2 . 阅读下面的短文和问题,根据短文内容,在相应题号后的横线上写下相关信息,完成对该问题的回答。

Rounding the corner into the classroom to pick up my daughter, I heard the teacher tell her, "You've done the most beautiful tree. Well done." A few days later, she pointed to another of my daughter's drawings and said, "Wow, you really are an artist!"

Both times, when I heard my daughter being praised, I felt at a loss. As a mother, how could I explain to the teacher that I would prefer it if she didn't praise my daughter?

Nowadays, we give a lot of praise to our children. Praise, self-confidence and performance at school, it is commonly believed, rise and fall together. But the present research shows something else—over the past decade, a number of studies on self-confidence have suggested that praising a child as "clever" may not help her at school. In fact, it might cause her to underperform. Often a child will react to praise by quitting—why make a new drawing if you have already made "the best"? Or a child may simply repeat the same work—why draw something new, or in a new way, if the old way always gets praise?

In a now famous 1998 study of children aged 10 and 11, psychologists Carol Dweck and Claudia Mueller asked 128 children to solve a series of math problems. After completing the first set of simple exercises, the researchers gave each child just one sentence of praise. Some were praised for their intelligence—"You did really well, you're so clever"; others for their hard work—"You did really well, you must have worked really hard." Then the researchers had the children try a more challenging set of problems. The results were eye-opening. The students who were praised for their effort showed a greater willingness to work out new methods. They said they failed because of a lack of (缺少) effort, not a lack of intelligence. The children who had been praised for their cleverness worried more about failure and tended to choose tasks that they had done before. All in all, the excitement created by being told "You're so clever" gave way to an increase in anxiety and a drop in self-confidence and performance. When asked by the researchers to write to the children in another school, remembering their experience, some of the "clever" children lied about their scores. In short, all it took to knock these youngsters' confidence, to make them so unhappy that they lied, was one sentence of praise.

1. How did the author feel when she heard her daughter being praised? (不多于 5 个单词)
2. What have studies on self-confidence suggested? (不多于 11 个单词)
3. According to the study, what followed the children's excitement when they were praised for cleverness? (不多于 11 个单词)

4 . Susan Casado felt well prepared to have a birthday party of 15 to 20 guests for her son, Shemy, who celebrated his fourth birthday on Saturday. But after none of the boy's friends arrived, she never expected she'd be hosting nearly 100 surprise guests at her home.

Susan tells Yahoo Lifestyle that she was disappointed when her brother was the only person to show up at the party at first. After seeing that she had tears in her eyes, however, Shemy's uncle connected with a local Facebook group to call for more people to join the celebration. Moments later, a woman arrived at Susan's home asking for the birthday boy, although the family had never met her before.

As people continued to arrive, the mother realized that her brother had something to do with it, and was then shown a Facebook post that he made to advertise the party.

After more unexpected guests continued to arrive, however, Susan began to worry about the amount of food that she had prepared. "I felt so embarrassed," she explains. But guests didn't care about the food and drinks. Instead, they told the birthday boy's mother that they were there to "make Shemy's day", which even got better once the guests of honor arrived from St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

Susan went on to explain that although Shemy has Down syndrome and isn't able to say much, he does express his happiness with laughter and hugs. "He hugs when he feels happy, so when people came in to meet him, we took pictures together and he hugged them. This is the way that he says thank you."

When Susan asked her brother why he went through the extra effort to make sure that his nephew's party was amazing. She says that he told her, "He should have a good birthday." As for the firefighters, who attended, they told the family that it's all part of the job. 5 . Thousands of years ago, New Year’s Eve fell on October 31, and in some European countries, like Ireland, it was a special day for the sun god. To celebrate the coming of a new year and to scare ghosts away, people would get together and wear scary costumes (装束).

Most Europeans followed this old tradition even after they became Christians in 312 AD. As Christian practices became more and more important in most European cultures, Europeans began to see the importance in holding a special day for saints (圣人). Saints are Christians who have died but are still given special respect. Each saint is given a special day, so that Christians can celebrate the saint’s life every year.

In 609 AD, the number of saints had grown too large for each of them to have a special day on the calendar, so the church set a day, May 13, to celebrate every saint's life. It was called “All Saints’ Day”. In 835 AD, this day was moved to November 1. Later, October 31 was named “Halloween” in Ireland. This word means “the evening before the day for all saints”. It was about this time that people began going to church on both Halloween and All Saints' Day.

Today, most people don’t know much about All Saints’ Day or the history of Halloween. However, the old tradition of dressing up in scary costumes has been kept to this very day, which makes Halloween a fun evening for children.

1. New Year's Eve used to be celebrated on _____.
A.October 31B.December 25C.May 13D.November 1
2. How did All Saints’ Day first begin?
A.Many saints in Europe, wanted such a holiday.
B.Christian rules required this kind of celebration.
C.There were too many saints to celebrate one by one.
D.Children didn't have any kind of holiday for themselves.
3. The word “Halloween” refers to _____.
A.the scary costumes people wear on All Saints’ Day
B.the evening before the day for all saints
C.a tradition in European countries
D.a special day for the sun god

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容完成对该问题的回答。

Madeline’s family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule:no phones allowed for the entire week. “No distractions(使人分心的事) , ”they said.

“But my friends will be expecting updates,” Madeline said.

“They’ll have to wait,” her mom said and opened a drawer. Madeline saw that her parents’ phones were already in it. Madeline had to drop her phone in, too.

The drive to the beach house took most of the day. That night after dinner, Madeline came into the kitchen, where her father was washing dishes.

“Still hungry?” he asked.

“No,” she answered. “Couldn’t I have my phone back?”

“Can’t,” he said. “It’s not here. Remember? Check out the bookcase in the living room. Might find something you like.”

She walked into the living room and saw a jigsaw puzzle(拼图玩具)on the bookcase. She took it, put the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.

After what seemed like minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o'clock. She had been working for almost two hours! The puzzle was less than half done.

The next morning, a golden sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The view was wonderful. Madeline’s hand shot to the beside table, but there was nothing there.

That evening, Madeline lost herself in the jigsaw puzzle again. She felt a little excited every time the shapes met. Soon, the puzzle was complete.

She stepped back to enjoy the finished puzzle. The picture showed an old painting of several farmhands working in a brown field and there was a giant rainbow arching across the sky.

Madeline enjoyed the puzzle for a few minutes, trying to keep the image in her mind. Then, she quietly started taking it apart. That, she thought, was just for me.

1. What’s the new rule for Madeline’s family vacation?
2. How did Madeline feel about the new rule at first?
3. How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
4. Do you think your smartphone is a distraction while traveling? Why or why not? (about 40 words)

7 . If we look around us at the things we have bought at some point in our lives, we would no doubt notice that not everything we own is being put to good use:the thick woolen coat which we thought looked fashionable despite the fact that we live in a tropical(热带的) country, the smartphone that got put away when we bought ourselves the newest model, or even the guest room in our house that somehow got turned into a storeroom.

Those underutilized things may seem useless to some, but could be useful to others. With the coming of the Internet, online communities have figured out a way to generate profit from the sharing of those underused things. Using websites and social media groups that facilitate(促进) the buying and selling of second-hand goods, it is now easier than ever for sharing activities to take place. And this is known as the sharing economy.

These online platforms are providing a chance for people to make a quick buck or two. To give an example, busy parents e previously might not have bothered with setting up a stall(货摊) at the local market or car boot sale to sell their children's old stuff, but with online marketplaces, parents are now able to sell on those hardly worn baby clothes that their children have outgrown and the expensive pushchairs and baby stuff they have bought, so as to put some cash back into their pockets.

Businesses have also caught on to the profitability of the sharing economy and are seeking to gain from making use of those underutilized resources. A business model that has rapidly risen in popularity sees companies providing an online platform that puts customers in contact with those who can provide a particular product or service. Companies like Airbnb act as a middleman for people to cash in on their unused rooms and houses and let them out as profitable accommodation (住所). Another example is Uber, encourages people to use their own personal cars as taxis to make some extra cash in their free time.

This move towards a sharing economy is not without criticisms. Unlike businesses, unregulated individuals do not to follow certain rules and this can lead to poorer and inconsistent quality od goods and services and a higher risk of cheating. Nevertheless, in the consumerist society we live in today, the increased opportunities to sell on our unwanted and underused goods can lead to a lesser impact on environment.

1. What does the underlined word “underutilized” in Paragraph 2 probably mean____.
A.Not being fashionable.B.Used.
C.Not being used enough.D.Worn out.
2. According to the author, which of the following is something that we might under use?
A.The latest smartphone.
B.The storeroom in our house.
C.A thick coat in a cold country.
D.Clothes our babies don't or can't wear anymore.
3. It might be a problem for unregulated individuals to sell to others because________.
A.they have to follow certain rules
B.they like to criticize their buyers
C.they don't have a business permit
D.they might sell lower-quality products
4. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A.The Consumerist Society
B.Parents Who Need Money
C.The Rise of the Sharing Economy
D.Why We Buy Things We Don’t Need

10 . Learning to say “yes, and”

When I first heard about the improvisation (即兴交流) class, I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl, I feared improvising in front of strangers. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like a perfect chance to learn how to speak and communicate with others effectively. I signed up, knowing the experience would give me help.

During our first class, we learned an important concept of improvisation: “yes, and.” It means that, as improvisers, we’d better accept what fellow performers say. If someone says that rhinos (犀牛) are librarians, for example, then rhinos are librarians. We do not question the logic; we say “yes” and then continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong.

The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable and even started to enjoy our classes. I became better at listening, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the moment. Once when I was giving a presentation about my science, an audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t grow out of the information I’d presented. Instead of getting confused and nervous, I took the “yes, and” approach—accepting the question and letting my mind focus on why it was asked. That helped me find an appropriate answer. I got pretty excited about it.

The benefits of improvisation go beyond communication. Before attending the class, I would get stuck when my experiments produced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But now, instead of getting discouraged, I will stay open to the possibility that the results are real, keep exploring the data and end up identifying a new type of cell—one that isn’t behaving as expected.

I think all scientists can benefit from this lesson. If the data say rhinos are librarians, then it’s worth finding out whether rhinos are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, our job isn’t to challenge data that support, a preconceived story, but to say “yes, and.”

1. Why did the author attend the improvisation class?
A.To get a different experience.
B.To finish her Ph.D. at university.
C.To give up her job as a science communicator.
D.To improve her speaking and communicating ability.
2. What was the author’s change after attending the improvisation class?
A.She formed her own idea quickly.
B.She came up with lots of creative responses.
C.She paid more attention to the logic of answers.
D.She became a good listener before giving an opinion.
3. The author mentions applying the “yes, and” approach to her scientific experiments to ________.
A.explain the process of using the method
B.prove the benefits of the improvisation class
C.share her own research experiences with readers
D.attract fellow scientists to attend the improvisation class
4. What can be inferred about scientists from the last paragraph?
A.They should attend the improvisation class.
B.They should question all preconceived ideas.
C.They should carry on research by admitting earlier data.
D.They should try to improve their academic knowledge.
