1 . Dwayne Johnson was born Dwayne Douglas Johnson on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California, United States. His father, Rocky Johnson, was a professional wrestler while his mother, Ata Maivia, was the daughter of a wrestler. His father is of Black Nova Scotian origin, while his mother is of Samoan heritage, which explains his exotic (异国的) looks. Dwayne Johnson, previously employed as a professional wrestler, is an actor known for his appearance in the fantasy adventure film, ‘The Mummy Returns’. A highly successful professional wrestler before making his first attempt into films, Johnson is also famous for his ring name, ‘The Rock’.
Born into a family of wrestlers, it comes as no surprise that he too made a name for himself in the sport. Athletic and fond of sports from a young age, he used to join in many sporting activities as a school student. He played football for his high school and was also a member of the school’s track and field and wrestling teams. He was a promising footballer and received a full scholarship from the University of Miami to play defensive tackle (后卫). He was hopeful of making it big as a professional footballer when an injury put a full-stop to his football ambitions. Though disappointed, he did not let this incident demotivate him and instead decided to become a wrestler. His father, a professional wrestler himself, began training the young man. Eventually Johnson made his WWF debut (首秀) and established himself as a successful wrestler.
Due to his popularity coupled with his attractively strong looks he started receiving offers from Hollywood studios and he began his acting career with the movie, ‘The Mummy Returns’.

3 . Looking at his pile of unpaid bills always makes Giuseppe Del Giudice feel uneasy. More often than not, Del Giudice leaves almost everything until the last moment. He is not alone. “It’s part of the human condition,” said procrastination (拖延症) researcher Tim Pychyl, a psychology professor at Carleton University. “We want to feel good now. The way to do that is to avoid the task.”
One big factor for avoidance is fear of failure, of not living up to expectations. Kelli Saginak, a 57-year-old functional health coach from Wisconsin, procrastinated about looking for a new job for years. “If I don’t take the risk, decide, or commit, I don’t have to face the judgment.” said Saginak. That inability to take action only confirmed her that she would never do any better. Procrastinators believe that they are more effective under pressure. But researchers have different opinions. “I once did an experiment, putting procrastinators under restrictions of time,” said Tim Pychyl. “They made more errors. They took longer than nonprocrastinators, but they thought they did better.”
Whatever the motivation, procrastination is usually not going to be good for you. Delaying a diet or exercise program may increase your risk of heart disease. Procrastinators experience higher levels of stress, both from leaving things to the last minute and from their own regrets about their procrastination. There’s one bit of good news: People tend to procrastinate less as they age. “As you grow older, the idea of living forever does fade away,” Tim Pychyl said. “It becomes clearer: How many summers do we have left? Ten? Fifteen? They’re really limited. What are you going to do with each of those summers?”

4 . “I’m going to tell you a heartbreaking story.” I told my class of high school seniors. All eyes looked up. Nothing quiets a chatty group of teenagers faster than the promise of a story.
“In sixth grade,” I began, “I fell in love. His name was David.” The girls were laughing. “So it was Valentine’s Day. I saw one enormous envelope on my desk. My mind raced: ‘Who could it be from?’ With trembling hands, I tore it open and there was a card. At the bottom I saw the signature and almost fainted: David. Then my eyes traveled up to the writing above his signature. It read, ‘To the Ugliest Girl in Our Class’”.
Mouths dropped open. Some looked down at their desks, seemingly embarrassed for me. “What did you do?” asked a brave soul. I said. “My eyes filled with tears. It ruined Valentine’s Day for me. It shook what little faith I had in myself for a long time after. But I survived, and it gave me the motivation to undo the cruelty of David.” I smiled. “And that’s why we’re going to have a card exchange.” Their eyes lighted up. “Write something positive and sincere to someone in the class. Even if it’s someone you barely know, there’s always something nice to say. Admire their fashion sense or their basketball skills. Tell them you appreciate their friendly smile.” Looking on as they composed each message was always a treat. But the real fun came when they read what people wrote to them. From then on, I made it a Valentine tradition.
After 20 years of teaching, I harbor few hopes that students will remember all of the vocabulary. But if a student recalls of the lesson they received on Valentine’s Day, to me that makes it all worthwhile.

7 . Do you have imagination? Do you like to solve problems? Can you? If so, you could be the next great inventor. “But I’m just a kid”, you might be! Don’t worry about a little thing like age. For example, one famous inventor, Benjamin Franklin, got his start when he was only 12. At that young age, he created paddles for his hands to help him swim faster. Finally his creation led to what we know is called flippers!
So you don’t have to be adult to be an inventor. One thing you do need, though, is something that kids have plenty of: curiosity and imagination. Kids are known for looking at things in new and unique ways.
So what should you do if you have what is a great idea for an invention? Talk to a friend or family member about it. Get input from others about your idea. Then ask them to help you create a working model — called a prototype (原型) of your idea.
Once you have a prototype, you can test it. Sometimes your idea turns out to be not as great as you thought. At other times, though, you realize it is a good idea and your prototype can help you figure out how to make it even better.
If your idea is really a good one, an adult can help you contact companies that might be interested in it. You will also want an adult’s help to get a patent for your idea, so that it is protected and can’t be stolen by someone else. If you need some inspiration, consider these kids and their inventions.
Jeanie Low invented the Kiddie Stool when she was just 11. It’s a folding stool that fits under the kitchen sink. Kids can unfold it and use it to reach the sink all by themselves.
At the age of 15, Louis Braille invented the system named after him that allows the blind to read.
Chelsea Lanmon received a patent when she was just 8 for the “pocket diaper (尿布)”, a new type of diaper that includes a pocket for holding baby wipes and powder.

10 . A 21-year-old female student has become the youngest woman ever to be elected as Mayor (市长) after first entering politics to campaign about food.
Labor Party (工党) member Rosie Corrigan was elected as Mayor of Selby, a market town in North Yorkshire, on Monday. The student’s election was unchallenged to the mayoralty, following a year serving as deputy mayor. Corrigan has just finished her second year studying politics at the University of Hull. A political activist since secondary school, lifelong Selby citizen Corrigan has always been ambitious. As a member of the UK Youth Parliament, she co-founded the Selby Youth council, and then went on to run for and win the local council election as a Labour candidate (候选人) aged just 18.
Corrigan plan to use her year in office to further encourage political awareness in the youth of Selby. By breaking a political record of being the youngest woman ever elected in UK history, Corrigan hopes this will break the misunderstanding of Selby being a sleepy town with old-fashioned views. “It’s an honor to be the Mayor of my lovely hometown,” Corrigan told a newspaper. “I plan on using the year to encourage children and young people to champion their communities.”
The politics student’s election has been supported whole heartedly by the politicians she has worked with throughout her early-developing career, including the backing of former deputy Prime Minister (副首相) John Prescott. Simon Darvill said in an interview, “I hope that the success of Rosie and others like her encourages more young people to get involved in politics and change where they live for the better.”
