I visited Mountain Dragon with several classmate today. We arrived at the foot of Mountain Dragon on half past nine and spend nearly one hour in climbing. We could see flowers and grass all the way up and the air in the mountain smelt very freshly. We did not feel tiring at all. When we got to the top, and we were all wet with sweat. We sat under a tall tree to have rest, drinking some water and eating anything. There were several temples in the mountain. Monks (僧侣) in a temple was singing. We watched for a longer time because we had never seen this before. It was really a beautiful mountain.
2 . Jane Goodall is a famous animal behaviorist and has spent many years observing the behavior of chimps in their native habitat. Jane Goodall was born on April 3rd, 1934 in London, England. Her childhood dream was to spend time with animals in the wild. In particular, she was drawn to Africa and the dream of seeing wild animals in their native habitat. It was an unusual dream for a girl at the time, but her parents said to her, “We know it’s different, but we are at your back.”
In 1956, Jane jumped at the opportunity to travel to a friend’s farm in Kenya. It was there that Jane met the famous anthropologist, Dr. Louis S.B. Leakey. Leakey was impressed with Jane’s passion and knowledge of Africa and wildlife.
In 1960, Leakey and Jane began an important study of wild chimps by Lake Tanganyika. The chimps showed some fascinating habits to the group. These included meat eating, which is completely different from the previous opinion about chimps. Also, Jane saw chimps making tools to catch insects. This was an important discovery because, at the time, it was assumed only humans made tools.
The study of chimps in their native habitat was a significant event, leading to many new observations. Jane’s first article My life among wild chimpanzees was published in National Geographic in 1963. Some aspects of the study were challenged. For example, some feared her decision to feed the animals might have distorted their behavior and made them more aggressive (好斗的).
In 1977, Jane set up the Jane Goodall Institute which promotes plans to look after chimps and their environment. The institute has many networks and programs all over the world.

The Spring Festival, that falls on the first day of the first lunar month, is one of the most important festival. I’m very interesting in it, so I went to China last year to experience some traditions and customs. Usually, people decorate our houses with paper-cuttings and New Year paintings. Beside, people often have a big dinner with their family members in New Year’s Eve. For children, the most exciting moment is if when they get red pockets from the elders. Set off fireworks is also very exciting.
What unforgettable experience! I really enjoy myself.

5 . A do-it yourself device could help to unlock the next generation of solar energy, including advanced technology for space missions. Dr Jamie Laird, a research fellow at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science, has invented a new device for testing the shortcomings of perovskite (钙钛矿) solar cells, the first of its kind anywhere in the world.
Perovskite solar cells that can match silicon (硅) for efficiency are cheaper to manufacture and more flexible, but they haven’t become commercially available yet, because they are still too unstable when exposed to heat, light and oxygen. That’s where Jamie’s device comes in. With a combination of a microscope and a special laser (激光器),it produces pictures and maps of the drawbacks within solar cells and tells scientists where the cells are losing power or efficiency over time and use. It also provides data to indicate why.
The innovative technique starting life as a personal project for Jamie was originally intended to analyse minerals. When he joined Exciton Science, Jamie realized his device would be a perfect tool to help his colleagues and other leading solar cell researchers around the world to better understand the frustrating issues that have kept perovskite from meeting their exciting promise.
“We use a laser beam and we focus on a spot and scan across the device to measure the quality of the solar cell. This new method allows us to do imaging analysis of the whole or complete solar cells and look at how they perform, how they change with time and aging, and how good a solar cell it is,” Jamie said.
“You can’t have a solar cell that decomposes quickly when it’s meant to last 20 years in the field,” Jamie added.“This is a missing link in the whole of techniques we have to throw at that problem.”
1. What is the shortcoming of perovskite solar cells?A.It’s very expensive. | B.Its efficiency is low. |
C.Its production is complex. | D.It’s unstable under certain conditions. |

6 . Christmas 2020 was shaping up to be a heartbreaker for Melanie Lee. A few weeks earlier, her 33-year-old son had lost his battle with a long illness. Then her car stopped working. She had no means of paying for it to be fixed.
“When it broke down, so did I,” Lee said.“Now I don’t have my baby and now I don’t have transportation. How am I supposed to stay active in my grandchildren’s lives?”
Middleton, 38, the owner of a barbecue restaurant and former auto mechanic (修理工) who, in his free time, repairs and gives away used-cars. He’d heard about Lee’s situation from her nephew McClary, the mayor of Andrews, South Carolina. On Christmas morning, Middleton showed up unannounced at Lee’s home with a gift: a white 1993 Oldsmobile.
“I had no idea what was going on,” said Lee. “ He handed me the keys and didn’t ask for anything.”Once again, she’s able to pick up her granddaughters from school and take them to dance class.“I got my freedom back.”
The idea for the used-car giveaway came to Middleton a year earlier during a food drive he’d organized. Many of those who’d lined up for a meal walked up to four miles to get there because they didn’t have cars.
Cars are a lifeline in this part of South Carolina. There’s no public transportation and no taxis to get people around. So he offered to trade his restaurant’s specialty for broken- down vehicles. Since then, friends and strangers have dropped off more than 100 cars in various states of disrepair. Many sit in Middleton’s yard waiting to be repaired and donated, usually to those he’s heard about through word of mouth. It’s a list of names that grows daily.
“People think Middleton is a good and kind man,” Mayor McClary said. “And I do too.”

9 . 71 years after starting college, a 90-year-old woman, Joyce Viola DeFauw, was graduating this year. She first entered college in 1951, studying early education, and later, home economics. She left school after three and a half years due to marriage.
The mom of nine, who is now also a grandmother to 17 and great-grandmother to 26, was busy through the years but never forgot about college.“I must have told the children that I wish I had finished back in the 1950s,” DeFauw recalled. “They suggested that I go back and I thought ‘Well, OK.’” Since the pandemic began in 2019, instead of walking to campus to attend classes, she did so behind a computer screen from her retirement home.“I needed a computer and they got one for me and so I’ve been able to use it and enjoy it.”
DeFauw re-entered Northern Illinois University (NIU) in August 2019 and began to take online courses toward a bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in general studies. Although there were times when she struggled with the courses and even thought about giving up, DeFauw kept doing schoolwork almost every day. “We get to exchange ideas and things through the computer and I’ve had wonderful instructors that guided me,” DeFauw said. “As far as the encouragement of everyone — my friends, my family and my teachers — I just can’t give up.”
Three years later, she put on the cap and gown and received a Bachelor of General Studies degree from the university. DeFauw felt very happy and thankful for being able to achieve her big milestone. NIU President Dr. Lisa Freeman praised DeFauw as an “inspiration” to others. “DeFauw is a pioneer and now a Northern Illinois University graduate,” Freeman said. “She has beautifully shown that earning a degree is never late at any age. For anyone still looking to realize your dreams, just go for it. There’s so much that life offers, and you will miss out on if you don’t take advantage of it.”
