When Mills Godwin High School’s 11th grader Laasya Konidala isn’t studying, you’ll usually find her baking in the kitchen or doing a puzzle with her mother. For her, family is everything. But recently, her family received terrible news.

This past year her grandmother was diagnosed (诊断) with breast cancer. But she didn’t sit back and worry, she     1     (祈祷) for her grandmother and went to work.

“As someone who has a lot of natural curiosity and as a researcher, one of the first things I did was to d    2     into reading articles and papers as much as I can,” Konidala said.

Teaching herself to code (编码), she entered the MEDARVA Science Fair, presenting research that bridges the gap between predicting breast cancer sub-types with good classification models. And she won! It’s research that could help to     3     (发现) and treat breast cancer. As you can imagine, her grandmother is very proud.

“She knew I was into     4     (science) research, but she never expected me to do something directly related to her. She was at a loss for words,” she said.

Her mother, Rekha Rasineni is not. She tells you what a hard worker Laasya can be.

“Some days we tell her ‘You don’t need to be     5     (produce) and working all day. Take it easy.’ But she doesn’t like that. She likes to study and do puzzles and bake and maybe even save lives with her research.”

A decade after America     1     (退出) from Vietnam, the seeds of the often heart-breaking history, A Piece of My Heart, were sown when writer and filmmaker Keith Walker met a woman who had been an emergency room nurse in Cu Chi and Da Nang. She and 25 others       2     (回想) the time they spent in Vietnam as part of the 15,000 American women who volunteered or served as nurses in the military. After working on too many mutilated (截肢的) young     3     (士兵), one nurse talked of wanting to ask her mother to “check around and see if she could find one whole eighteen-year-old”.

Many returned with post-traumatic stress disorder (创伤后精神紧张性障碍). They still felt     4     (惊恐) rising within them. “The one thing Vietnam did for me was that I felt like I could walk on water,” said a nurse.

Many parents have probably felt at one time or another that one of their child’s teachers is a “miracle worker”, a teacher who somehow gets results where other teachers have failed. Although the idea of a miracle worker has entered common parlance (用语), the expression     1     (was invented, had invented) by Mark Twain to describe one person in particular. That person was Anne Sullivan, the teacher of Helen Keller.

Anne Sullivan, who     2     (has been, had been) blind for much of the first part of her life, was first employed to teach blind and deaf Helen in 1887, at the age of 20. Educated at Perkins School for the Blind in Boston, Sullivan     3     (has recovered, had recovered) part of her eyesight by the time she traveled to Alabama to begin her job as Helen Keller’s governess.

Undoubtedly, Sullivan’s own partial blindness     4     (gave, has given) her an understanding of the little girl’s closed-off world. As the 1957 play The Miracle Worker so effectively described it, Sullivan’s breakthrough with Keller came soon after she    5     (spelled, has spelled) words out on Helen’s open palm to make her understand that things had words attached to them. Sullivan suggested Keller’s family send her to Perkins School for the Blind, and from that point on, she had been Keller’s companion until her death in 1936. Helen Keller lived a long life as a successful and inspiring writer, lecturer, and activist. None of this would have been possible if Keller     8     (did not meet, had not met) Anne Sullivan, the woman we remember as the “miracle worker”.

I used to be a lazy student who often fell asleep in class. Worse still, I associated with bad friends. As a result, I was     1    (落后的) in my studies. It was not until the beginning of the new term that I     2    (开始) to behave well because my English teacher, Miss Yang, a beautiful and attractive lady, kept encouraging me not to give up studying. Under her influence, I was aware of my mistakes and decided to change my     3    (态度) entirely. Every day I     4    (上学) school on time and pay attention to my teachers in class. To     5    (避免) making the same mistakes, I usually attach a note to my desk as a reminder. Knowing that my studies are     6    (糟糕的), I want to improve it badly by making an effort. With their help, it is not long before I make progress and catch up with my classmates. What astonished everybody was that I attained the championship and was     10    (授予) a gold medal. Now, not only do I go all out to study but I often exercise because only in this way can I keep the balance between study and relaxation.
