1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A Four-legged Guardian Angel

Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job, and now our financial situation was depressing. Finally, I had put the home on the market. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane (大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could bear.

Deep in discouragement, I sat typing up my application letters. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my thirteen-month-old son, Forrest, as he lay on the carpet, playing near our big, gentle Brigitte. It seemed as if Brigitte was always meant to be in this family and she turned out to be a perfect companion.

Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived.   I ran to the door but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.

Thinking of these, I couldn’t help sighing and went straight back to work. However, I hadn’t typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking and running back and forth to the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.

I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realized Forrest was nowhere to be seen.   In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一组科学家正在致力于把大气中的CO₂转化为喷气燃料。

3 . In the coming decade, space agencies and private space companies like SpaceX are planning to build a base on the Moon and Mars. While scientists are already building rockets for the journey, for long-term human settlements on them, astronauts will need fuel to carry out daily tasks. Many have suggested hydrogen (氢). But a group of scientists is working on turning CO2 in the atmosphere into jet fuel. As Mars is rich in CO2 and the lunar surface has a high concentration of CO2, it may be a feasible solution.

For now the team of scientists at the University of Oxford is focusing on making jet fuel for the aviation (航空) industry. As the aviation industry releases over 900 million tons of CO2 every year, to battle climate change, it is necessary to turn the tide. So far aviation scientists have tried to use other energy resources like electricity to fly. But such flights are limited to short distances. For long-distance flights, there is no alternative yet.

The concept of turning CO2 into jet fuel is not new. Previously, other similar methods had to rely on expensive catalysts (催化剂) like cobalt to speed up the chemical reaction. But what Oxford scientists suggest is adding a cheap iron-based catalyst and hydrogen to turn CO2 into liquid fuel. As the process would not require using fossil fuel, it will make the industry carbon neutral (碳中和的).

The scientists tested the new catalyst in a lab at 300°C and at 10 times the air pressure at sea level. The entire process took 20 hours and turned 38 percent of CO2 into new chemicals. About 48 percent of the chemicals were jet fuel hydrocarbon and the rest were other by-products that are used in the production of plastic.

Professor Peter Edwards, a lead scientist in the project, said the new method could be improved in two to three years to produce jet fuel in large quantities. “This is a really exciting, potentially revolutionary advance. Our vision is that the world can see that CO2 collected can be used as an energy carrier to enable sustainable aviation.”

1. Which word can best explain “feasible” underlined in paragraph 1?
A.Unique.B.Practical.C.Time-tested.D.Quick.
2. What problem does the aviation industry face?
A.It is suffering from a serious fuel shortage.
B.The traditional jet fuel is much too expensive.
C.Climate change partly disturbs long-distance flights.
D.Its alternative energy resources are not powerful enough.
3. What do we know about the Oxford scientists’ method of fuel-making?
A.It is green and cost-saving.
B.It is complex and time-consuming.
C.It runs tests in natural environment.
D.It starts with immediate chemical reaction.
4. What’s the purpose of the author?
A.To attract people to explore the space.
B.To inform us of a breakthrough in fuel research.
C.To warn us the dangers of climate change.
D.To encourage us to work in the aviation industry.

Drones (无人机) play an important role in farming this spring. “Using drones to spread the nutrient solution (营养液) is a lot safer than doing it manually (手动地),” Shi Zhenhai, a farmer in Henan who is responsible for about 119 hectares of wheat fields said. Shi added that the flying machines greatly improved efficiency. Sensors collect information about the plants, such as the humidity (湿度) of the environment, the condition of sunlight and heat, and whether the room is ventilated (通风) enough. It is then uploaded to a platform to be analyzed. The correct levels of water and fertilizer are supplied to crops by the automatic irrigation system, Robots and other devices are used to pick and transport tomatoes.

With facilities to store heat, the structure does not use huge amounts of energy in winter, unlike traditional greenhouses. “Growing crops in a controlled environment enables farmers to produce high-quality plants, maintain high food safety standards, and avoid the use of pesticides,” Wang Haiguang at the operations office of the greenhouse said.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要论述了私人身份和公众身份之间的区别以及以Richard Rodriguez为例,说明了他对公众身份的看法。

10 . Private identity is related to a person’s identity where he cannot describe his feeling publicly and has difficulties in expressing his ideas and thoughts or socializing with others. It is like being introverted (内向的) in front of the public. And public identity is related to somewhat expressing one’s feeling perfectly in front of the public. There are many factors for a person to be publicly introverted, which includes different languages and cultures.

Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez written by Richard Rodriguez reflects his development from a disadvantaged son of Mexican immigrants living in northern California into a well-educated person. Rodriguez strongly believes that for accessing the privileges of public life, people must learn how to be assimilated into public society and depress their private identity. He argues that developing a public identity is directly related to maturing into adulthood.

Rodriguez states how he started his school life, from knowing only 50 words to becoming a publicly recognized professor and author. He argues that everyone deserves to speak in a public voice and feel belonging in a public society. But to gain this, one should make sacrifices to the expectations of society. This includes loss of private identity, because when a person starts spending more time acting and speaking in public, he starts to live a life with reduced intimacy (亲密).

Rodriguez accepts these facts because he remembers the feeling of closeness to his family as a child and how it started fading when he started living a public life. Rodriguez also argues that the school should be a place to build a child’s public identity rather than developing his private identity he has formed at home. He believes that one of the purposes of education is to develop children’s ability to speak in a public language, which is a crucial step in their development.

1. How does the author start the text?
A.By offering reasons.B.By giving examples.
C.By giving definitions.D.By expressing opinions.
2. Which can replace the underlined word “assimilated” in paragraph 2?
A.absorbedB.dividedC.researchedD.looked
3. What is Rodriguez’s attitude to public identity?
A.Uncertain.B.Positive.C.Unfriendly.D.Cautious.
4. What may Rodriguez agree with according to the text?
A.It’s difficult to have both intimacy and public identity.
B.Schools have a duty to develop children’s private identity.
C.Having the feeling of closeness to family is unnecessary.
D.Developing children’s ability to speak is the goal of education.
