My husband and I were paying a visit    1    my parents in Tucson. We went to a fast-food restaurant for dinner together. My husband went to the counter(柜台)    2    (order) dishes and I stood with my parents.

My dad is 90 years old. He can hardly see very well and walks with a stick. I was looking around in the restaurant,    3    (wait) to sit at the first table that was    4    (convenient) than others. A woman who was sitting with her son saw me and asked me to come to her. With a puzzled look on my face, I pointed to     5    (me)and said, “Me?” . I always believe that there are    9    (nature) kind people in this world. This woman has set a good example to her son,     10    is a really lucky guy.

Have you ever asked yourself why children go to school? You will    1    (probable)say that they go to learn languages, history, science and some other knowledge. That is quite true, but why do they learn these things?

We send our children to school to prepare them    2    the future when they grow up and have to work for    3    (they) . Nearly everything they study at school has some practical use in their life. But is that    4    only reason why they go to school?

There is more in education    5    just learning facts. We go to school to learn how to learn, so that when we have left school we can continue to learn. A man    6    really knows how to learn will always be successful, because when he has to do something new, he will not only be able to do it well himself, he will also be able    7    (teach) others how to do it in the best way. We were first greeted with the barking by a pack of dogs, seven to be exact. They were well trained by their masters     4     had great experience with caring for these animals. For breakfast, we were able to eat papaya(木瓜) and other fruits from their trees in the backyard.

Six-year-old Canadian schoolboy Ryan decided to help the people in some     1     (develop) countries to get clean water. At first, he wanted to build a well somewhere in Africa. It is     10     amazing journey!

My decision to travel around China was merely due to my being     1     (curiosity) about the place. Before I paid a visit to China, I had been prepared a lot.

After travelling from Beijing up to Xi'an, I wanted to challenge     2     (I) by choosing a smaller town—Xiahe in Gansu Province. I arrived in Lanzhou at around 5 am, but only     3     (tell) that there were no buses to Xiahe. I managed to see a policeman and attempted to explain to him the destination     4     I planned to go in simple English, praying that he would understand. I wasn't sure that he did but I just followed him anyway as I had no choice. He took me on a bus but I didn't know where I was going. Fortunately, I met a student who explained to me in English that the policeman was taking me to another bus station where I could take a bus to Xiahe. During this conversation a third man said he was also a policeman and would help me buy tickets. But as he was not in uniform(制服), I was afraid that he     5     not be a policeman.     6     some extent I was doubtful about his real identity. The uniformed policeman's immediate     7     (recommend) was that I should go with the third man. Having got off the bus, I followed the so-called policeman. But at this point, he disappeared and I was left in the middle of nowhere. I stood there,     8     (feel) a little frightened. Around one minute later a police car came and stopped right by me. It was the policeman who didn't wear a uniform.     9     (incredible) he told me to get into the car and he dropped me directly at the bus station, and helped me buy the ticket.

This is one of many things that I     10    (experience) in China so far. Regardless of different cultures, there was one thing that would always stand out—kindness. The people I met showed their kindness and friendliness.
