When I was the child, my parents made me learn to play the piano. I have little time to play with my friends, that made me upset. I hated playing the piano at that time, just because   they forced me do it. Now looked back, I’m grateful to my parents for what he did for me. As a matter of fact, music has enriched my life. It gives me joy, comfort or confidence. I have come to understand why my parents were always pushing me hardly then. Everyone will experience pains, A little hard works and sweat will never hurt us. As the old saying goes to, no pains, no gains.

7 . According to a survey, in Washington, DC, only 69 percent of public school students graduate from high school on time. Many factors influence that low rate. One of the most important ones is whether the people around the students expect them to succeed.

So, for the past 40 years, a DC organization has stepped in to give around 10,000 students the support and positive environment they need to thrive. This organization, called Higher Achievement, provides students with a welcoming space, help with class work, and caring teachers. More than 95 percent of students who complete Higher Achievement graduate from high school on time.

Katherine Roboff is the group’s executive director in the DC area. She gives several reasons for the group’s success. One is timing. Higher Achievement does not work with students who are already in high school. It works with students in middle school. They start High Achievement at fifth or sixth grade—in US, that is usually age 11 or 12.

Robolf says research shows that if students are doing well academically in eighth grade—around age 13—they will have a greater chance of graduating from high school and going to college. In other words, what happens in middle school has a huge effect. The years between ages 10 and 13 may affect a student’s future more than anything                                        that happens academically in high school.

Roboff explains that students participate in Higher Achievement after school and during the summer, when public schools take a break of about two months. High Achievement students do homework, have community meetings, and work one-on-one with a mentor(导师).

The purpose of the program is to help them those after-school and summer hours to become better prepared academically and to develop their leadership skills and confidence so that by the time they get into eighth grade they are ready to get into some of the top high schools.”

A.Higher Achievement works with college students.
B.Many students have doubts about the organization.

A.they are certain to go to college
B.they are to succeed when they grow up
C.they are more likely to finish high school on time
D.they don’t need any help in their studies
3. Who are the working targets of Higher Achievement?
A.Those students in higher school.
B.Those students in middle school.
C.Those students who don’t work well.
D.Those students whose family can’t afford.

8 . On a farm in England, Gavin and Alice Munro are taking sustainability to the next level: they harvest trees which they grow into chairs.

The couple have a furniture(家具)farm in Derbyshire where they are growing 250 chairs, 100 lamps and 550 tables. It is their answer to what they see as the inefficient(无效率的)process of cutting down mature trees to create furniture.

"Instead of force-growing a tree for 50 years and then cutting it down and making it into smaller and smaller bits…the idea is to grow the tree into the shape that you want directly. It’s like a kind of 3D printing, "said Gavin.

Part of the inspiration for the idea came when Gavin was a young boy. He spotted an overgrown bonsai tree(盆栽) which looked like chair.

The 44-year-old began experimenting in 2006. In 2012, Gavin and Alice set up the company Full Grown. Within several years, the couple developed the most effective way to shape a tree without limiting its growth. They guided shoots(嫩枝)already heading in the right direction, rather than force them the wrong way against their natural growth.

The average chair takes six to nine years to grow-and another year to dry out. The labor and time involved in producing the organic pieces means they do not come cheap. Chairs sell for £10,000 each, lamps for £900 to £2,300 and tables for £2,500 to £12,500.

1. How could the couple grow trees into a shape they needed?
A.They used 3D printing.
B.They limited their growth.
C.They forced trees into different shapes.
D.They guided their shoots in the right direction.
2. When did Gavin get the idea of growing furniture?
A.When he was a child.B.When they got married.
C.When they bought the farm.D.When they began experimenting in 2006.
3. Which can best describe the furniture?
A.Big and eco-friendly.B.Natural but expensive.
C.Hand-made and creative.D.Traditional but organic.
4. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.A Couple Grow FurnitureB.Expensive Grown Chairs
C.It’s A Good Try Of SustainabilityD.Grown Trees Gain Popularity
