, as the researchers suggest, accounted for 54 % of the difference in which smells people liked.

1. What do we know about surströmming in the first paragraph?
A.It’s attractive to people around the world.

C.It plays an important role in different cultures.
D.Its popularity is mainly decided by culture.

C.Octanoic acid.D.Isovalericacid.
3. What plays a major role in the appreciation of smells?

C.Life experience.D.Chemical composition.
4. What message does the text communicate?
A.You are shaped by the smell you prefer.
B.Culture plays an important role in smells.
C.Smells are personal rather than cultural.
D.Perceptions of smells are the same as beauty.
