1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Helen was putting her dress on. It was a bit small, but she could manage.

She would be getting the rent with her father, Mr. Resnick, today. Helen didn’t often get to spend time with her father these days. He was always working, and always trying to make enough money to support the family. The rent was what kept them going during the Depression (经济大萧条). When Helen worried about her too-tight dress, other children had to worry about food or even their homes.

The houses were not far, and three families lived there. Everything went smoothly at the first two apartments, but both Helen and her father were worried about the third. The Katz family never had enough money, and it had become harder and harder to accept their rent, even though her father had lowered it.

Mrs. Katz opened the door when Helen’s father knocked. “Her eyes were red—from crying,” Helen thought. “Good afternoon, Mr. Resnick,” she said, hands nervously smoothing her gray dress.

“How are you, Mrs. Katz?” he asked.

“We’re. we’re getting by (勉强度日),” she said, but she wouldn’t meet his eyes or even Helen’s. “You’re here for the rent.”

“Yes, Mrs. Katz, I’m afraid so.”

“Please come in.”

Inside of the apartment, Mr. Katz and the two children were sitting at a table, waiting for Mr. Resnick. “They all have such thin faces!” Helen thought. She was embarrassed, suddenly, by her own round cheeks and strong body.

Mrs. Katz gave Helen’s father the money. He thanked her and turned to go.

“Mr. Resnick?” Mrs. Katz said before they could leave. He turned to look at her. In a shaking voice she told him, “We haven’t eaten in two days.”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was the beginning of spring and Lucy was in the backyard with her grandchild, Jack. Jack was playing soccer when Lucy asked, “I'm going to start planting my garden. Do you want to help me?”

“What are you going to plant, Granny?” asked Jack. “I like big, yellow sunflowers.”

“I'm going to plant vegetables. That way we can have them to eat when they are ready,” Lucy replied.

“How long does that take?” asked Jack. He sometimes liked vegetables, especially carrots.

“It will take a few months before anything is ready to eat, ”Lucy answered. Jack was surprised.

“Months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?” Jack said. “You should just go to the store and buy them.”

“Be patient, my dear! Don't you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself?” Lucy said. “And if you come to help, it won't be too much work.”

“I’ll help you, Granny, ”offered Jack. He put down the soccer and went to look at the gardening tools Lucy had prepared.

Lucy taught Jack how to use a trowel (铲) to dig small rows for the seeds. Then, Lucy showed Jack how to place the seeds into each hole and how to cover the holes with soil. Lastly, Jack wrote the names of the vegetables on sticks that Lucy pushed into the ground. “This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we planted, ”Lucy explained.

Once everything was planted, Jack filled the watering can so that Lucy could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow.

“Now we just water them a little bit every day, and with time and sunlight, we'll have delicious things to eat in the summer, ”Lucy said. They had never been so excited for summer before.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was sitting down in the examining room chair, annoyed that my mom had even scheduled the appointment when the doctor arrived and dove right in to the basic small talk about my health history. But then he threw in a question that shocked me, “So Robin, what are you going to do after high school?”

What was I going to do after high school? Was he kidding me? “don’t know,” I mumbled (嘟囔). I was seventeen. I didn’t have any idea what I was going to do after high school. My high school guidance teacher told me in certain terms that I wasn’t “college material” and I believed her. My grades were far from satisfactory. Education wasn’t exactly emphasized in my family.

“You don’t know? Well, why don’t you go to college to become a doctor like me?” He smiled as he glanced at his watch. Go to college to become a doctor? Who was this man kidding? I thought he was crazy for even suggesting it. No one in my family had even graduated from college, let alone become a doctor. And I wasn’t college material. “I’m not smart enough to be a doctor. ”

Hearing this, the doctor immediately turned toward me. He looked at me straight in the eyes when he very seriously said, “Let me tell you something: you don’t have to be smart to be a doctor. You just have to be persistent.” Then he turned around to gather his things and rushed off to his next appointment. I never saw him again.

1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jeremy was born with a twisted body and a slow mind. At the age of 12 he was still in second grade, seemingly unable to learn. His teacher, Doris Miller, often became extremely angry with him. He would squirm (来回扭动) in his seat and make a lot of noises. At other times, he spoke clearly and distinctly. Most of the time, however, Jeremy just annoyed his teacher.

One day Doris called his parents and asked them to come in for a talk. As the Forresters entered the empty classroom, Doris said to them, “Jeremy really belongs to a special school. It isn’t fair to him to be with younger children who don’t have learning problems.”

Mrs. Forrester cried softly into a tissue, while her husband spoke. “Miss Miller,” he said, “there is no school of that kind nearby. It would be a terrible shock for Jeremy if we had to take him out of this school. We know he really likes it here.” Doris sat for a long time after they had left, staring at the snow outside the window. Its coldness seemed to flow into her soul. She wanted to sympathize with the Forresters. After all, their only child had a serious illness. But it wasn’t fair to keep him in her class. She had 18 other youngsters to teach, and Jeremy was a distraction.

As she thought over the situation, guilt washed over her. Here I am complaining when my problems are nothing compared to that poor family, she thought. From that day on, she tried hard to ignore Jeremy’s noises and his blank stares.

Spring came, and the children talked excitedly about the coming of Easter. Doris told them the story of Jesus (耶稣), and then to highlight the idea of new life, she gave each of the children a large plastic egg. “Now, I want you to take this home and bring it back tomorrow with something inside that shows new life. Do you understand?”

“Yes. Miss Miller,” the children responded enthusiastically — all except for Jeremy. He listened carefully; his eyes never left her face. He did not even make his usual nose.

The next morning, 19 children placed their eggs in the large basket on Miss Miller’s desk.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In 1940, I worked in the checkroom of the railway station. I saw everybody that came up the stairs.

Harry was a young man who came to the station and waited at the head of the stairs for the passengers from the 9:05 train.

I remembered seeing Harry that first evening. He wasn’t much more than a thin, anxious kid then. He was all dressed up and I knew he was meeting his sister, who he hadn’t seen for many years.

Well, the passengers came up and I had to get busy. I didn’t look toward the stairs again until nearly time for the 9:18 and I was very surprised to see that the Harry was still there. His sister didn’t come on the 9:18 either, nor on the 9:40, and when the passengers from the 10:02 had all arrived and left, Harry was looking pretty upset. Pretty soon he came close to my window so I called out and asked him what his sister looked like.

“She’s small and dark. She is nineteen years old and very neat in the way she walk,” he said. “She has a face that has lots of spirit. I mean she can get mad but she never stays mad for long, and her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. She’s got a brown fur, but maybe she isn’t wearing it.”

“I couldn’t remember seeing anybody like that,” I told him.

He showed me the telegram he’d received: ARRIVE THURSDAY. MEET ME AT THE STATION. MAY. It was from Omaha, Nebraska. “Well,” I finally said, “why don’t you phone to your home? She’s probably called there if she got in ahead of you.”

He gave me a sick look. “I’ve only been in the town for two days. We were going to meet and then drive down to the south of the city where I’ve got a job. She doesn’t have my address.”

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了四川省三星堆遗址的科学家们继续挖掘出500多件3000多年前的中国古代文明遗迹。

6 . Scientists at the Sanxingdui Ruins in southwest China’s Sichuan Province continue to unearth over 500 relics from an ancient Chinese civilization that dates back over 3,000 years.

The findings unearthed in June include a fully preserved gold mask, which stands at 37. 2cm wide and16. 5cm tall. The new gold mask reminded people of the one found in March, which was far more damaged. Scientists said the gold mask is the largest, and most well preserved, of similar golden relics discovered at the Sanxingdui Ruins, and it is consistent with the idea that gold was important to people of the area called the Shu state.

The gold mask has similar facial features to bronze statues discovered in the area. It has large eyes covering much of the face, a big nose, huge ears and a flat, wide mouth. The strange facial features led some people to suggest they were aliens. However, Wang Wei, the director of the Institute of Archaeology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, explained, “There is no chance that Sanxingdui belongs to an alien civilization. These wide-eyed masks look strange because the makers wanted to copy the look of deities (神灵). They shouldn’t be considered as the look of everyday people.”

Besides the mask, other discoveries included bronze statues, a knife made out of jade and a series of relics made of ivory, among many others. Many of the bronze relics are brand new discoveries and unique to anything found before in China. Chinese scientists said they are highly detailed, with statues showing facial features that fit well with the gold mask, which make them as valuable resources for the research of ancient Shu and give better perceptiveness about the ancient Shu state, home to a mysterious civilization until the recent discoveries proved its existence. Chinese scientists believe they are entering a “key stage” and expect to find a series of relics that will change how people think about ancient China.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Outside the back of the supermarket, an elderly lady stood in the cold holding a basket of flowers. “Would you like some flowers? They cost $3 a bunch,” she asked me when I was walking past and I politely responded, “No, thank you.” Then I walked away and went inside the supermarket.

I walked around the supermarket searching for the things I needed. I couldn’t help thinking of that lady standing in the cold holding her basket of flowers. I wondered about her unknown story of standing in the cold with her basket.

Then I had my own personal struggles. As a poor blogger (博主), I had to budget for everything and even $3 was a lot for me and probably for her too. But it wasn’t my first thought when she asked me about buying her flowers. My first thought was that I didn’t have the cash but not as an excuse. I’d not carried cash with me for a few years.

When I went to the checkout counter to pay with my card, I asked for $3 cash out. With a sigh of relief, I was glad that the staff member handed me $3. I walked away and I found the lady around the corner of the supermarket.

“Sorry, I didn’t have cash on me just now. But I’d like to buy some of your flowers.”

As I had a closer look in her basket I saw the bunch of flowers I had admired briefly during our first encounter. I also saw two small pots of plants that were beautiful and healthy. Although I didn’t have a green thumb, I loved them deeply. She told me their names and some details about them. I chose the bunch of flowers I had first sighted. I gave her $3 as she handed me the flowers. She said thank you to me.

I was sharing an interesting story with my best friend Alisa and turned around in the dining room. Suddenly, I heard the sound of glass breaking.

When I looked down at the floor, it was filled with pieces of colorful glass. Alisa said. “Oh, no, not the vase.”

“Why? What did I do?” My face turned red.

“Lucy, that glass vase was what my uncle brought from China when they came to England,” Alisa said nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the room, I would have gladly said I did it. But this time you’d better tell my daddy that it was your fault, and he’s going to be really crazy.”

I was terrified. I’d broken a priceless family vase. Why did I turn around like that?

We collected the glass pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be repaired, but Alisa said gently it was impossible.

Alisa said her daddy would be home by seven. My head was in blank. Would her daddy shout at me or punish me? Would he tell me I couldn’t play with Alisa any more? I couldn’t stop thinking for a thousand results in my mind. However, the only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry.”

My name is Linh. I am a woman with physical disability. Whenever asked about my diability, my answer remains the same: “I was born with a disability on my right leg. That’s all to it.” In fact, no disability can define me. I want to define the person I am by what I do — I am an advocate (倡导者) for people with disabilities.

My parents were right when they managed to bring me up in an environment where I was always among friends without disabilities. This made me think, “I am different from my friends, but that doesn’t mean I can’t do what they can. I can do things in my own way.”

Having been in an inclusive (包容的) education system. I can see both opportunities and barriers it brings 10 personal development for girls with disabilities. With this experience. In the end. when the heart called — I chose to follow my dream.

The reason was simple. I was not confident that I would find a job upon graduation, but I held a strong belief that I would never be happy doing what I was told to do. I am and will be the only person responsible for my life.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital (音乐演奏会) was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.

My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing thing into something worthwhile. “You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there who do not have families to visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.”

I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only could I play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.

My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming including many old classics.

When the exciting day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.

Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.
