2 . Blake Mycoskie is a businessman. He set up his first business when he was still at college. Three more businesses later, still only 29 years old and feeling a little burned out from work, Mycoskie decided to take a break for a while, and headed down to Argentina for some rest and relaxation.
But rest isn't really part of a businessman's make-up, and it wasn't long before Mycoskie had hit on another idea, one that would come to define him as perhaps the world's best-known social businessman.
On a visit to a village, he was shocked to see that many of the children didn't have any shoes? or if they did, the shoes were badly worn. Since shoes-particularly the local farmers canvas (帆布) shoe, the alpargata — are relatively cheap in Argentina, Mycoskie's first idea was to set up a charity to donate shoes to the children. But after giving it some thought, he realized that this probably wouldn't work: the shoes would quickly wear out, and if he asked people to donate repeatedly every time more shoes were needed, their sympathy for the cause might also soon wear out.
So he came up with the idea of TOMS: One for One shoes. He would take the alpargata to America, produce it, and sell it as a high-end fashion item at around $50 a pair. Quite a lot for a canvas shoe you might say, but for each pair he sold, another pair would be donated to village children. That way he could guarantee a continuing supply and also run the project as a business rather than as a charity.
His plan was carried out and soon his product was getting high satisfaction ratings from customers.Ten years on and with revenues of $392 million a year, the business is developing, supplying shoes not only to children in Argentina but also other parts of the world.
But is the one-for-one model repeatable with other products? TOMS is a for-profit business but for a long time it didn't show a profit. Now he is conscious that "giving" alone is not the answer, and that educating people to improve their own lives is the real key. Yet he still loves TOMS: One for One,calling it his "greatest hit." And why shouldn't he? It has made a difference to millions of poor children around the world and brought him great satisfaction.

5 . For millions of Facebook users, choosing which photo to use for an online profile is an important decision. According to a study by researchers at the UT Dallas Center, the photos we select may reflect individual preferences, but they also appear to reflect more deeply rooted, unconscious cultural differences. Previous research has shown that culture can affect not only language and custom, but also how we experience the world and process information. Western cultures, for example, condition people to think of themselves as highly independent entities(实体), whereas East Asian cultures stress collectivism and interdependence.
Dr. Denise Park, co-director of the Center at UT Dallas, and former graduate student Dr. Chih-Mao Huang of the University of Illinois, were curious about whether these patterns of cultural influence extend to cyberspace. In a paper published in the International Journal of Psychology, they examined the profile photographs of more than 500 active Facebook users from the United States and East Asia. Overall, they found that profile photos of Americans are more likely to focus on the individual’s face, while the profiles of East Asians tend to less emphasize the face and include more background features. Americans also show greater smile intensity compared to East Asian Facebook users.
The findings show marked cultural differences in the focus of attention among East Asian and American Facebook users. Moreover, they echo previous research on cultural influences on visual perception (感知), attention, and reasoning in the offline world.
“We believe these findings relate to a cultural bias to be more individualistic and independent in the US and more communal and interdependent in Asia,” said Park.
The research also found that cultural influences over our self-presentation online can shift over time and from place to place. In one of the study samples, Americans studying in Japan and Japanese studying in the United States both showed a tendency to adjust their profile photos to the general preferences of their host country.
“Facebook constitutes an extended social context in which personal profiles mirror various individual characteristics, private thoughts, and social behaviors,” noted Huang. “As such, the study presents a new approach to investigate cognition and behaviors across cultures by using Facebook as a data collection platform.”

9 . A Teenage Inventor
The world could be one step closer to quick and inexpensive Ebola detection thanks to a teenager from Connecticut.
Olivia Hallisey, a junior at Greenwich High School, was awarded $50,000 in the Google Science Fair for her new method that detects Ebola, a virus that causes bleeding from different parts of the body and usually causes death. Olivia’s method is to ask patients to put their saliva (唾液) onto a testing card. The card changes color if the person is catching Ebloa. Present Ebloa tests take up to 12 hours and cost $1,000. Olivia’s method, however, can be done just in 30 minutes for about $25. Besides, the sample (样本) doesn’t have to be put in a refrigerator thanks to the silk material Olivia uses to produce the testing cards.
Olivia was inspired to deal with this global problem after watching the news that more than 10,000 people died from Ebola in West Africa. She was particularly worried about the fact that, while the acts of involvement can improve survival rates, present detection methods are costly, time-consuming and require complex tools. Olivia got help from her science research teacher. She drew out directions from past research, and figured out detection systems that have proven to work with other diseases, including Lyme disease and yellow fever.
“What affects one country affects everyone,”Olivia told CNBC. “We have to work together to find answers to the huge challenges which cause harm to the global health.” The Connecticut’s teen, who hopes to become a doctor one day, was named the Google Science Fair winner in the competition of 20 competitors from across the globe. The fair is open to young people between the ages of 13 and 18 in most countries.
Olivia hopes her success will inspire other girls interested in science and computers. “I would just encourage girls to try it in the beginning, and remind them that they don’t have to feel naturally drawn or feel like they have a special talent for maths or science,” she told CNBC, “but just really look at something they are interested in and then think how to improve something or make it more enjoyable or relate it to their interests.”
