1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had entered a new school so he had no friends yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.

At school, Asad could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Asad quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.

Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class but he was a very arrogant boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.

When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar?” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.

When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad’s, as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

Jack couldn’t believe it when he saw them. The trainers (运动鞋) were on top of a cardboard box, next to a pile of rubbish bins. And they look really good and brand new. He peered inside the trainers and found they were just his size. Jack cried out, “Why would anyone throw them away?” Anna shrugged. Anna was his best friend, but Jack didn’t expect her to understand. She knew that he liked running and she even helped by timing him when he ran around the park. But Jack didn’t just like running---he was crazy about it.

He unzipped his school bag and put the trainers into his bag. “It’s the Area Cross-Country Championships in two weeks,” he said. “I’ll never do well in my worm old trainers. These will give me a chance.”

Anna nodded. She knew how important the Championships were to Jack. Five runners were selected from each school in the area. Jack hadn’t been chosen, but then one of the runners had gone to hospital. So they picked Jack to be his replacement in the race. Jack knew he had no chance of beating Beadle, the best runner in the school. However, he would be happy if he just did okay in the race---he didn’t want to let himself down.

Much to their surprise, something unusual happened when Jack put on the trainers. Usually Jack set out at a light jog at first when he practised running. But this time he reached top speed straight away. He didn’t plan it---it just happened. It felt as if he was running on air. He zoomed round the park and kept picking up sped. In fact he just had to relax and the trainers did the running. However, Anna felt really upset. She knew no pair of normal trainers could make such a difference. Anna shook her head, “You shouldn’t wear them in the race. It won’t be YOU who wins, will it? Anyone could win if they wore those trainers.” But Jack wouldn’t listen. “I won’t give them up. These trainers are my only chance to win that Championship. I don’t need your help!” he shouted. With that he turned and ran off like a speeding train.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.

He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.

I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.

The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Snowflakes dancing in the sky, it was an awfully cold winter. Mary felt as gray as the sky outside. She struggled to get by the tough winter because her bills went up while her income went down.

Her refrigerator sat empty. Her only food consisted of peanut butter, bread and bananas, only enough for two sandwiches. Worse still, it would be four days before she got paid. As Mary prepared to sit down and eat half of her remaining food, she heard a knock at the door. Who could it be on such a freezing night?   Robbery scenes from films flashed across her mind. Then Mary shook her head and laughed at her foolish thought-no robber would choose her as a target. Opening the door, she saw a stranger standing outside, body trembling with cold.

“Madam, sorry to disturb you, but I'm lost and get stuck in the snow. Could you please spare a piece of bread?" the stranger asked cautiously and politely in a weak but deep voice.

“I'm afraid not,” said Mary, “but I could make you a peanut butter and banana sandwich.”

“That sounds wonderful,” the stranger answered. "Mind if I wait here on the porch?”

“Yes, I do mind,” Mary replied, "but you could come in and eat it at the table.”

Not expecting both food and warmth, the stranger entered the house eagerly. Mary hurried off to the kitchen for the last four pieces of bread, peanut butter, and bananas. In a few minutes, she returned and invited him to sit down to eat what she could offer. After eating, the man thanked and said goodbye to her.

Looking outside, Mary hesitated a moment and said, "If you don't mind, you can sleep on the sofa.” "That would be good enough," responded the man gratefully.

Mary went into her room, and locked the door. The next morning, when she woke up,   she remembered the man. "How will I tell him I have nothing for breakfast?" she asked herself. She dressed, unlocked, and opened the door slightly.

My best friend's mother was a social worker in Detroit, Michigan.   Because of that, my friend Victoria and I were introduced early to the world of volunteering.

We did plenty of charity(慈善) work.   We always had a good time, and continued to volunteer whenever we had time, often even when we didn't.   It became second nature.   Hairstyles came and went, but Victoria and I found places to donate our time because that's how we were raised.

One particular morning we signed up for "Paint the Town",an organization in Detroit to help lowincome homeowners clean their houses.   We were assigned(分配) a dilapidated(破烂的) house in one of the worst communities of the city.   I was afraid as we got near to the front door, not knowing who we would find on the other side.   We knocked three times quickly and stepped back, waiting to be let in.

When the door opened, my mouth did, too.   Standing there was a little old lady with wisps(一束) of white hair and a purple apron(围裙) tied around her waist.

"Hello" she said, "I'm Amelia.   Please come in and I will show you where to start."Her smile shone brightly.   “I am just baking some cookies for you girls to eat.”

As she led us to the parts of her house that needed painting, my heart softened.   Here was one of the scariest looking houses in the city, but behind its doors was a sweet old lady with a cane and a big smile.

Here we were coming to help her, and instead she was doing something for us—baking homemade cookies and serving us tea!

Lily was cleaning windows, and it was what she must do for her family's new Chinese restaurant. Everything had to be absolutely perfect: unique decorations, skillful employees, and delicious traditional food. Then customers would love the place, making the business a success.

Lily's family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was opened yesterday. She was new in the neighbor and had few friends. The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. She was eager for a friendship, though.

Lily shifted her vision to look outside the restaurant as a girl about her age, with abundant red hair, walked up the street. The girl paused to study the sign announcing their opening and then looked directly at Lily with a friendly smile. Lily smiled back shyly and lifted a hand, accidentally waving with the cleaning cloth. The girl smiled at her amusement and waved back happily.

Lily hesitated, not accustomed to starting friendship, but she felt courageous, so she opened the door. "Hello," she said, adding the first thing that entered her head, “do you like Chinese food?”

“I don't know, but I like to try new things," the girl remarked, and then she introduced herself as Gabriela.

Lily could not think of additional conversation until she had a sudden idea.

Since he didn't have anything to do that day, he didn't leave immediately. Instead, he stood outside his grandson's classroom and looked in through the window.

"Yes, that's true. I can read nothing without them," replied the teacher.

"But you can read once you put them on, can't you?" asked the old man.

"Yes, that's true, too," replied the teacher, wondering why the old man was asking such strange questions.

Bales left the pavement of Base Road and stepped onto snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire’s Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every emergency and intended to walk alone.

She’d checked the weather forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left. Based on her experience, Bales knew that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better adjust her body temperature as conditions changed.

The hike up the lower part of Jewell Trail was pleasant. Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. The sun shone through the trees and cast a shadow over her smiling face. Less than an hour later, loads of dark clouds had replaced the sunshine, and snow covered the surrounding trees.

She still smiled. However, the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added even more layers to shelter herself from the cold winds and thick fog. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge (山脊toward Mount Washington and began to think about calling it a day. Suddenly, she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her, which had been made by a pair of sneakers-typically not the type for hiking.

Meanwhile, Bales was getting colder, even though she was moving fast and generating some body heat. With strong gusts of wind screaming and attacking her back and left side, she decided to abandon her plan. The only thing, however, kept her on the trail was the sneaker tracks in the snow.

Paragraph 1:

Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not.

A tradesman was leading a caravan (商队) to another country to sell his goods. Along the way they came to the edge of a hot-sand desert. They learnt that during the daytime the sun heated up the fine sand until it was as hot as charcoal (木炭), so no one could walk on it — not even camels! Then the caravan leader hired a desert guide, one who could follow the stars, so they could travel only at night when the sand cooled down. The guide sat on the first cart. And they began the dangerous night-time journey across the desert. A couple of nights later, after eating their evening meal and waiting for the sand to cool, they started out again.

Later that night, the desert guide, who was driving the first cart, saw from the stars that they were getting close to the other side of the desert. He had been very tired, so when he relaxed, he fell asleep. Then the camels who, of course, couldn’t tell directions by reading the stars, gradually turned to the side and went in a big wide circle until they ended up at the same place that they started from! By then it was morning, and the people woke up and realized they were back at the same spot where they started. They lost heart and began to cry about their condition. Since the desert crossing was supposed to be over by now, they had no more water, and they were worried about there was nothing to drink, and were extremely afraid they would die of thirst. They even began to blame the caravan leader and the desert guide. However, the leader himself didn’t lose courage. He talked with the desert guide and then they began wandering, trying to work out a plan.

Facial recognition technology has increasingly been used in China, from airports, hotels, hospitals, restaurants and even tourist spots. Guo Bing, a law professor at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, has filed a lawsuit against(起诉) a local wildlife park because it requires visitors to walk through a compulsory facial recognition lane for admission.

China Daily held a forum on this case. Here are the selections of the views.

Johanna (China)

My concern is that my data might get leaked or sold to some company. My cellphone could be unlocked, my account hacked, and what would I do? Passwords can be changed, but I just can’t change my face. The government needs to start regulating this face identification. Misuse of data ought to come with penalties. Companies should face serious consequences if they fail to follow the rules.

Markwu (Malaysia)

Facial recognition really marks a leap forward in transportation. Truly, technology offers convenience to our clothing, dining, traveling and housing. It also helps law enforcement departments preempt(抢先行动) criminals. To fight against terrorists, facial recognition is necessary, because prevention is better than cure.
