“Well, even if she doesn’t, she usually likes it when we visit her,” I said and knocked on the door.

Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened the door and saw our dressing.“Is today Halloween?” she asked.“I completely forgot. I am so sorry.”

Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”

“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.”

My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.

The cry of grief which fell upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.

“Please tell your boy to stop a moment, ” she said in husky tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.

In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.

Well, we did go and we did have a great time but I kept wishing Grandma could have been there with us. When we reached the monkey mountain, Grandpa told us to hold still and say “cheese" and snapped a good picture of the monkeys and us.

“Cheese!” I said. But Indi said, “Happy Valentine's Day, Grandma!”

"You were supposed to say cheese." said Grandpa.

Indi shrugged, “It just came out.”

"I'm glad it did" I said, because your words just gave me a fantastic idea! What if we take pictures of different animals, and then turn them into a special Valentine gift for Grandma?" Indi and Grandpa agreed and we kept taking pictures with delight for Grandma's surprise.

As soon as the naughty boy found himself free again, he began to throw dirt and stones at the stranger.

But James was very frightened when the man was struck on the head by a brick and badly hurt. All the boys ran away, and James slipped across the fields to his home.

As he drew near the house, his sister Caroline came out to meet him, holding up a beautiful gold chain and some new books for him to see. She told James that their uncle, who had been away several years, had come home, and was now in the house; that he had bought beautiful presents for the whole family; that he had left his carriage at the inn, a mile or two off and walked on foot so as to surprise his brother, their father.

I remained unbothered throughout the packing, planning and, of course, the instructions that went in one ear and out the other. My mind was on my phone, and the texts were flying back and forth. I was so absorbed in the screen in my hand, in fact, that the first time I can remember truly looking up was when we drove across a bridge to our campsite.

I stared out the window in a daze and saw redwoods towering above us, and a roaring river rushing by. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelled of pine. But none of that mattered to me. The reason I had looked up was for something far more serious. More shocking, my phone no longer had service.

Then my dad disclosed that he had chosen a campsite that had no cell service, and my phone — my lifeline —would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world. On the first day, I shouted, I bargained, I begged. However, none of it would add bars to my cell service. I went to bed angry that night, thinking I would be bored to death the next day.

“Now, parents and students separate into two groups. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour.”

Groups of incoming freshman happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother’s side to tour the campus with other freshmen; I felt a little anxious. We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made causal introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this? After all, it had only been a few months since I left the hospital. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college...?

My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, “Hi, I’m Jennifer.” “I’m Lauren,” I replied. “Where do you prefer to live? At home or on campus?” she said. Before I could reply, the tour guide announced it was time to create our schedules and select the courses we wanted to take.

We crowded into the Student Activity Center. Three seniors handed out thick course bulletins (课程公告) and forms that needed to be filled out. All around me, the sounds of turning papers and writing sounded like those given by an alarm clock. Others seemed to be moving through the process quickly but I hadn’t even opened my course catalog (目录).

“Focus,” I told myself. “just read through the catalog and find the course you like and a schedule that works” psychology A or B, Geology 101, English, history, sections 1, 2, 3…The list went on and on.

I panicked and almost started to cry. How was I supposed to know how to complete it? I was just relearning how to live in the real world, and they wanted me to make a schedule. How I wished someone could help me.

Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms.
