It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn’t going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick or treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson’s house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us a surprise.

But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy’s neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated (咩咩叫) very sadly. The cry of grief which fell upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.
“Please tell your boy to stop a moment, ” she said in husky tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.

Grandma was amused. But she insisted that she should stay at home and rest up. She wished us a pleasant visit and reminded us to send her regards to the monkeys in the zoo.
Well, we did go and we did have a great time but I kept wishing Grandma could have been there with us. When we reached the monkey mountain, Grandpa told us to hold still and say “cheese" and snapped a good picture of the monkeys and us.
“Cheese!” I said. But Indi said, “Happy Valentine's Day, Grandma!”
"You were supposed to say cheese." said Grandpa.
Indi shrugged, “It just came out.”
"I'm glad it did" I said, because your words just gave me a fantastic idea! What if we take pictures of different animals, and then turn them into a special Valentine gift for Grandma?" Indi and Grandpa agreed and we kept taking pictures with delight for Grandma's surprise.

But James was very frightened when the man was struck on the head by a brick and badly hurt. All the boys ran away, and James slipped across the fields to his home.
As he drew near the house, his sister Caroline came out to meet him, holding up a beautiful gold chain and some new books for him to see. She told James that their uncle, who had been away several years, had come home, and was now in the house; that he had bought beautiful presents for the whole family; that he had left his carriage at the inn, a mile or two off and walked on foot so as to surprise his brother, their father.

All it began with a perfect gift. A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy could ask for: a cell phone. I ignored my family, my surroundings and on one unfortunate afternoon, a closed door that seemed to appear out of nowhere. What I was doing was secondary to what everyone else was doing. So, I felt extremely displeased when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. “This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special. We’re going camping.”
His excitement was met with disappointed sigh. But I wasn’t too annoyed. It wasn’t my dream vacation, but it was still a vacation. I remained unbothered throughout the packing, planning and, of course, the instructions that went in one ear and out the other. My mind was on my phone, and the texts were flying back and forth. I was so absorbed in the screen in my hand, in fact, that the first time I can remember truly looking up was when we drove across a bridge to our campsite.
I stared out the window in a daze and saw redwoods towering above us, and a roaring river rushing by. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelled of pine. But none of that mattered to me. The reason I had looked up was for something far more serious. More shocking, my phone no longer had service.
Then my dad disclosed that he had chosen a campsite that had no cell service, and my phone — my lifeline —would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world. On the first day, I shouted, I bargained, I begged. However, none of it would add bars to my cell service. I went to bed angry that night, thinking I would be bored to death the next day.
