文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,失眠会导致情绪问题,而且还有可能影响人的行为方式。

6 . Scientists have done a lot of research on sleep. They’ve shown that sleeplessness can lead to both weight gain and poor performance in school. Might it also affect your moods (情绪) or your behavior? A team of scientists based in Shanghai, China decided to investigate.

To do that, they took advantage of data (数据) from what’s known as the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. Begun in 2015, this study followed over 10, 000 U. S. kids into adulthood. All were 9 to 10 years old when they started taking part. ABCD researchers have been collecting records from parents on how much their kids sleep on a regular basis. The scientists also have been surveying whether a kid might have a habit of getting into fights or breaking rules. They even note whether students have difficulty focusing their attention.

Wei Cheng, a mathematician from China, teamed up with other researchers, making a detailed study of the ABCD data. Cheng’s group found out that kids who on average slept less than 7 hours a night were more likely to have behavior problems than kids who slept more. Kids who missed out on sleep also had more mood problems, including depression. Feeling sad or blue for longer than a week or two can be a sign of depression. Poor sleepers were also more likely to have stomach problems and headaches.

According to Kyla Wahlstrom, a professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, at night, your brain sorts information to link related facts but it takes the brain longer to organize negative (消极的) moods than positive ones. If you don’t get enough sleep, your brain might not have time to finish tidying up. If the brain runs out of time, you’re left with negative moods. That may explain why Cheng’s group found out not getting enough sleep was connected with mood problems, says Wahlstrom.

1. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The data.B.The good performance.
C.The ABCD Study.D.The investigation.
2. How did Wei Cheng and his group conduct their study?
A.By analyzing the data collected by others.B.By observing the American kids’ behavior.
C.By gathering information on American kids.D.By recording the American kids’ sleeping time.
3. Why is Kyla Wahlstrom mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To stress the importance of enough sleep.B.To encourage people to sleep more at night.
C.To introduce the danger of negative moods.D.To further explain the findings of Cheng’s group.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Keeping Fit by Sleeping WellB.Making Yourself a Perfect Sleeper
C.Remove Bad Moods by Having a Good SleepD.Putting Yourself in a Positive State of Mind

7 . This has been a year full of natural disasters, like hurricanes, wildfires and floods. Behind many of them, though, is an unfolding event that shows no sign of stopping: climate change. Here we meet some students who have been using science to help people deal with the effects of the changing climate. Their research places them among 30 finalists at the 10th Broadcom MASTERS, a research program open to middle-school investigators.

Ryan Honary, a 12-year-old student in California, has personal experience with wildfires. One day, he was with his father at a tennis tournament when he saw wildfires raging across his home state on TV. “I called my mom and asked if she was okay.” Ryan recalls. Once he knew that she was, he asked his dad why wildfires got out of control so often. “We’re planning to send people to Mars but we can’t detect wildfires,” Ryan says.

That’s when Ryan decided to create a way to detect wildfires early — before they get out of control. He linked together a series of mini computers that had sensors to detect smoke. When smoke was detected, data was transferred wirelessly to another computer, which served as a mini meteorological(气象的) station.

Ryan brought his entire system to a park and tested it by holding the flame from a lighter in front of each sensor. When they sensed a fire, they informed the detector. It then alerted an app that Ryan built for his phone. While creating that app, Ryan talked with Mohammed Kachuee, a graduate student at the University of California. He helped Ryan use machine learning to train his app with data from 2018 Camp Fire, the most destructive fire in California history. The app took lessons from how this fire had traveled over time. Using those data, the app “learned” to tell how flames at future events might spread.

Someday, Ryan hopes his sensors might be used throughout his state. “Five of the worst fires in California just happened in the last three months,” he notes.

1. What is the function of the app Ryan built for his phone?
A.To transfer data about campfires.B.To detect smoke from wildfires.
C.To predict how a fire might spread.D.To show how we can prevent a fire.
2. Which of the following best describes Ryan?
A.Caring and creative.B.Brave and optimistic.
C.Ambitious and demanding.D.Hardworking and intelligent.
3. What is the text mainly about?
A.The effects of changing climate.
B.A boy’s experience with wildfires.
C.A research program open to students.
D.A student’s scientific research on wildfires.

8 . According to the National Federation of the Blind, fewer than 10 percent of the 1.3 million people who are legally blind in the U.S. are braille readers. But one woman has made a difference in their lives and my son's life, too.

35 years ago, my son, Jared, was born blind. Fortunately, I learned about a life-changing organization when Jared's teacher introduced us to Seedlings Braille Books for Children. It was founded by Debra Bonde, who helped blind children all over the world.

A shy woman, Debra just wanted to find a volunteer job she could do without having to talk to anyone. So, she signed up for a braille transcription(转录)class in the hope of translating books into braille in the basement of her Detroit home.

Debra began transcribing popular children's books, printing them on a braille printer and selling them for just the cost of the paper.

Word spread among parents and teachers of blind children, and demand grew for more of her books. Friends helped her to form a nonprofit organization so she could start getting grants(拨款)and donations to help with production costs. She named it Seedlings Braille Books for Children because she believes that if you give a child a book, the love for reading will grow. Seedlings has produced 600,000 books across the world so far. They give half of their books away for free. The other half are sold for an average price of only $10 each, about half the cost of producing them.

As a mother, I appreciated that Seedlings provided "typical" experiences for Jared in school. Since books from Seedlings were affordable, it was possible to have a home library. Without the childhood skills Seedlings provided to Jared, he would not have a job as a software engineer now.

1. How did the author get to know Seedlings Braille Books for Children?
A.From Jared's teacher.B.From the library.C.From her friend.D.From other parents.
2. Why did Debra sign up for a braille transcription class?
A.To make a living.B.To read more braille books.
C.To do volunteer work alone.D.To start a nonprofit organization.
3. Which of the following can best describe Debra Bonde?
A.Talented and social.B.Shy and generous.C.Helpful and brave.D.Mild and neat.
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author lived an easy and rich life.
B.Jared got along well with all his classmates.
C.The author attached importance to her son's reading.
D.Jared will spread the skills he learned during his childhood.
