Formed in 2001, the China International Search and Rescue Team ( CISAR ) brings help and hope to those     1     lives are changed by natural disasters.

The team went     2     its first international rescue mission (使命) in 2003. It was the first time that a Chinese team had worked outside China, and the team won high praise for their     3     (brave) and skills. The list of people to whom help has been given ever since     4     (be) long. The team treated more than 3,000 people who were injured in the 2006 earthquake in Indonesia, and spent several months     5     (give) aid to over 25,000 victims (受害者）of the 2010 floods in Pakistan.

Rescue workers     6     (train) to find people, treat the injured, and hand out food, water, and other supplies. There is     7     (usual) no electricity or water after a disaster and diseases and accidents may appear.     8     (save) lives, rescue workers have to work day and night, and sadly they must also bury     9     dead, which means they have to be strong in both the body and the mind. Rescue workers must have big hearts, too. Of course, they’ll have to take     10     (effect) measures in action. The members of the CISAR are always ready to go wherever help is needed.

Thirty years ago,    1    elderly Canadian couple worked on a unique project with the intention of    2    （help）Canadians have a better understanding of China. Their efforts resulted    3    the birth of a 1985 book, Understanding China through cartoons. They    4    （official）donated it to China on June 10, 2019.

    5    （improve）knowledge about China among Canadians, they founded a society in the early 1970s,     6    is now known as the Canadian-China Friendship Society. The elderly couple    7    （be）determined to gift it to China as their    8    （admire）for Chinese culture.

“China is the only nation that has been able to maintain its cultural growth for thousands of years,” the husband said. In fact, communication has been the    9    （good）way to promote each other’s understanding and trust. We need more people like the elderly couple    10    more constitutions like the society.

A terrible earthquake hit the city of Tangshan on July 28, 1976, in which thousands of people died and many     1    (injure). Many houses fell down and sand filled the wells instead of water. People were greatly shocked. All the electricity in the city was cut     2    and people started to wonder how long the disaster would last. The whole city was     3    (complete) destroyed and the world seemed at     4    (it) end.

The people of Tangshan didn’t lose hope, because 150,000 soldiers were sent     5    (help) the rescue workers. The soldiers tried their best to dig out those     6    were trapped. Workers built shelters for the     7    (survive). Fresh water was taken to the city by every means. Slowly, the city started to come back to life.

It was said that before the quake, strange things were happening in     8    countryside. The water in the village wells     9    (rise) and fell. Fish jumped out of the ponds. Strange noises were heard in the sky,    10    people thought little of them.

The art of paper-cutting in China may date back to the second century, since paper    1    (invent)by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. As paper became more affordable, paper0cutting became one of the most important    2    (type) of Chinese folk art. Later,    3     different regions adopting their own cultural styles, this art form spread to other parts of the world.    4     (usual), the artworks are made of red paper, as red is associated with    5    (happy) in Chinese culture, but other colors are also used.

With    6    (it) long history, paper-cutting,    7    originated in China, has been very popular among the ordinary Chinese people. People put up papercuts on walls, windows and doors at wedding ceremonies or festivals     8    (strengthen) the cheerful atmosphere.

Chinese papercuts are rich in content. The auspicious（吉祥的）designs symbolize good luck and the avoidance of evil. The child, lotus and bat designs suggest a family with    9    large number of children and grandchildren. Birds, livestock, fruit, fish and worms are also familiar objects    10    (accept) by Chinese farmers. In a word, papercuts used in different occasions have different meanings.

David was one of     1     most helpful students that we ever had. In 2004, he went to university in London and became interested in Chinese culture.

After his     2     (graduate) from university, he went to China to study Chinese at Beijing Language and Culture University. Two years later, he was able to speak Chinese     3     (fluent) and achieved high grades in all subjects.     4     (finish) his studies, he started travelling in China. Some of the cities in China he likes most     5     (be) Beijing, Shanghai, Harbin and Nanjing. In China he develops an interest in teaching English to Chinese students. Most of the students whom he taught       6     (become) his friends ever since.

When he returned to Britain two months ago, he brought back from China many     7     (interest) books, dictionaries, paintings and photos     8     (spread) Chinese culture. He donated (捐赠) most of them to our school library. Some of the books were gifts     9     he got from his Chinese friends and students. The paintings that David donated to the school are being shown in the exhibition room. Teachers and students at our school wish to thank David     10     his kindness.
