2 . Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei officially launched the 2.0 version of its self-developed operating system (OS) on Wednesday night, the HarmonyOS. The move paved the way for the Chinese firm to challenge Google’s and Apple’s role in current and future OS ecosystems.

Among the major strong points, the HarmonyOS, with a highly scalable (可扩展的) platform, can be applied to various devices, including smart phones, computers, and other electronic devices, the company said.

Analysts said the OS will do a lot to promote Huawei’s change into being a software service provider. Huawei’s founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said that the company was focusing on software because future development in the field was basically “out of US control and we will have greater independence and autonomy (自主权)”. Ren called on the company’s staff to “dare to lead the world” in software.

“The success of a software system will always have to rely on hardware (硬件), but nowadays, Huawei doesn’t have enough hardware to support its software ambitions   — that’s the most difficult part,” said Jiang Junmu, chief writer at a news website. Once as the world’s largest smart phone maker, Huawei’s national smart phone market share (份额) has continued to drop in recent months. Liang Zhenpeng, an industry analyst, said that as an OS designed for the Internet of Things(IoT) era, the HarmonyOS may need more time and equipment to test than the OS for smart phones, and that will take at least two to three years.

Moreover, Liang noted that an ecosystem will always be the decisive factor for the success of an operating system. “Does the HarmonyOS have enough applications that can attract consumers to update to the OS? That’s a question,” Liang said. So far, more than 300 application and service partners, 1000 hardware partners, and 500,000 developers have joined in the set-up of the Harmony ecosystem.

1. What advantage does the HarmonyOS have over other operating systems?
A.It provides users with a secure experience.
B.It operates faster than Google system.
C.It works on a wide range of equipment.
D.It has different versions in different countries.
2. What can you infer from Ren Zhengfei’s words?
A.Huawei’s change is challenging.
B.Huawei is seeking a new software service provider.
C.The company’s staff need to improve their skills.
D.Huawei will break its dependence on the US.
3. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The difficulties in promoting the HarmonyOS.
B.The success of developing the HarmonyOS.
C.Smartphone sales in the national market.
D.The future software ambition of Huawei.
4. What does Liang expect partners and developers to do?
A.Create enough applications.
B.Update the original devices.
C.Cooperate with experts in various fields.
D.Build the HarmonyOS ecosystem.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One summer vacation, I learned some kids volunteered as guide dog raisers for a guide dog training center. Then I also wanted to take part in it. My parents supported it.

After I filled out the application form to be a guide dog raiser, two of the training center's workers came to my house to meet me and my family. They said, “After the volunteer helps raise a guide dog puppy for a year, the dog needs to be returned to the training center. There the dog will receive a five-month professional guide-dog training. Then the dog will stay with a blind person and help with his or her life.” The workers told us what a big responsibility it was to raise a guide dog puppy. And I promised I would do a great job.

We later got a call that our puppy was coming soon—a female yellow puppy. When Dad and I picked her up, I was glad. She was the prettiest dog I’d ever seen. Her name was Nisha. When I started working with Nisha, I learned right away how intelligent dogs are. Guide dog puppies seem to know they're special and were born to do special work. My main job was to help her grow, teach her basic house rules and how to get along with people, and let her learn about public places.

Nisha loved to ride in the car. I was allowed to take her anywhere a trained guide dog could go, including stores and buses. Nisha was a good listener. Whenever I felt I needed to talk to someone, Nisha was always there. She was a lovely puppy.

During the year, Nisha and my whole family developed a very close relationship. And we knew the day was coming when she would have to go back to the training center for the five-month professional guide-dog training. After that she would go to live with John, a blind man.

6 . The idea of billions of people going through a few masks a week during this pandemic (疫情) rings alarm bells, but a team of researchers in Melbourne, Australia, may have the solution.

To recycle the abandoned masks, Jie Li and his team added millions of face masks to road-paving (铺路) materials. They found the polypropylene plastic used to make single-use face masks could really increase the flexibility of the road.

The new composite material is a mixture of about 2% masks, with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA)—a material produced from waste concrete and other minerals from buildings pulled down. This recycled material found in the study is ideal for two of the four layers generally required to create roadways. And the final product is more resistant to wear than normal asphalt (沥青), as well as being cheaper too, if there was a method for collecting masks.

Li and his team did a cost-analysis and found that, at $26 per ton, the RCA was about half the cost of mining materials, and as much as a third of the cost of shipping the used masks to a landfill (垃圾填埋场). If the percentage of damaged roads in Washington state were repaired with Li’s mixture, it would reuse nearly 10 billion masks, sparing American landfills hundreds of millions of tons of trash.

The team is going to look for industry partners or governments willing to give their plastic mask road an opportunity for a large-scale test.

1. What’s the purpose of the research?
A.To ring the alarm bells.
B.To find a substitute for asphalt.
C.To reduce burden on the environment.
D.To invent a method for colleting masks.
2. Which of the following best explains “composite” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A.Combined.B.Popular.
C.Powerful.D.Primitive.
3. What do we know about the new material?
A.It is money-saving.B.It has four layers.
C.It is mainly made of masks.D.It is expensive to ship.
4. What will Li’s team probably do next?
A.Do a cost-analysis.B.Repair the damaged roads.
C.Look for support.D.Increase the flexibility of roads.

I grew up in a large family of twelve siblings (兄弟姐妹). We weren’t poor by most standards, but things were difficult for us. My parents never shared their financial worries, choosing instead to let us have a carefree childhood. But I knew that there were times they went without and that certain things my friends had wouldn’t be easy for me to get.

Back in those days, hot lunch was a luxury (奢侈) for the wealthier kids, and hot-lunch buyers sat separately from the students who brought cold lunch. My siblings and I brought lunch from home every day: homemade bread, three cookies, and a small apple. We would look on longingly as the rich kids proudly sat down with their steaming plates of fried chicken or fish sticks and cold milk, sweet peaches and delicious cake.

I never said anything, but my first grade teacher, Mrs. Caruso, must have seen the eagerness in my eyes. One day she quietly pressed a note into my hand and whispered, “Give this to your mother.”

I arrived home and gave my mom the note. She read it and smiled. “Well, Mrs. Caruso said because of all your hard work, she wants to buy your lunch tomorrow.” The next day, I proudly carried my tray of chicken across the cafeteria and took my seat at the hot-lunch table. Honestly, the food wasn’t as great as I had imagined, but I was pleased to be there and felt honored to be a part of the group.

One rainy day, Mrs. Caruso asked me to stay after school. My heart instantly sank. Surely, I must be in trouble! Did she know I hadn’t finished my math homework? Did she see me making fun of Billy on the playground?

10 . It might sound unbelievable, but mind control television could soon become a reality. This technology could one day replace the remote control.

When testing the prototype, the users were able to operate a headset that allowed them to operate it and choose what they wanted to watch by concentrating. The device can know what you want to watch by reading the changes in brain activity. Cyrus Saihan, head of Business Development at BBC Digital, said the technology was still at an experimental stage.

Writing in a BBC blog, he said an experiment with ten members found they could all use the headset to start watching a program. He continued, “You can imagine a world where instead of having to get up from your sofa or reach for your remote control, you just think ‘put BBC 1 on’ when you want to watch TV. Imagine sitting in your car and thinking ‘I want to listen to Radio 4’ and hearing the radio station come on. Perhaps you would be able to just think ‘give me the latest news’, and then get served with a set of news.”

But Mr. Saihan added, “It’s important to know that it’s very early days, and while the devices are still improving, what they can do is still quite basic. Hopefully, it gives an idea of how audiences of the future might be able to control devices such as TVs just using their brain.” It is hoped that the system could be used to help those with disabilities in the future.

1. What do we know about mind control television from the text?
A.It is still at the test stage.B.It is just in people’s mind.
C.It has become a reality already.D.It has been well received by customers.
2. What was a headset intended to do in the test?
A.To read the users’ minds.B.To change the channels by itself.
C.To cause changes in people’s brains.D.To remind the users of the programs.
3. What does Cyrus Saihan mainly talk about in Paragraph 3?
A.The users of the new technology.B.The market for the new technology.
C.The new technology used in the cars.D.The convenience of the new technology.
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Mr. Saihan shows less interest in the technology.
B.The technology can only be applied in TVs.
C.The disabled may benefit from the technology in the future.
D.The technology will improve the development of brains.
