Born on April 26, 1917,     1     a prosperous banking dynasty in Suzhou, Pei grew up mostly in Hong Kong and Shanghai. At the age of 17, he left for the United States to study architecture at MIT and then Harvard University.

Pei gained broad national attention in the United States with structures like the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, but     2     was the Louvre Pyramid that Brought him international fame.

The official     4     (appoint) to oversee the project asked Pei to join the team. Pei made three secretive trips to Paris and eventually agreed to take on the project.

The heart of Pei’s design included not only a renovation of the Cour Napoleon in the midst of the buildings, but also a transformation of the interiors. And Pei designed the glass and steel pyramid     5     (serve) as the entrance to the Louvre. Mitterrand liked his plan, but the public reacted harshly to the design, mostly    6     the proposed pyramid.

In an attempt to soothe public anger, Pei took a suggestion from then-mayor of Paris Jacques Chirac and placed a full-sized model of the pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre. During the four days of its exhibition,     7     estimated 60,000 people visited the site.     8     (witness) the proposed scale of the pyramid, critics eased their opposition.

The experience was exhausting for Pei, but also rewarding. “After the Louvre,” he said later, “I thought no project     10     (be) too difficult.” Now the Louvre Pyramid is Pei’s most famous structure.

3D Printing in Food Production

There’s a new frontier in 3D printing that’s beginning to come into focus: food. Over the past few years, researchers     1     (develop) machines that print, cook, and serve foods on a mass scale. And the industry isn’t stopping there.

Food production

With a 3D printer, a cook     2     print complicated chocolate sculptures and beautiful pieces for decoration on a wedding cake. A restaurant in Spain has re-created forms and pieces of food     3     are “exactly the same,” freeing cooks to complete other tasks. In another restaurant, all of the dishes     4     (produce) by 3D printing rather than farm to table are well received among customers.

Sustainability

The global population is expected to grow to 9.6 billion by 2050, and some analysts estimate that food production will need to be raised by 50 percent to maintain current levels. As is known to all, sustainability is     5     people nowadays put great emphasis on. Some experts believe printers could use hydrocolloids (水解胶体) from plentiful renewables like algae (藻类) and grass to replace the familiar ingredients, thus     6     (reduce) fuel use and air pollution.

Nutrition

Future 3D food printers could make processed food much     7     (healthy). A professor at Columbia University said, “Food printing could allow consumers     8     (print) food with individualized nutritional content. So instead of eating a piece of yesterday’s bread from the supermarket, you’d eat something baked just for you on demand.”

Challenges

9     recent development in 3D food printing, the industry has many challenges to overcome. Currently, most ingredients must be changed to a paste (糊状物) before a printer can use them, and the printing process is quite time-consuming     10     ingredients interact with each other in very complex ways. On top of that, most of the 3D food printers now are restricted to dry ingredients, because meat and milk products may easily go bad. Some experts are doubtful about 3D food printers, believing they are better suited for fast food restaurants than homes and high-end restaurants.
