2 . Some colors that people see late at night could cause signs of the condition mental health experts call clinical depression. That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression.

Doctors use the words “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide.

In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters to different colors. The animals were separated into 4 groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their nighttime period. Another group was placed in blue light, a third group slept in white light. While a fourth was put in red light. After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the more depressed animals drank the less amount of water.

Randy Nelson, who heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University, says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is these animals didn’t show any sleep disruptions at all but they did have messed up circadian clock genes (生物钟基因)and they did show sign of depression whereas if they were in the pale red light, they did not.” He says there’s a lot of blue in white light, which explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters that see red light or darkness.

Mr Nelson has suggestions for people who work late at night, or those who like to stay up late.

“My recommendation is if you are just living a typical mostly active life during the day, mostly inactive at night, you need to limit exposure to TVs which are quite bluish in the light they give off and computer screens and things like that. You can get filtered glass, you can get filters (过滤器) on your computer screen and filters on your eReaders to put it more in the reddish light.”

1. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A.By examples.B.By comparison.
C.By reasoning.D.By explanation.
2. What can we conclude from the findings of the study?
A.Hamsters appear to be more upset.
B.The animals had messed up circadian clock genes.
C.These animals showed some sleep disruptions.
D.Animals in blue and white light appeared the most depressed.
3. Which one will Mr. Nelson recommend?
A.Stay up late.B.Be in bluish light.
C.Limit exposure to TVs.D.Get filters on your electronic equipment.
4. Where can you probably find the above text?
A.In a science magazine.B.In a fashion brochure.
C.In a research report.D.In a book review.

3 . Experts using a high-tech laser scanner (激光扫描仪) have discovered thousands of ancient Maya buildings hidden under the thick forests of northern Guatemala, officials said Thursday. Some 60, 000 buildings were found over the past two years in a scan of an area in the northern department of El Peten between Mexico and Belize, said Marcello Canuto, one of the projects’ lead researchers.

These findings are a “breakthrough in Maya archeology(考古),” Canuto said.

The new discoveries in this Central American country include city centers with sidewalks, homes, wide steps, farming facilities and so on, said Canuto, an archaeologist at Tulane University in the United States.

Among the finds was a 30-meter high pyramid (金字塔) that had been earlier recognized as a natural hill in Tikal. Also discovered in Tikal: a series of holes and a 14 kilometer-long wall.

The Maya development reached its height in what is present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, and parts of Belize, El Salvador and Honduras between 250 and 950 CE. Researchers now believe that the Maya had a population of 10 million, which is “much higher” than previous judgment, Canuto said.

The project depended on a remote (远程的) sensing method known as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). Aircraft with a LiDAR scanner produced 3D maps of the surface by using light in the form of laser linked to a GPS system.

The technology helped researchers discover sites much faster than using traditional archeological methods. “Now it is no longer necessary to cut through the jungle to see what’s under it,” said Canuto.

Details of the research will appear in a documentary to air on February 11 on the National Geographic TV channel, said Minister of Culture and Sports Jose Luis Chea.

1. What did Canuto think of the new discoveries in the past two years?
A.Leading.B.Frightening.C.Annoying.D.Puzzling.
2. Which one is NOT LiDAR’s advantage?
A.It saves time in discovering site.
B.It is more convenient for researchers to work in forest.
C.Explorers have to go deep into the jungle to research.
D.Research can be done at a distance.
3. According to the new discoveries, Maya might have been a nation________.
A.that lay in AfricaB.that was less developed
C.whose pyramid was made of a hillD.with a surprisingly large population
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To inform readers of the new discoveries about Maya.
B.To introduce a new method used to discover Maya buildings.
C.To show Maya development was of great influence.
D.To tell us a new documentary will be launched on TV in Feb.

5 . Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881—1973 ) was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. It was said that everything his brush touched turned to gold. But in truth, his works could be worth more than any precious metal. Picasso created more than 20,000 works in his life, including two of the world's 10 most expensive paintings.

Between 1907 and 1913, Picasso and his colleague Georges Braque started a revolution(革命) in painting. Before that, paintings were like windows—they were painted to look as if they had depth. You could tell which objects were "close" to you and which objects were "far away". But Picasso and Braque didn't want to paint like that any more. To them, a painting wasn't a window to the world; it was marks and lines on a flat surface. Why, they thought, should an object like a guitar be shown only from one angle (角度)? A guitar can look very different depending on which angle one looks at it from. Their answer was to show all the angles. They broke the guitar up into pieces. Their style of painting is called cubism (立体主义).

But why did they feel such a need to change things? Well, the world around them was changing, too. Science was turning people's ideas upside down. Albert Einstein's theory proved that what we knew about time and space was wrong. The world was becoming different; artists needed to start seeing and painting it differently.

The famous and terrifying painting Guernica (1937) shows a terrible scene during the Spanish Civil War. In the painting, you can actually see the sky falling. Picasso couldn't have painted it without the skills he learned during his cubist period. Breaking a guitar up into pieces was his preparation for showing the world being blown to pieces.

1. What is mainly discussed about Picasso in this article?
A.The high price of his paintings.
B.His difficulties in career.
C.The popularity of his paintings.
D.His achievements in art.
2. In what way did Picasso and Braque paint?

3. What caused Picasso and Braque to start cubism?
A.Einstein's theory.
B.The changing world.
C.A broken guitar.
D.Spanish Civil War.

A.To show the theme of Picasso's paintings.
B.To express Picasso's anger at the war.
C.To describe the preparations Picasso made before.
D.To present the artistic effect of cubism.

8 . Food waste is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and fruits and vegetables are particularly problematic, as an estimated 52% of harvests go bad before reaching consumers. But one Malaysian company claims to have come up with a simple and effective solution to this problem—a tiny sticker (粘贴标签) that stops fruits spoiling for two weeks.

You’ve probably seen stickers on fruits before, but not like the ones created by Stixfresh. Those common stickers are used only to provide consumers with information about the grower and how the fruit was grown, but Stixfresh has a different purpose. It contains a special, all- natural way that slows down the ripening process, keeping the fruit fresh and juicy for much longer.

Stixfresh are made with 100% organic materials and contain a mixture of ionized (电离) Sodium Chloride and beeswax, which helps slow down the bacterial activity in the fruit, thus delaying the ripening process. The company insists that the stickers are so safe that you can actually eat them.

Stixfresh founder Zhafri Zainudin says that he came up with the idea for the stickers four years ago, after visiting a friend who sold fruit. The man complained about losing money every day due to spoiled fruits, but seemed resigned (顺从的), as he knew there was no way to stop nature taking its course. However, the Malaysian entrepreneur had another idea.

“It got me to thinking. Maybe I couldn’t stop nature, but could I slow it down?” Zainudin writes on his company’s website.

The Malaysian businessman partnered with Selangor University to develop and test his stickers. It took him three years to perfect the manufacturing process and effect of his innovative product.

Originally, Stixfresh stickers were only used to prolong the shelf-life of mangos, but the company later realized that they also worked on other fruits of the same size and with similar texture, like dragon fruit and pears.

9 . For many of us, being alone is a negative state of being, implying isolation, being on the outside. Even further, it may imply that there is something actually wrong with a person who remains alone.     1     However, once mastered, it serves as the cornerstone for your development and growth as a human being.

Aloneness enhances your creativity.     2     When you are alone, you are more likely to stay true to yourself and try new things that you don't have the courage to do around others. Picasso or Van Gogh wouldn't have created the masterpieces if they hadn't taken enough solitary(独处的)time to experiment regardless of others' thoughts.

Being alone also prevents you from burning out. Sometimes you may wonder why you easily feel tired. One reason could be not giving yourself enough solitary time. Especially for people who go to work every day, it is unavoidable to feel exhausted when you have to deal with work, family, and your own passions at the same time.     3     It doesn't matter how you choose to spend those moments alone. As long as they relieve your stress, they're worthwhile.

4     When you take time to understand yourself, pursue your personal growth, and follow your dreams, you'll definitely discover the truth about yourself. Regardless of how well you may think you know yourself, learning how to be alone will allow you to deepen your self-awareness.

Being alone makes you a more creative person and helps with personal growth.     5

A.But it's necessary to learn how to be alone.
B.Learning to be alone therefore sounds scary.
C.Aloneness is often associated with mad artists.
D.How about giving yourself a few solitary moments?
E.It frees us from the limits of the world's opinions.
F.Self-exploration is perhaps the biggest benefit of aloneness.
G.So spend some time alone today to become a brighter and better person.
