“My name is Jolene Johnson, but you can call me Jo-Jo. I am excited to be back in school. I have two new puppies, and you are all invited to see them after school!” Jolene announced to the 3rd grade class when it was her turn to introduce herself. Jolene knew she was outgoing and sometimes loud. With her bright red, curly hair and mismatched socks, Jo-Jo appeared a little intimidating (令人生怯的) to the shy kids. She couldn't help it! She loved school, her friends, and being the center of attention.
Mrs. Anderson, the teacher, smiled and thanked Jo-Jo for sharing. Mrs. Anderson then introduced a new kid named Dee Rogen. When he spoke, he was quiet and didn't say much. Jo-Jo thought she had seen him at breakfast. He had been sitting alone and not eating. Mrs. Anderson then partnered him with Ben for the day.
At lunchtime, Jo-Jo noticed that Dee was sitting with Ben and his friends but not talking to anyone. He looks lonely, thought Jo-Jo.
The next morning, Jo-Jo saw that Dee was by himself at breakfast again. She also saw Ben was sitting with his own group of friends. Jo-Jo didn't like anyone to feel alone. She noticed that Dee had a shirt on that said “I Paused My Game to be Here. ” Jo-Jo had an idea. She took her lunch tray (托盘) near Dee and said, “I like your shirt. What games do you play?” Dee smiled and said his favorite was Minecraft. Jo-Jo loved that game! They spent the lunch break talking about the best ways to survive in the game by finding materials to build with and ways to find food. Ducking creatures was Dee's favorite part, especially the dragon.
On Friday, Jo-Jo announced that she was having Minecraft Monday at her house after school and everyone in her 3rd grade class was invited. At break, Jo-Jo pulled out a sign-up sheet from her backpack and several students ran up to her.

8 . Recent developments in robotics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have brought us in the eye of the storm of a new automation age. About half of the work carried out by people was likely to be automated by 2055 with adaption to technology, a McKinsey Global Institute report predicted.
Automation can enable businesses to improve performance by reducing errors and improving quality and speed, and in some cases achieving outcomes that go beyond human capabilities. At a time of weak productivity growth worldwide, automation technologies can provide the much-needed promotion of economic growth, according to the report. Automation could raise productivity growth globally by 0.8 percent to 1.4 percent. At a global level, technically automated activities involved 1.1 billion employees and 11.9 trillion U.S. dollars in wages, the report said.
The report also showed that activities most influenced by automation were physical ones in highly structured and predictable environments, as well as data collection and processing. In the United States, these activities make up 51 percent of activities in the economy, accounting for almost 2.7 trillion dollars in wages. They are most common in production, accommodation and food service, and the retail (零售) trade. And it’s not just low-skill, low-wage work that is likely to be influenced by automation; middle-skill and high-paying, high-skill occupations, too, have a degree of automation potential.
The robots and computers not only can perform a range of routine physical work activities better and more cheaply than humans, but are also increasingly capable of accomplishing activities that require cognitive (认知的) capabilities, such as feeling emotions or driving.
While much of the current debate about automation has focused on the potential that many people may be replaced and therefore lose their financial resources, the analysis shows that humans will still be needed: The total productivity gains will only come about if people work alongside machines.

10 . We often think about relationships on a scale from positive to negative. We are drawn to loving family members, caring classmates and supportive mentors. We do our best to avoid the cruel uncle, the playground bully and the jerk boss.
But the most toxic relationships aren’t the purely negative ones. They’re the ones that are a mix of positive and negative. We often call them frenemies, friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you. But it’s not just friends. It’s the in-laws who volunteer to watch your kids but belittle your parenting style. The manager who praises your work but denies you a promotion.
Everyone knows how relationships like that can tie your stomach into a knot. But groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt-Lunstad shows that ambivalent (矛盾情绪的) relationships can be damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships.
I had assumed that with a neighbor or a colleague, having some positive interactions was better than all negative interactions. But being cheered on by the same person who cuts you down doesn’t reduce the bad feelings; it increases them. And it’s not just in your head: It leaves a trace in your heart and your blood.
Even a single ambivalent interaction can cause harm. In one experiment, people gave speeches on controversial topics in front of a friend who offered feedback. The researchers had randomly assigned the friend to give ambivalent or negative comments. Receiving mixed feedback caused higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved to be more upsetting than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.”
The evidence that ambivalent relationships can be bad for us is strong, but the reasons can be harder to read — just like the relationships themselves.
The most recognized reason is that ambivalent relationships are unpredictable. With a clear enemy, you put up a shield when you cross paths. With a frenemy, you never know whether the helpful or the harmful is going to show up. Feeling unsure can disrupt the body’s calming system and activate a fight-or-flight response. It’s unsettling to hope for a hug while also preparing for a likely quarrel.
Another factor is that unpleasant interactions are more painful in an ambivalent relationship. It’s more upsetting to be let down by people you like sometimes than by people you dislike all the time. When someone hates you in the back, it hurts more if he’s been friendly to your face.
1. Which of the following can be counted as a frenemy?A.Your neighbor’s kid who advises you to study hard but idles away his own time. |
B.Your classmate who admires your diligence at first, but doubts your intelligence later. |
C.Y our friend who encourages you to spend more time on study but less on smart phones. |
D.Your cousin who proposes you to do balance homework and sleep. |
A.devalue | B.appreciate | C.respect | D.abuse |
A.Ambivalent relationships have a permanent effect on your well-being. |
B.The common cause for high blood pressure is ambivalent relationship. |
C.Ambivalent interactions will be more painful if it is done on purpose. |
D.The negative impact of ambivalent interactions is damaging. |
