文章大意:本文属于说明文。一种新的紫色番茄在美国获得批准种植和销售。科学家通过改变这种番茄的DNA,增加了它们的抗氧化剂,使这种番茄可以保存更久,并有助于人们的健康。

1 . Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, a British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).

Antioxidants, also known as AOS, are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.

A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO. After adding two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon, Martin soon found her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like. We need to see more experiments about it.

GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.

Even so, many people still have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.

Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.

1. What makes purple tomatoes really special?
A.Their medical value.B.Their delicious flavor.
C.Their proper size.D.Their pleasant color.
2. What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice?
A.Supportive.B.Doubtful.C.Concerned.D.Opposed.
3. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The environment affects GMO foods.
B.The customers do not like GMO foods.
C.GMO products are used to help farmers.
D.Scientists think GMO products are safe.
4. What’s mainly talked about in the text?
A.Different DNA can benefit plant growth.
B.Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.
C.Scientists are changing DNA of crops.
D.Human health depends on changed DNA.

2 . Amazing Benefits of Listening to Music

If you love listening to music, you’re in good company. Recent research shows that listening to music improves our mental and physical health.     1

Music makes you happier.

When you listen to music, your brain produces a special substance called dopamine (多巴胺). It causes listeners to feel emotions like happiness, excitement and joy. So next time you need an emotional increase, listen to your favorite tunes for 15 minutes.

Music lowers stress and improves health.

2     This is an important finding since stress causes many illnesses. To stay calm and healthy during a stressful day, turn on the radio.

Music reduces depression.

More than 350 million people suffer from depression around the world. Music can benefit depressive patients, depending on the type of music.     3     But techno and heavy metal brings people down even more. When you feel low, put on some classical or relaxing music to increase positive moods.

    4

Softening the lighting and music can lead people to eat fewer calories and enjoy their meals better. If you’re looking for ways to reduce your appetite (食欲), try dimming the lights and listening to soft music next time you sit down for a meal.

Music raises IQ and school performance.

Taking music lessons predicts higher school performance and IQ in young children. In one study, children who took singing lessons had learned better than children who took other lessons unrelated to music. If you want to help your children achieve excellence in their studies, you can let them take music lessons.     5

A.Music helps you eat less.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究显示,美国大多数的教育工作者和学生都认为数字技术对他们的教学和学习有很大的价值。

3 . Technology is widely available to students in classrooms across the United States, a new study shows. Nearly nine in ten U. S. public school students say they use digital learning (数字化学习) tools at least a few days a week. And more than half of those who were questioned said they used digital technology to learn.

In the new survey, digital learning tools means technology. It includes websites, application software programs, and online classes, games, videos and programs. The survey found that classroom technology gets high marks from educators. At least eight in ten teachers and school leaders say they see great value in using classroom technology tools now and in the future.

When it comes to preparing students for future careers (职业), the study found that educators are likely to say technology is more effective than non-digital tools for connecting learning to students’ careers.

Derek Kelley of Virginia agrees. He manages technology for Fairfax County Public Schools, which serves nearly 200,000 students. He said, “The important thing is to help prepare the students for real world experience and knowledge about technology is something students need.”

In the report, more than half of the special education teachers questioned said technology could help their students. Tony Daniel, a special education teacher, agrees with that. He teaches children with learning difficulties at the Springfield Estates Elementary School in Springfield, Virginia.

Nearly all pupils say digital learning tools are fun. Most say the technology helps them learn things on their own and at their own speed.

Almost three-fourths of secondary students say the technology tools help them learn things on their own. Over 50% said they make school more interesting. 42% would like to use it more often at school, and only 8% said they would like to use them less. One thing everyone agrees on is that technology is here to stay in American classrooms.

1. What do educators think of technology according to paragraph 3?
A.It saves a lot of learning time for students.
B.It mixes education with career more effectively.
C.It offers much fun to students in learning process.
D.It makes teachers and students communicate more easily.
2. What can digital learning tools do for pupils?
A.Offer them high marks.B.Force them to learn at home.
C.Speed up their physical growth.D.Help them learn with their own steps.
3. What are the figures (数字) in the last paragraph about?
A.Students of different grades.B.The advantages of technology.
C.Students’ views on technology.D.The development of technology.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Technology Will Replace Traditional Teaching
B.Technology Completely Changed Our Society

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,研究发现教室里为座位安排对学生的表现有很大影响。
4 .

Where in the classroom do you prefer to sit, and why? Scientists have discovered that seating preference not only shows students’ personalities, but has a great influence on their school performance. Generally speaking, students show different attitudes depending on where they sit. Based on the research, scientists have developed a funnel-like (像漏斗的) model of “learning zones (区域)” to see the relationship between seating and active learning.

In this model, the mouth of the funnel (A) is the best position for learning. Students in this front area prove to be the most active learners. They show a greater desire (渴求) for learning, which leads them to focus better and take a more active part than the rest of the class. Those in the neck of the funnel (B) don’t pay the same close attention, but they ask a lot of questions, partly because of the added confidence they feel from being in a safe zone, with others around them. Less desirable is the area “outside the funnel (C, D)”, which refers to the side and the back rows, where students take a less active part in classroom activities-and find it hard to focus their attention, falling asleep at times.

Studies about learning zones suggest that a change in traditional seating plans can benefit students. In fact, a growing number of teachers have begun less traditional seating plans, such as “U-Type”. There are no side and back areas, so teachers can expect their students to take part in activities more actively and increase student-teacher interaction (互动).

1. According to scientists, what influences students’ learning greatly?
A.The time of class.B.Seating positions.
C.The number of students.D.The size of the classroom.
2. Which is the most proper area for learning?
A.Area A.B.Area B.C.Area C.D.Area D.
3. What advantage do the students sitting in Area B over those in Area C&D?
A.Sometimes fall asleep.B.Feel safe and confident.
C.Seldom ask their teachers questions.D.Try to avoid looking directly at the teacher.
4. Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A life newspaper.B.An advertisement.
C.An education magazine.D.A science textbook.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章认为社会变化导致了人们对于成年的观念的变化。

5 . Japan recently lowered its voting age from 20 to 18. This decision was in order to help young people feel more engaged in politics. But it may also signal the change of social views regarding the beginning of adulthood.

Adulthood has traditionally been defined by a combination of age and the achievement of social milestones (里程碑). Most countries have a legally defined age to determine when a person becomes an adult — the age of majority. In Australia, most states consider a person to be an adult in court at 18. The age of 18 is also consistent with other adult privileges, such as the right to purchase alcohol and to marry. However, 17-year-olds can serve in the army and get a driver’s licence. The law defines adulthood on the basis of age and it also recognizes the process of becoming an adult as involving himself gradually in social responsibility. This legal approach to adulthood is mirrored in other countries, where there are differences between the age of majority and social responsibility given to young people.

Socially, determinants of adulthood traditionally focus on a person taking increasing responsibility for their lives in various ways. Completing school, taking full-time employment, getting married and parenthood — these are all observable indicators to determine when a person is viewed as an adult.

Since the 1980s, however, people have achieved some of these observable milestones at later ages. Increased access to education has delayed young people leaving home and developing romantic relationships. Economic changes have also resulted in unstable employment markets and increases in costs of living, prompting many young people to remain at home and dependent on parents.

Due to these social changes, our expectations of young people and their level of social responsibility have also changed. The recognition of a new life stage — emerging (发展初期的) adulthood — has been recommended to account for the changes to social milestones that have traditionally represented adulthood.

1. What can we learn about adulthood from the text?
A.People reach observable indicators much later.
B.Age alone is a reliable determinant of adulthood.
C.Participation in politics is a responsibility for adulthood.
D.Economic changes mainly shift people’s views on adulthood.
2. What right can people enjoy at the age of 17 in most states of Australia?
A.Voting.B.Buying wines.C.Getting married.D.Driving legally.
3. What does the underlined word “prompting” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Encouraging.B.Advising.C.Forbidding.D.Persuading.
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Emerging adulthood reflects a new life stage.
B.Adulthood is defined differently in different places.
C.Social changes are challenging the idea of adulthood.
D.Adulthood is a combination of rights and responsibilities.

文章大意:本文是说明文,主题语境是“人与社会”。以色列的一家公司受到母乳的启发,研制出一种营养价值与母乳类似的蛋白质粉,以增进人们的健康。

6 . There is nothing more nutritious than mother’s milk, which is packed with vitamins, nutrients, antibodies and other bioactive proteins (蛋白质) designed to help newborn babies grow.

Now, Maolac, a start-up based in Northern Israel, has successfully recreated the healthful characteristics of human breast milk by using the highly nutritious milk of cows that have just given birth. Maolac’s founder Maya Otmazgin said the inspiration for their product came to her while she was nursing her first child. “Mother’s milk can provide different nutrition for a small human being and I realized we could create something new inspired by it,” she said.

Otmazgin and her team began by mapping the composition of breast milk, figuring out which proteins do what. They discovered that there are more than 1,500 bioactive proteins in human breast milk. The next step of the process was to find a natural material made up of proteins that matched the make-up of human breast milk. For that, the team used a special algorithm (计算程序) to match the proteins in breast milk to the ones in the bovine colostrum (牛初乳) and found a 95 percent similarity between the two materials.

The final product is a protein powder that can be added to food for people of all ages. The company plans to initially market their product to athletes to help them improve their recovery ability, and then to the elderly to foster improved mobility and a more active lifestyle. The product could also eventually be used to help people who suffer from diseases.

Jon Medved, CEO of OurCrowd, one of Maolac’s funders, said that the use of bovine colostrum is “the perfect example of the circular economy in practice”. Every year billions of liters of bovine colostrum are thrown away by the dairy industry. This means that using bovine colostrum is not only far more economical for Maolac than using other natural materials, but most importantly, their product is also sustainable and environmentally friendly.

1. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic.B.To provide background information.
C.To attract readers’ attention.D.To show the importance of mother’s milk.
2. What gave Otmazgin the idea of making their product?
A.Her study of breast milk.B.Her experience of breast-feeding.
C.Her knowledge about cows.D.Her enthusiasm for innovation.
3. Who will first benefit from the new product?
A.Athletes.B.Babies.C.Patients.D.The elderly.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.A star-up in Israel.B.The founder of Maolac.
C.A new product inspired by mother’s milk.D.Bovine colostrum.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,本文主要介绍了非遗传承人“面人郎”——郎佳子彧对面人制作的挚爱和追求及其传承文化的责任和担当。

7 . Walking into Lang Jiaziyu’s workshop in Beijing, one can see lively dough figurines (面人) and certificates of honor neatly placed on the workbench. However, one can never expect that this third-generation inheritor (继承人) of the national-level intangible heritage of dough figurine making is a young man born after 1995.

Lang developed a preference for the art at a young age, starting to learn the craft from his father when he was about four to five years old. Despite repeatedly practicing the same skills, the boy never felt bored. Instead, he gained quite a great deal of pleasure from the craft. Under the influence of his father, Lang developed a sense of responsibility to carry forward the art when he was young.

Lang had previously considered dough figurines to be an old-fashioned craft, having also felt that the raw materials used for the craft formed a limit on his creativity, stirring up doubts as to why he had chosen making dough figurines as a career from the beginning. However, when Lang visited an art exhibition as a university student, he was impressed by how one artisan there had made bread into various shapes, and then dried them to generate cracks on their outer surfaces to present a unique aesthetic (美学的) form.

“Then, I came to realize that instead of complaining about the raw materials, I should pay more attention to improving my skills so that I could turn the ‘disadvantages’ of the dough into something that I could make full use of to make my works more expressive,” Lang said.

The young man has also turned to new media to promote the art of dough modeling. For Lang, making dough figurines is a process of self-expression, and it gives him great pleasure to just be himself. “This is what I’m good at and attracted to, and I’m delighted to see a trend toward the revitalization (复兴) of traditional Chinese culture nowadays”.

1. What do we know about Lang in paragraph 1?
A.His dough figurines are highly thought of.
B.He is a dough figurine businessman.
C.He is the first dough figurines maker.
D.He is in his early thirties.
2. How did Lang once feel about dough figurine making?
A.He felt tired of practicing the same skills.
B.He got great pressure from it.
C.He thought it was his father’s duty to carry it forward.
D.He never got bored with it.
3. What inspired Lang for more impressive dough works?
A.His responsibility for Chinese culture.
B.Another artisan’s bread presentation.
C.His discovery of his own disadvantages
D.His enthusiasm for making dough figurines.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Just Do It
B.Traditional Chinese Culture
C.The Development of the Dough Figurine Making
D.It Feels Cool to Be a Dough Figurine Artisan

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲让撒谎者在进行多个任务分心时测谎,更容易让撒谎者被暴露出来。

9 . A new method of lie detection shows that lie tellers who are made to multi-task while being interviewed are easier to spot. The extra brain power needed to concentrate on a secondary task other than lying was particularly challenging.

Professor Aldert Vriji from the University of Portsmouth designed an experiment to identify lie tellers. The 164 participants in the experiment were first asked to give their levels of support or opposition about various societal topics that were in the news. They were then given a truth or lie condition by chance and interviewed about the three topics that they felt most strongly about. Truth tellers were instructed to report their true opinions while lie tellers were instructed to lie about their opinions during the interviews.

For the secondary task, participants were given a seven-digit (数字) car number and instructed to recall it back to the interviewer. Half of them received additional instructions that if they could not remember the car number during the interview, they may be asked to write down their opinions after the interview.

Participants were given the opportunity to prepare themselves for the interview and were told it was important to come across as convincing as possible during the interviews — which was incentivized by being entered into a prize draw.

The results showed that lie tellers’ stories sounded less reasonable and less clear than truth tellers’ stories, particularly when lie tellers were given the secondary task and told that it was important.

“The pattern of result suggests that the introduction of secondary tasks in an interview could help lie detection but such tasks need to be introduced carefully. It seems that a secondary task will only be effective if lie tellers do not neglect it. This can be achieved by either telling interviewees that the secondary task is important, or by introducing one that cannot be neglected,’’ said Professor Vriji.

1. What can we learn about participants in the experiment?
A.Some truth tellers gave false opinions in the interview.
B.Not all participants knew the importance of the secondary task.
C.Participants didn’t express opinions about news topics.
D.Participants chose a truth or lie condition by themselves.
2. What does the underlined word “incentivized” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Motivated.B.Chosen.C.Completed.D.Corrected.
3. On what condition was the secondary task effective in the experiment?
A.When participants took it seriously.
B.When participants had strong brain power.
C.When participants paid little attention to it.
D.When participants had the chance to prepare.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Interviewing Lie Tellers.B.Covering up the Truth.
C.Challenging a Secondary Task.D.Exposing Liars by Distraction.
