2 . Harry looked at the black alleyway. If only it would move, then he’d know whether it was just a stray cat or — something else. “Lumos,” Harry muttered, and a light appeared at the end of his wand (魔杖). He held it high over his head, and the pebble-dashed walls of number two suddenly sparkled; the garage door shone, and between them Harry saw, quite distinctly, the giant outline of something very big, with wide, gleaming eyes.
Harry stepped backward. His legs hit his trunk and he tripped. His wand flew out of his hand as he cast out an arm to break his fall, and he landed, hard, in the gutter (阴沟) — There was a deafening BANG, and Harry threw up his hands to shield his eyes against a sudden blinding light — With a yell, he rolled back onto the pavement, just in time. A second later, a gigantic pair of wheels and headlights screamed to a stop exactly where Harry had just been lying. They belonged, as Harry saw when he raised his head, to a triple-decker (三层), violently purple bus, which had appeared out of thin air. Gold lettering over the windshield spelled The Knight Bus.
For a second, Harry wondered if he had been knocked silly by his fall. Then a conductor in a purple uniform leapt out of the bus and began to speak loudly to the night.
“Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the isolated witch or wizard (巫师). Just stick out your wand hand, step on board, and we can take you anywhere you want to go. My name is Stan Shunpike, and I will be your conductor this eve —”
The conductor stopped suddenly. He had just caught sight of Harry, who was still sitting on the ground. Harry grabbed his wand again and struggled to his feet.

3 . Thanks to the pandemic, more people are or have been working from home. Multiple studies and surveys have shown that many would like to carry on doing so, even as the threat from COVID-19 fades. However, new research carried out in the USA suggests that in-person teams tend to perform better in creativity at certain tasks than those working through videoconferencing software.
The initial study involved 602 participants, including university students and staff. With half the pairs sitting face-to-face in one room, and half using videoconferencing software, subjects were asked to come up with novel uses for a product. The researchers found that the in-person teams generated a greater number and wider range of ideas than the virtual teams. But when it came to their ability to pick the ‘best’ idea rated by comparing the creativity scores of the ideas they chose with the scores of those picked by the judges, there was little difference between the two groups.
To make sure the study wasn’t specific to any given population group, the tests were then conducted again, with 1,490 engineers working for a large company from five other countries. For this second set of tests, participants were asked to come up with new product ideas for their real-life employer. Using a variety of methods, the researchers found that people in the in-person group looked around the room and talked with each other more, whereas those using videoconferencing software took it in turns to speak and kept their eyes on the screen. These things negatively connected to idea generation.
“This new research was an important first step. But this is a single study and the effects are somewhat small, amounting to a difference in one or two ideas between the groups. How much impact this has would depend on the company itself. ” said Dr. Jay Olson, who studies ways to measure creativity.

C.To arouse the creativity of the subjects. | D.To classify the participants of the study. |
A.Conducting more researches. | B.Treating the effects critically. |
C.Making full use of the findings. | D.Clarifying the results of the study. |
4 . NEW NATURE WRITER OF THE YEAR 2022
Seeking talented new faces in the world of nature writing in 2022, we set you a challenge: to write about a special place where you feel close to nature. Your many entries traveled from urban park to moorland (荒原); mountain to lake; coast to garden. Reading them was a thrilling reminder of the power of nature to comfort and heal, but also to energize and excite. Choosing a winner was difficult. Thank you to our judges for their thoughtful consideration. One entry stood out as the winner. Scarlet Ribbons is published on our web page. We hope you enjoy it.

6 . Your mind is very powerful. Yet, if you’re like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on the way you think. After all, who thinks about thinking?
If you draw wrong conclusions about whom you are and what you’re capable of doing, you’ll limit your potential. Your thoughts are a catalyst (催化剂) for self-perpetuating (自我持续的) cycles.
Once you draw a conclusion about yourself, you’re likely to do two things: look for evidence that strengthens your belief and consider anything that runs against your belief unimportant. Someone who develops the belief that he’s a failure, for example, will view each mistake as evidence that he’s not good enough.
A.When he does succeed, he’ll owe it to luck. |
B.Once that belief gets rooted in his mind, he will suffer a lot. |
C.That lack of efforts prevents her from having a better career. |
D.Creating a more positive thought can lead to better outcomes. |
E.What you think influences how you feel and how you behave. |
F.However, the way you think about yourself turns into your reality. |
G.If we make an effort on purpose, you can learn to think more positively. |
7 . Welcome to Greyhound Lines! Feel free to explore the bus features.
We want you to feel at home when you travel with us. So our buses have plenty of features to help you relax, like comfy leather seats and lots of legroom (plus free Wi-Fi, onboard entertainment and power outlets so you can still be an armchair surfer).
Free Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is free on all our buses, for all passengers. We see it as a must-have these days, not a premium(高级的) feature. So go ahead, check your emails or Instagram window scenery from the road (we’d love if you tag it). Please don’t stream video during your journey, though - we’ve all got to share the bandwidth(宽带)!
Personal Power Outlets
Nearly every seat has its own standard power outlet, so you can keep your devices charged all the way to your destination. Getting off with a fully charged phone is extra handy if you’re navigating around a new place.
Extra Legroom
When designing our new and updated buses, we actually removed a whole row of seats rather than trying to squeeze more in. So there’s always space to stretch out when you ride with Greyhound. (Our bus designers must have been really tall.)
Eco-friendly
Every Greyhound bus is fully equipped with the latest technology to burn fuel cleanly, reducing our impact on the environment. Check out the Going Green page for more of our eco-efforts, and techy facts on things like low-sulfur fuel.

The Nobel Prize for chemistry went to another trio, Carolyn R. Bertozzi from the U.S., Morten Meldal from Denmark and K. Barry Sharpless from the U.S. “for the development of click chemistry and biorthogonal chemistry,” the committee stated. Dr. Bertozzi is the eighth woman chemist to be awarded the prize, while Dr. Sharpless is the fifth scientist to be awarded two Nobel Prizes.
