1 . Artificial intelligence programs that can generate text at the click of a button are increasingly widely used. One of the most popular AI programs is ChatGPT, which has hundreds of millions of monthly users.

Despite the usefulness of these tools, many humans cannot tell the difference between something written by a person and something written by a machine. As a result, they can fuel disinformation or even facilitate cheating in academic field. To fight with this rise in AI-generated reading, some “GPT detectors” have been rolled out, which are said to spot the difference — but they may come with their own biases (偏见).

A recent opinion piece in the journal Patterns calls into question the accuracy of GPT detectors, finding that they’re biased against non-native English speakers. The authors also found that it’s easier to fool these detectors by using more detailed prompts (提示) in the first place. “This raises a critical question,” the authors write. “If AI-generated content can easily escape detection while human text is frequently misclassified (对……进行错误的分类), how effective are these detectors truly?”

“Ignoring the biases in GPT detectors may lead to unintended consequences, such as the marginalization (边缘化) of non-native speakers in evaluative or educational settings,” they conclude. As such, this is yet another obvious example of how technology can reflect prejudices in society that cannot be removed.

The authors warn against using GPT detectors in certain settings, especially educational environments with non-native English speakers, and recommend a thorough evaluation of this technology and its limitations as it becomes more widespread.

6 . To celebrate the Thanksgiving Day, there’re a lot of things to experience in the River City Richmond in the state of Virginia.

There’s a feast of LED-light displays at the Holiday Light Show, through New Year’s Eve at the Richmond Raceway Complex. It celebrates diverse holiday traditions. There’s about a mile of lights, and it takes just under a half hour to ride through. It opens at 5 pm each night, and admission in advance is $25 per carload, or $62.50 for unlimited admissions.

The 45th annual Model Railroad Show rolls back into the Science Museum of Virginia for the weekend. This year’s show features train displays, steam engine displays, a live train scene and rides on the Teddy Bear Express, tracking the technological footprint. A dog who is thought to have died in a snow slide is home safe after spending days in the     1    (freeze) cold mountains.

A skier and a snowboarder both survived a snow slide in Chaffee County, Colorado, last week. “The second skier down caused a snow slide,     2     then washed over the snowboarder,” said Brian Lazar, the second-in-command director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

The skier opened his airbag and     3    (injure) badly. The snowboarder who     4    (be) below was unable to open her airbag, and she was buried     5     (complete) without a possible airway. The skier was able to save her from the snow. “This could have gone     6    a much different direction very easily.” Lazar said.

The couple also had their dog with them. After searching everywhere for the dog following     7    snow slide, they left without being able to find it.

“We did have some search and rescue     8     (member) visit yesterday, but they didn’t see any signs of tracks,” Lazar said.

It was supposed that the dog died in the snow slide     9    the dog was found on a road late Saturday night.

“Extraordinarily, the dog managed     10    (survive) and made it back to Monarch Pass after spending many nights in cold weather,” Lazar said.
