1 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There was a story that all the kids at my school told. I don’t know if they believed it but some of them certainly acted as if they did. On the way from my home to school there was a little old cottage. You could only just see the cottage, as if it were trying to hide itself behind the trees and bushy garden. At times the children had seen a little old woman make her way along the leaf-covered path from the front door to the mailbox. Her fingers were twisted in funny shapes, her body was bent over and her back hunched (弓背). If she lifted her head to look at you, her face was all wrinkly. “The witch at Number 97” was how most kids spoke of her. “Don’t look in her eyes,” you could hear them say. “She’ll capture you in a magic spell (魔咒), take you into the house and never release you again.”

In the mornings and at the end of the day, my friends and I would pass Number 97 in a group. We felt safer and more secure in numbers. But now, I played the recorder so well that I was asked to join the school band, and that meant staying after school one afternoon a week to rehearse (排练), so I had to walk home all by myself.

I set out as I normally would but as I began to approach the little old cottage it looked scarier than ever. For a while I hesitated, not knowing what to do. I wanted to run but felt I really needed to just walk my way as usual. I took some deep breaths and tried to think of something different: Home, supper and my bed. When I started thinking about the witch again, the cottage appeared big and frightening in my thoughts. “No,” I said to myself, “concentrate on how good it will feel to get home,” and with that I started to feel easier.

Julia spent most days doing the cleaning in a commercial building with a fancy supermarket, a gym, a spa (温泉疗养中心), and a few fast food places. . It was fairly populated, and people often showed kindness to her.

She often bought loaves of old-day bread in the supermarket and the employees there were familiar with her. During her break time, she liked to observe people, especially families. Julia often saw a lady in the building. Usually the lady went to the gym first and then headed to the spa. Later, she’d come out dressed like a manager. One day, the woman took her kid with her. The little boy was no more than eight years old and didn’t look happy to be there with his mom.

“Jimmy, come on. I have to go to the gym now and hurry to get to work on time later,” the mother said in a rush.

The boy protested with a sad voice, “What am I going to do while you’re working out?” “Just sit still and read your book in the waiting area,” the mother replied.

“Can you at least buy me some candy? You promised earlier,” the boy complained. “I don’t have time right now. Please hurry inside,” the mother answered.

Then the mother took the son’s hand and rushed into the gym. Julia witnessed this all and was reminded of her own similar busy life in the past. She was once also a young busy woman. Her personal and work-related matters always came first in her life. She failed to spare enough time for her son and attach enough importance to his wishes. When she realized her problems, it was too late. Her son lost his life in an accident, leaving her with deep sadness and regret. To make matters worse, her company went bankrupt (破产) soon after.

Reflecting on her past life, Julia had a thought. Though she was not wealthy, she wanted to do something nice for the boy: buy him a bar of chocolate.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.

With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.

When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?

As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.

Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.

During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”

Here is a secret that everyone knows: I don’t like to ask for help. Of course, my disability means that I need assistance when I get dressed and have to be driven everywhere, but that is precisely my point.

One night a few years ago, after my caregiver helped me to bed, I enjoyed my favorite part of my routine — playing with my service dog Marshall. When the rest of the world made me feel “lacking”, Marshall made me feel like “enough” .

As usual,   he jumped off the bed after a few minutes, but the pain in his eyes told me something was wrong. A few days later, a trip to the vet confirmed my worst fears. Dr Tom said, “I must perform an operation to treat him.”“Is he in pain?”I held my breath. Then I got the answer “Yes.”

I felt heartbroken. I couldn’t remember talking about the details. I had one huge question:“How much would the operation cost?”“About$2, 500. It might as well have been a million.” I couldn’t afford it. Each day, I searched for ways to raise money for this operation.

A beautiful bike trail was close to the apartment where we lived. On most of the days of our eight years together, Marshall and I used it. I loved the trees, the fresh air and being outside. Over the years, many of the neighbors got familiar with us. Everyone loved Marshall.

Then one day, an idea occurred to me. Could I ask these people to contribute to the cost of Marshall’s operation? If I could push my wheelchair a certain number of laps (圈) and get money for every lap that I completed, might I raise enough money for Marshall to have his operation? Our regular route was a mile and a half long. My goal was to push my wheelchair ten laps, a total of fifteen miles. Next, feeling very bold and a little nervous, I set a date. Then I made posters and posted them around my apartment and all over the bike trail. My neighbors were concerned for Marshall.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

Once, there was a villager called Rajkumar, who was very greedy and loved to take risks. One sunny summer morning, Rajkumar decided to walk his sheep out of his village for grass. After leaving his village, Rajkumar led his sheep to a small hill, which was close to a big forest and far away from his village.

When reaching the hill, Rajkumar looked for green grass. And he found it in the northern hillside. Then he let his sheep stay there to eat grass. One hour later, suddenly it started to rain heavily. To let his sheep escape the rain, Rajkumar led them to a cave nearby. And he tied them there, preventing them from running away.

When the rain became less heavy, feeling bored, Rajkumar left the cave and walked around. Soon he came to the western hillside. He found another cave there. And to his amazement, he saw many big wild goats inside the cave, which were also taking shelter from rain. Rajkumar thought if he could have these goats, he’d be the richest man in his village. So, he decided to use grass to attract them to his village. He knew there was little chance of success because the local wild goats feared humans and didn’t have much trust in humans. But he still wanted to have a try.

Since there was no fresh grass nearby, he came back to the previous hillside and started collecting grass. Soon Rajkumar managed to find a lot of grass. However, he found he didn’t have a rope to tie it. Looking at his sheep he had tied with a rope, he decided to untie them and use the rope to tie the grass. Although that meant the sheep would later probably run away, thinking about so many goats, he thought it was a risk worth taking. So Rajkumar untied his sheep. He tied the grass using the rope.

Carrying the grass, he came to the cave where the wild goats stayed.

8 . 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Lucy was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Lucy was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team as well. But this particular competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn’t want to let her teammates down.

When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Lucy was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.

She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though her stomach was doing somersaults (翻腾). Lucy’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.” “I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Lucy replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.

Lucy’s mom sensed her daughter’s worry and gave her a reassuring (令人宽慰的) pat on the back. “You’ll be great, dear. Just do your best. That’s all that matters.”

Lucy felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother’s kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had dissolved (消融). She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition, but when she opened her gym bag, she was quite surprised.

My best friend Lily and I met in high school. Ever since then, we had spent New Year’s Eve together. We’d watch together on TV the New Year celebration in Times Square, a the world-renowned tradition for millions to welcome the new year. Every year,   thousands of people will gather in Times Square New York in person on New Year’s Eve counting down to the new year, with celebrations and performances after midnight. And we’d always say that one day we should go there ourselves.

Then we both went to college. Struggling through exams and schoolwork, we had little time to meet up. We missed each other terribly and decided it was time: to finally go to New York ourselves, to be present at the New Year’s celebration, and to do something fun together.

We worked out our schedule, bought tickets for everything and, most importantly, planned how to survive the long hours of waiting in the biting cold before the celebration — we wanted the best spot possible, and there’s only so much space, so we had no choice but to get to the Time Square early.

When the big day finally arrived, it became snowy and colder than any cold we had ever experienced. Actually it was one of the coldest New Year’s Eves on record. Everyone thought we were going to back out.

But we didn’t. We didn’t make it that far to back out.

We woke up and set off early. And, of course, we did freeze along the way, but we kept cheering each other up. Once we got there, we found our way to the line pretty quickly, considering everyone else was pushing their way in the same direction. We got in line and waited to finally get into our area in the Time Square, which thankfully was pretty spacious and close to the stage.

Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes.

There were only two tickets to the big basketball game. All three of us paid our attention to the tickets in Dad’s hand. Marcus, the oldest, asked the question running through everyone’s mind. “Only two tickets? But Dad, which of us gets to go with you?”

“Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go?” repeated Caleb, the youngest. “Dad, can’t you get any more tickets?” I asked. I was the in -between sister, but I also wanted to go out with Dad. “I’m Afraid not,” Dad answered. “Mr. Williams only had two tickets. He was thoughtful enough to offer the tickets to me when he found out he’d be out of town this weekend.”

Dad was lost in thought. “Caleb, don’t you think you ‘re too young to enjoy a professional basketball game?” “No!” Caleb shouted “I know all the best players! I know the team’s record! I know…” “All right, all right,” Dad finally had to agree. He turned to me and tried again. “Jill, since you’re a girl…” Before I could reply, Mom said, “Jill’s out there practicing with Marcus and all of his friends, and she’s better than quite a few of them!”

“Okay, okay,” Dad held up his hands. “I guess I’ll have to find out a fair way of choosing among the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves it most.”

The next morning, Marcus hurried into the kitchen and sat down at the breakfast table. “Where’s Dad?” he asked as he reached for a box of biscuits. “He and Mom went to pick up some books from the library,” Caleb answered, reaching his hand out for a biscuit. “And he said we should all get started on our Saturday chores (家务) as soon as we finish the breakfast,” I added, enjoying my apple juice. “Chores? He must be kidding,” Marcus said. “How can we do the chores when the big game is only eleven hours away? I’m going to play basketball.” “Wait for me!” Caleb added, drinking the last of his milk and running after his brother.
