1 . Artificial intelligence programs that can generate text at the click of a button are increasingly widely used. One of the most popular AI programs is ChatGPT, which has hundreds of millions of monthly users.
Despite the usefulness of these tools, many humans cannot tell the difference between something written by a person and something written by a machine. As a result, they can fuel disinformation or even facilitate cheating in academic field. To fight with this rise in AI-generated reading, some “GPT detectors” have been rolled out, which are said to spot the difference — but they may come with their own biases (偏见).
A recent opinion piece in the journal Patterns calls into question the accuracy of GPT detectors, finding that they’re biased against non-native English speakers. The authors also found that it’s easier to fool these detectors by using more detailed prompts (提示) in the first place. “This raises a critical question,” the authors write. “If AI-generated content can easily escape detection while human text is frequently misclassified (对……进行错误的分类), how effective are these detectors truly?”
“Ignoring the biases in GPT detectors may lead to unintended consequences, such as the marginalization (边缘化) of non-native speakers in evaluative or educational settings,” they conclude. As such, this is yet another obvious example of how technology can reflect prejudices in society that cannot be removed.
The authors warn against using GPT detectors in certain settings, especially educational environments with non-native English speakers, and recommend a thorough evaluation of this technology and its limitations as it becomes more widespread.

2 . Hugh Lyon and David Lawrence have been riding together for years. They have both lived in Falkirk, Scotland their whole lives, but didn’t meet until they got involved in Cycling Without Age. “Despite the fact that we’re 20 years apart in age, roughly, we both went to the same secondary school,” said Lyon, 74.
The 56-year-old Lawrence serves as a “pilot”, driving the trishaw — a bike with a passenger seat in the front that Cycling Without Age uses for their rides. They go for rides about once a week, often discussing the history of their town.
“It gives me a connection with people from an older generation,” said Lawrence. “Unfortunately, I’ve lost both my parents; they’re no longer with us. And for me, it gives that connection with older people and I enjoy spending time with them and hearing their stories.”
Ole Kassow, who founded Cycling Without Age, said that’s the power of the program. “The truly powerful thing about these bike rides is that they tie people and stories together to create new relationships,” Kassow said. “In my experience, friendships and the ability to form new relationships at any age are what define a good life, and often also a long and happy life.”
Kassow started Cycling Without Age in Copenhagen in 2012, but there are now 2, 700 chapters in 52 countries.
John Seigel Boettner started the Santa Barbara chapter. He has one rule for passengers. “They ask, ‘If I’m going to go for a ride, what’s it going to cost?’ I say, ‘Here’s what it costs: It costs, you have to wave. If you don’t wave, I’m going to kick you out,’” he joked.
Boettner said, “When you take a 101-year-old woman for a bike ride and she holds your hand tightly and says thank you and gives you a kiss on the cheek, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

7 . Go on the Safest Trip
While travelling, there are many safety measures that all travelers should take, even if they’re heading out a nearby mountain for a camping trip, renting a seaside Airbnb, or choosing any other destination.
Don’t take the unfamiliar road. While part of the joy of exploring nature is seeing new and beautiful views, if your road trip includes a hike, stay on the marked path. Never give in to your curiosity to hike off-trail and in unfamiliar or unmarked areas. “
Pack clothing. In the morning, when you set out on your adventure, your temperature will likely be comfortable. As the sun reaches its highest point, you’ll start to sweat inside your car.
Make sure you get enough sleep. While many people have difficulty sleeping, plenty rest is necessary before a long car ride. “Do not drive while you are feeling sleepy.
Protect your skin. You may not consider the sun while sitting in the car. The sunlight can go right through window glass and cause you to burn.
A.You could get lost, injured or both. |
B.It is a wise choice to wear strong shoes. |
C.You would never enjoy the views without the tips. |
D.If you feel like a rest, pull over and take a short break. |

It was a lovely spring morning. The sky was blue, the sun was out, and the air was warm. As I drove along the curvy roads, I saw thousands of wild flowers in bloom and some volunteers picking up trash along the side of the road. I smiled as I saw them doing some “Spring Cleaning” for our Mother Earth and my mind was cast back to the spring day long long ago.
When my children were younger, we used to walk a small trail around the lake near our home. One spring day, my daughter and I noticed much trash was lying along the trail. The next day we brought a big trash bag with us and started to pick up the trash along the way slowly. There were pop cans, plastic water bottles, wrappers for candy bars, empty chip bags, pieces of broken fishing line, and even an old deserted shoe. We picked up each one and even fished a few pieces of garbage out of the water. By the time we had circled the lake, the bag was nearly full.
Tired but happy, we finally put the bag in an empty trash can. Before we headed home, we took one last look at the lake. It looked more beautiful than ever and I felt like the angels were smiling at us at that moment.
I realized that though environmental pollution is still serious, the truth is that every time we stop to pick up a single piece of trash, it will make a difference. So from then on I planned to take further action to keep the environment clean.
