Public image doesn't make money directly. nor is it anything visible. However, excellent public image is such an important thing that it is     1     desired by every company, enterprise, institution, etc. Public image refers to how a company is     2     by its customers, suppliers, and stockholders, by the financial community, by the communities where it operates, and by federal and local governments. Public image is controllable to     3     extent. just as the product, price, place, and promotional efforts are.

A firm's public image plays a vital role in the attraction of the firm and its products to employees, customers, and to such outsiders as stockholders, supplies, creditors (贷款方), government officials, as well as different special groups. With some things it is impossible to     4     all the different publics: for example, a new highly automated plant may meet the     5     of creditors and stockholders. However, it will     6     find resistance from employees who see their jobs     7    . On the other hand, high quality products and service standards should bring almost complete approval, while low quality products and false claims would be widely looked down upon.

A firm's public image, if it is good, should be     8    . It is a valuable strength that usually is built up over a long and satisfying relationship of a firm with publics. If a firm has developed a quality image, this is not easily imitated by competitors. Such as image may enable a firm to     9     higher prices, to win the best distributors and dealers, to attract the best employees, to expect the most favorable creditor relationships and lowest borrowing costs. It should also allow the firm's stock to     10     higher price-earnings ratio (比例) than other firms in the same industry with such a good reputation and public image.

Locally Extinct Rhino Is Back in Chad

Pigs don’t fly yet, but rhinos do.

Six black rhinoceroses were flown from South Africa to Zakouma National Park in Chad last week,     1     the threatened animal with a land it has not walked on in nearly five decades.

Chad is one of several African countries that have recently     2     to start their own small black rhino populations in an attempt to protect the species from extinction. It is a participant in the African Rhino Conservation Plan, which hopes to significantly grow the number of rhinos in Africa over the next five years.

Up until the mid-20th century, black rhinos     3     the landscape of Chad, grazing (吃草) and attracting tourists. But they also attracted poachers, who hunted them for their horns, which are displayed as     4     symbols. The population of black rhinos is down 97.6 percent since I960. Some estimate that as few as 5,500 are left on the continent according to the African Wildlife Foundation.

Cathy Dean, chief executive officer of Save the Rhino, an advocacy group, said six black rhinos were not significant in the context of the 5,000 or so that exist     5    . But it’s a good sign that Chad has a safe place to house rhinos now.

According to the African Wildlife Foundation, 98 percent of the current black rhino population exists in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Namibia. South Africa, which is     6     to 40 percent of the rhinos, has already moved some of them to other countries, like Botswana.

Zakouma National Park will be responsible for protecting the rhinos from poachers and providing them with a(n)     7     environment to live in.

Transporting the animals to create a new population is a plan that can prove effective, Ms. Dean said “Some subspecies are     8     really well, with an annual growth rate at 9 percent or even higher,” she said in an email.

But moving the rhinos to a place where they once were and no longer are isn’t enough. The population must be managed and protected, and law     9     must play a role, Ms. Dean said. There should also be biological management, guided by effective monitoring. The rhinos cannot be dropped into a(n)     10     and expected to mate.

Digital technology — email and smart phones especially — have vastly improved workers' ability to be productive outside of a traditional office. Even so, most white-collar work still happens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey of office workers     1     by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix, most bosses are     2     about remote working. Half of the workers say their boss doesn't accept it and only 35 percent say it's     3    .

Suspicious bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced (加深) by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they've watched TV or a movie while “working” remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner. If people find no one     4     him, he will become lazy and no pressure particularly in their own house where it is very comfortable place.

It is true, however, that working at home makes people much more     5    , because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done. It's much faster, for example, to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work    6    .

The fact that such practices remain officially unaccepted     7     how far we haven't come as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported by a full-time homemaker.

More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be     8     a low-cost way to give workers something of value. Sixty-four percent of those survey     9     who haven't worked     10     would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home. Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to let their employees have enough flexibility to manage their time efficiently..

It was very hot outside. The Chengdu Little Warriors were facing off against the Legendary Mighty Dragons of Beijing at a local indoor skating-rink (溜冰场). When I arrived, the Little Warriors, whose oldest player was eight years old, had just     1     their northern competitors. Near the lockers, a poster advertised hockey classes. Olympic     2     has begun to spread so far south that Chengdu now has nine skating-rinks and local hockey leagues for both kids and adults. It clearly shows China’s     3     to take the opportunity of holding the Olympics to promote winter sports across the country.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games were praised as a success by almost every     4    : the wonderful opening ceremony, the tight security, the large crowds of     5     volunteers, and Team China’s place atop the gold-medal rankings. Each aspect of the event signaled the country’s arrival as a world power, capable of competing with the best and winning.

If 2008 was about China getting a seat at the table, the 2022 Winter Olympic Games     6     a different purpose. China's status as a global power is no longer in question. Beijing 2022 will not be just a two-week sporting event but the     7     of a multi-year campaign to promote winter sports. “ We no longer need to put on shows of ten thousand people performing Tai Chi,” said Zheng Kan. “ Now we just want to show that we are relatable.”

While the audience for winter sports may still be a small, relatively rich group, it is growing. To prove his commitments (承诺) to winter sports, President Xi Jinping     8     a “ three hundred-million-person winter-sports plan.” The plan is aimed at raising China’s participation rate in winter sports from less than two percent to twenty-two percent. Some schools in Beijing have already introduced courses     9     to winter sports. A high-speed rail line that was opened at the end of 2019 cuts travel time between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, where many of the events will be held in 2022, to under an hour.

With all these efforts, the 2022 Winter Olympic Games are     10     to be wonderful and unforgettable.

Newton’s Notes on Egypt’s Pyramids Sell for €378, 000

Handwritten notes by the English scientist Sir lsaac Newton were sold at a Sotheby’s London auction on 7 December, fetching €378,000. The three pages of notes, which date from the 1680s, show Newton     1     to work out the structure and exact measurements of ancient Egyptian pyramids.   The notes are burnt around the     2    , which is thought to be the result of Newton’s dog jumping up on the table and knocking over a candle.

Newton, who lived from 1642 to 1727, is most famous for discovering the laws of gravity. However, among his many other     3    , he wanted to work out the date and timings of the Apocalypse (末世). He thought that the key to this knowledge might be in the ancient pyramids at Giza, Egypt.

By studying the     4     of individual bricks, the length of tunnels and the height of chambers, Newton thought he would be able to work out the secrets of the pyramids and therefore unpick mysteries of Apocalypse, too. Newton also thought studying the pyramids could help him to work out the circumference (周长) of the Earth — a     5     piece in his work on gravity.

At the time, several people believed that the ancient Egyptians had access to important knowledge and secrets that were     6     when their civilisation ended. This belief was central to the study of alchemy (炼金术). Although Newton was very interested in alchemy, he kept this hidden because he thought it would     7     his career. He was known as an Enlightenment scientist.

However, Newton       8     showed more interest in alchemy than in science and maths. In 1936, a sale of Newton’s paperwork at Sotheby’s auction house revealed how far his research and interest in alchemy     9    . John Maynard Keynes, an economist, bought some of those papers. He said that Newton was “not the first of the age of     10    , he was the last of the magicians”. The notes that sold on 7 December are thought to be part of the same body of work.

The limitations of Digital Technology in the Fight against the Virus

Digital technology can help and has helped us in the fight against the novel coronavirus. But as coverage and understandable public interest - and concern - about the outbreak has intensified, it seems wise first to look at how the event is     1     some of technology's limitations both in and of itself and how we interpret what it can do for us.

Three themes emerge.

Technology is not immediate. There is a(n)     2     to believe that the recent rapid advances in processing power, algorithmic (运算法则的)development, machine learning and artificial intelligence can now     3     almost instant answers to everything. The digital landscape has changed massively since the SARS outbreak in 2003. But while we may be able to do things more    4    , some things still take time and that is particularly true of a virus. There is no one size fits all here and, indeed, there are real dangers in believing that one analytical strategy and its particular use can be applied universally.

Second, as viruses spread and     5    , so do the data sets around them. We are not dealing with a situation of simple 'garbage in, garbage out' but rather one where new information is emerging daily and there is the further    6    that there were delays in early reporting of the outbreak. That means the results even the wisest medical experts can produce are also going to change. Also, as you might     7     , their methodologies (方法论)vary.

Third, a lot of data is being placed into the digital area, across social media, specialist sites and elsewhere. Here, the    8     with 17 years ago is especially great. But the     9     behind various postings are many. Anyone might be able to access the data via a web browser - and its free availability is laudable (值得称赞的)-but its intended audiences can be very different. In some cases, experts are looking to inform the public but in seems to others they are looking to contribute to and    10    the debate taking place among themselves. These goals are laudable and necessary, but they do not always coexist harmoniously.

Museums Rethink What to Do with Their African Art Collections

Recently, a discussion is happening in museums around the world over the volume of African art in their collections. Officials in Germany and the Netherlands have announced plans to return art and artifacts(文物)taken from Africa during the    1    period. And more museum staff are meeting on the topic across Europe.

According to the most commonly    2    figures from UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientifie and Cultural Organization), 90% to 95%of sub-Saharan cultural artifacts are    3    outside Africa. Many were taken by force long ago and ended up in museums across Europe and North America.

At the Africa Museum in Belgium, director Guido Gryseels says 85 percent of the-museum’s collection comes from the Congo-the site of Belgium’s    4    colony in Central Africa. For decades, Congolese leaders have asked for these objects to be returned. Most of their    5    , and those by African countries to other museums, have been refused.

But recent events in Europe have    6    the possibility of returns at a much larger scale. In addition to the plans announced in Germany, last year France conducted a study of how much African art French museums are holding and made    7    about what to do with it.

The study recommended the return of a wide range of objects taken by force. The suggestion got mixed    8    in France, where there are at least 90000 African items in museums.

In France, some people have suggested returns could leave shelves    9    in French museums. Cecile Fromont, a French historian of Central African art, says that’s not going to happen. One way of thinking about it, she says, is that more African art can go on display.

However, Guido Gryseels of the Africa Museum in Belgium    10    that attitudes are changing. He says he’s in discussion with the Congo to return works.

Can a precise word total ever be known? No, says Professor David Crystal, known chiefly for his research in English language studies and author of around 100 books on the     1    . “It’s like asking how many stars there are in the sky. It’s impossible to answer,” he said.

An easier question to answer, he     2    , is the size of the average person’s vocabulary. He suggests taking a sample of about 20 or 30 pages from a medium-sized dictionary, which     3     about 100,000 entries or 1,000 or 1,500 pages.

Tick off the ones you know and count them. Then     4     that by the number of pages and you will discover how many words you know. Most people vastly underestimate their     5    .

“Most people know half the words-about 50,000-easily. A reasonably educated person about 75,000 and a really cool, smart person well, maybe all of them but that is rather     6    . An ordinary person, one who has not been to university say, would know about 35,000 quite easily.”

The formula can be used to calculate the number of words a person uses, but a person’s active language will always be less than their     7    , the difference being about a third.

Prof Crystal says exposure to reading will obviously expand a person’s vocabulary but the level of a person’s education does not     8     decide things. “A person with a poor education perhaps may not be able to read or read much, but they will know words and may have a very     9     vocabulary about pop songs or motorbikes. I’ve met children that you could     10     as having a poor education and they knew hundreds of words about skateboards that you won’t find in a dictionary.”

Letters Brought Back to Life

Letters as a way of communication have long given way to phone calls and WeChat messages. But a TV show, Letters Alive, is helping bring this old way to keep in touch back into the     1    .

Letters Alive took its idea from a UK program with a similar name, Letters Live. Both shows     2     famous actors and actresses, but there is no gossip, no eye-catching visual eects. Instead, it’s just one person walking up to a microphone and reading a letter.

But these are not just any letters. They vary greatly in time and subjects. There is, for example, a passionate letter that famous painter Huang Yongyu wrote to playwright Cao Yu 30 years ago to     3     his lack of creativity. There is also a(n)     4     note from Spring and Autumn Period written by two ordinary young soldiers to their elder brother to report their lives in the war zone.

Compared to published texts, letters also come with a personal     5    .

One example from Letters Live was a note of     6     from the mother of a dying child to JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books. It read: “Mrs Rowling, cancer threatened to take everything from my daughter, and your books turned out to be the castle we so     7     needed to hide in.”

According to Guan Zhengwen, the director of Letters Alive, it is this kind of     8     behind every letter that strikes a harmony with the audience. “It’s a thing of the past that entertainment shows     9     themselves only with pretty faces,” Guan told Sohu News. “Entertainment industry is starting to switch to a(n)     10     on wisdom and intelligence.”
